For me the year has been all about starting up our shiny new website, sunnydaleafterdark.com. Lots of work went into it from a dedicated team, and now it holds hundreds of fics, art and other cool things.

Many folks have reposted from elsewhere, but some of the material is exclusive to the site, so that's the only place you'll find it. Here are five stories worth the reading:

Not a Monster [NC-17] by Grief Counselling (formerly dampersandspoons) and Dusty - still a WIP but lots of chapters there already. Two outstanding writers at the peak of their form.

I Hear a Very Gentle Sound [R] by VioletMoon - a lovely, touching one-shot set in S6.

PS: Not A Date![R] by VeroNyxK84
S7 Spike gives Buffy care and support when she really needs it. Very sweet.

Aeternum in Anno [NC-17] by Chelle shortish but good as Buffy lives the year after Spike went up in flames.

Daisy in the Dark [PG-13] by Dusty. Spike can't stop visiting Buffy's grave. He meets someone else mourning a person they cared for.

This year's session of Top 5 closes in 25 hours! So if anyone's still got recs to make this year, post soon or save them for next year :)

With our sessions running late in a year, we don't catch everything still to come. But it's still new to Top 5, so here's a shiny new set of works!

1) Footprints by kerk_hiraeth. Being a librarian, Giles knows the value of ephemera. Read more... )

I don't usually read WIPs, but I am making an exception for these ones, because they're just so good or because I know they're going to be good. I may be cheating a bit here, as several of the WIPs in this list were not started in 2020, but since they all got updated this year I think it still counts. To compensate, two of them are REALLY recent.

Two well-researched products of international collaboration, two stories by people tapping into their own local lore, and a delightful joke oneshot.

(1) A taniwha from New Zealand, in Seek a Desolate Shade by wolf_shadoe a.k.a. Twinkles (Spuffy, NC-17, 23,737 words, complete)
The reason this list exists and the BEST THING EVER, because Twinkles is familiar not only with the folklore but also with its symbolic meanings in existing art and its presence in contemporary everyday life. And there's artwork. And this is thoughtful and magical and epic and fun. [ETA: I did want to mention that Angel is pretty evil in this story. Also, maybe there should be a sadness warning for parts of it... but still very worth reading, I thought.]

Five BtVS crossover fics

This is my first entry for Buffyverse Top 5! These are five BtVS Crossover fics I enjoyed. Hope you will too!

We had some excellent long fics in 2012, because our fandom is full of talented people. Many of those fics have been mentioned on other lists. Here are some for which I am (patiently) awaiting updates.

Safeverse by [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight (Spike/Giles with plot) NC17
A Season 7 Giles juggles a chipped/souled/triggered Spike, a secretive and hostile Council, and the Potential Slayers who depend on him. It’s even harder when The First keeps popping up wearing the face of his allies. 8 chapters posted.

Some gen, some AU, some Spuffy. It's all good... )

WIP, 31 chapters, PG so far, NC-17 later. Alternate season 4. Buffy wakes in a Sunnydale that went utterly wrong... Everybody's asleep; the phones are dead; and there is no way out of the town. Buffy's only hope is a certain vampire who managed to stay awake and who was persistent enough to wake her up. Intriguing premise, genre storytelling par excellence, witty dialogues, funny insights into Buffy's and Spike's minds, overall creepy atmosphere -- the story's vitality and finesse make "Dust" one of the most exciting and gripping stories of the year.

Yup, you read that right. I'm recommending unfinished fics *cue screams of horror*. I know! Craziness! Bear with me for a moment, and I'll tell you why you should try these stories.

All under the cut because I really adore these stories and I tend to babble about them. )

I couldn't find all the ones I wanted to find, even using the Wayback Machine. These links all appear to work, though.

Five golden oldies, no particular connection between them, except maybe get it while you can (except for the last one, which is probably safe at the moment).

Secrets and Lies by Lynn. NC17, Spike/Buffy, set during BtVS season 2.

