Just a reminder that Top 5's 2021 season closes in 9 hours!

Take Care of the Rest by Hannah. There's something soft and kind about this look at how Buffy's life might have been a bit better had she taken a job at a local funeral home when first coming to Sunnydale.

These are ones I had to rec as I love them so but didn't fit into any categories. And please pardon my lack of "why this is so great" comments. Other people can write whole paragraphs on that topic. Me? I'm more along the lines of "I really like it."

Ten Things That Never Happened in the Buffy FandomThe spell that created Dawn didn’t effect just the tv show.
Mr Spike: Spike’s visits to the children’s ward of the hospital.
Business as Usual: From the summary: What if Spike had been telling the truth when he made his sarcastic remark about visiting a nice tea-room at the garbage dump during Season 5’s The Replacement? Eeee! I adore Agnes Pringle.
Magpie: Strange deaths and Xander is somehow a focus. The writing is incredibly beautiful.
Radio Silence From the summary: The Gentlemen drop by Night Vale. This poses something of a problem for a radio host who depends on his voice to communicate. Beer good foamy always writes excellent stories.

[personal profile] thenewbuzwuzz is a staple of the online BtVS fandom. She not only participates here each year, but helps run Seasonal Spuffy and the Sunnydale Herald. But one of her greatest contributions to the fandom, in my opinion, is her advocacy for poetry as a fanwork medium. I certainly never would have tried it if it hadn't been for her inspiration. Here are a few of my favorite buzwuzz poems.

The Limericked Adventures of Bob the Hellmouth Cop
This was the poem that started it all for me. It was the winner of a contest on the now sadly defunct Sunnydale Fanfic Club podcast and her episode opened my eyes to the potential of fandom poetry. (Actually, the podcast wound up introducing us both to each other's work, eventually leading to our ongoing beta exchange.)

The poem itself is priceless. Using the limerick format to explore the POV of a clueless Sunnydale cop is just too good. I mean, consider this stanza:

I had trouble coming up with a theme, since this is literally "two fics I read this year and really loved" + "some other stuff I love." XD Anyway, I hope folks enjoy! I've certainly gotten a lot of enjoyment out of buffyversetop5 over the years. <3

or something close to a white hat anyway! I'm exhausted so this list may be shortish on descriptions but anything I recommend with Ethan in it will be near and dear to my heart.

1.
Absent Friends by il mio capitano. Oh, yeah, awesome. I recently asked if anyone could find this story for me. Basically all I'd recalled was the pub crawl based on The World's End and that Ethan was in it. Turns out it features Giles rather than Xander but given how fond I am of Giles and Ethan together, that was hardly a drawback. This one's more white-hatish rather than an out and out white-hat tale.

[livejournal.com profile] summer_of_giles is one of my favourite communities, so here are five things that caught my eye this year. I should give a disclaimer that I’m way behind with the entries, so I’m sure there is a pile of other stuff I could have recced that I just haven’t got to as yet.

It’s always illuminating to see the Buffy ‘verse through external eyes, and in [livejournal.com profile] punch_kicker15’s The English Patient: Seven Times Giles Visited the Hospital(and One Time He Didn’t) we see Giles across the seven seasons through the eyes of a resident physician at Sunnydale Hospital. This is good stuff.

More Giles goodness this way... )

Since people seemed quite taken with the first set here are five more, probably better known than the first set.

Living History by LizMarcs
Rating: PG, Worksafe
Some people have come from a place