This was the first long fanfic story I was so enthralled by I couldn't stop reading it. Until I read it, I'd never even conceived of Spike/Buffy as a 'ship. It's an uncompleted WIP and may seem very dated now, but back in the day I loved it. This is the only copy I could find out there, archived on Saber Shadowkitten's Buffyverse fanfiction site. Speaking of whom...

In general, I tend to be a fan of late season or post-series Buffy/Spike fanfiction, but sometimes there's nothing more fun than reading a story in which those two crazy kids get together a little sooner than in canon.

The Perfume of Kismet, by Gwyneth Rhys - After the events of "Becoming", Buffy runs into a familiar face in Los Angeles.

Three Spuffy, two not, all things that had new chapters this year and that I'll be really excited to see finished!

1. The Vampire in the Basement, by [livejournal.com profile] beneficia - (7/16? chapters)
post-BtVS, AU Sherlock
Dawn Summers, latest vampire with a soul, wants 221A Baker Street for her very own. Only there's this obnoxious guy from upstairs who will not quit snooping, and damn if Dawn's going to let that slide. I would never in a million years have thought that the world needed a Dawn/Sherlock crossover, but I am so glad there is. If anyone's going to put Sherlock in his place, it's Dawn.

Eternal WIPs are frustrating, but at the same time there's still a lot of pleasure to be found in all of these stories. None of these fics is ever likely to be completed, but all of them are still well worth reading.

1. Giving In, by ColdCoffeeEyes25 - Post-"Wrecked" with sweeter-than-canon Spuffy and a plot involving the Trio, Amy, and the spirit of Robespierre. As far as I can tell, this is the only Buffy fic the author ever wrote, which is a shame because it's witty, well-plotted, and sweetly romantic. While this is unfinished, it stops in a pretty satisfying place, tying up most of the plot threads.

When Spike grows tired of being beaten down in his relationship with Buffy, he finds solace in a D/s relationship with Willow that blossoms into something that changes both their lives for the better. These five stories are some of the finest epic length W/T centric fics I've read. I have all of these printed and bound and they have brought me much joy. I should note that some of these fics deal with the canon events of Seeing Red, but all ultimately end happily.

Title/Link: The Gift of Sorrow
Author: The Rainbow Writers
Rating: PG, later chapters NC-17, all clearly noted
Pairing(s): Willow/Tara, gen
Spoilers: Everything up to and including all of season six.
Warnings/Triggers: Psychic trauma, depression, use of medication
Summary: It would be fair to say that the events in Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Six created a schism in the fan base of this popular show. Not only did it divide all of the existing couples, it killed one of the most recent popular members of the cast, dragged one of the shows most beloved characters to the very depths of her soul, making her someone that people hardly recognized and made fans watch the moral demise of the slayer herself. It was a very hard season to watch, and caused many long term fans turn away from the show. We, like many were unhappy with the progress this season began, and decided to write our own next season, to address some of the issues that we felt needed righting. This story is the result.

The other chapters can be found HERE, towards the bottom.

Reccers Note: Sadly, this story is unfinished. The duo that is the Rainbow Writers were finally reunited several years ago and have since made a home together, yet struggle with health and real life issues that hinder the creative process. The story does stop at a stable point and is well worth your time. This is arguably my favorite fanfic ever.

Sorry. It's a bit of a naff description, but I'm not in the right headspace to categorise properly.

These are five fics I really enjoyed in 2009. They don't have anything in common and one of them (tragically) is a WIP. I have another post's worth of recs for another day, which is similarly lacking in an overall theme.

Five crossover stories I've enjoyed this year, all pretty long; three are complete, the other two are WIP. Sorry, can't seem to access the tags for this!

My Immortal by Elisi (83,300 words, FR13) is probably going to make everyone's crossover list this year, and win a shedload of awards. It's a Torchwood crossover which asks "What if the Immortal was Captain Jack Harkness?" Set pre-Torchwood S1 and post Chosen, and fully canon compliant with both of them. There are two short sequels linked to it on the same site.
Muppets, Lions, Orcs, Elves and Harry Potter )

MUCH later - apologies, for some reason I was sure that Counts of Blood was complete. It isn't, it's WIP.

I've loved Spike/Fred since the summer that BtVS ended and we learned that Spike was moving to AtS. I wasn't alone; quite a few Spike/Fred fanfics cropped up at that time, and these are some wonderful examples. All feature the tenderly erotic romance characteristic of Spredfics in general -- along with a wee bit of goofiness here and there, 'cause it wouldn't be Fred without some goof. ;D

Dawn is a great character *as well as* a great plot device. She's a teenager, hence, pretty inpredictable. She's a Key, so she can have unusual hidden powers. She's a creative person - ergo, she can indulge in unexpected hobbies. She's a Slayer's sister, literally made from Buffy - so she can be self-sacrificing, petty, courageous, bossy, sweet...

Dawn of the Dead by [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy
Ensemble, PG-13. What if Dawn had been vamped in All the Way? First of all, it would be incredible fun. Second, it's a chance to reimagine BtVS and AtS mythology. Thirdly, such plot twist gives us a fresh look at moral dilemmas in Buffyverse. Four: the story is written in drabbles and practically each drabble delves into a situation worthy of a separate fic. Dense, compact and, may I repeat again - uproariously funny!

With all the lovely slash going around, the back-in-the-day Spillowy goodness has found itself on the back burner so I present some fics that should bring to mind a time when the fandom was young and everything in fanfic was bright and new. In no particular order...

1. The Hand That Wields the Scapel by Medea - Who can forget Medea's great epic tale, Masters and Minions? If you enjoyed that, you should love this as well. THTWTS is a AU historical look at a vampire named William and a young doctor, Willow Rosenberg. He's wicked and creepy and it's oh so believable. I loved this immensely.

2. Odalisque by Elenorlaura - This is one of my all time favorite fics...EVAH! Another delve into an AU historical scene, Odalisque is a haunting look at what happens to a young witch made into a vampire's chew toy. Not always pretty but always captivating, this is a must read if you like it when the vamps are bad. Sadly it is unfinished.

3. Bonded, by Sinecure. - Fighting a demon, Willow and Spike become bonded. The angst level is on high as is the romance. I was immediately drawn in by how realistically the characters were portrayed. A great read all around!

4. Learning Curve by KallieRose - Willow is dying, Giles asks Spike for a favor. The shit hits the fan after that. Loads of plot and drama and surprising spurts of humor that Kallierose does so well.

5. Fleurs de Mal by Aileen E. - Willow needs help with a school paper on poetry, and she enlists Spike to help her understand Symbolism and the Bohemian lifestyle of nineteenth century poets. And he does a little more than that. It's hot. Go read. Enough said.

Five WIPs worth waiting for in 2008 and beyond. My criteria are great writing, memorable plots and super in-character characterizations. Also WIPness.

Item Title or Description: So Crazy It Just Might Work
Creator’s Name: [livejournal.com profile] savoytruffle
Pairing: Xander/Spike, ensemble
Rating: Mature
Why: Because it's Angel: The Series with Xander in Los Angeles instead of Cordy and [livejournal.com profile] savoytruffle is the master of the form. Gay!Xander fits surprisingly well into Cordy's shoes (only not literally - because hello, male) and banters with Angel better than anyone. I'd be reading this story even if Xander's wiles hadn't convinced a newly chipped Spike that fighting the good fight at Angel's side (or - y'know - a few feet to the left, possibly above or ahead of him. Wherever the excitement is) sounds like a good idea. Each part is a rewritten episode complete in itself. There's no truffle quite like this truffle for reminding me why I love Buffy.

When compiling my favourite fics from this year I discovered a number that aren’t common pairings: Xander/Oz, Riley/Graham, Xander/Connor and Xander/Larry. 1. [livejournal.com profile] reremouse - Small Imperfections, Adult. Spike and Xander in Savannah a few years after Sunnydale caved in. The delightfully slow pace of this WIP fits the pace of life in hot Savannah – and the slow developing of a relationship between Spike and Xander. [livejournal.com profile] reremouse’s fic is always wonderful to read because it’s so witty, smart, funny and moving, and this is a WIP I encourage you to jump on (even if you’re resistance to WIPs) because it’s the type of story perfectly suited to the WIP format.Click here for the other 4 awesome fics )
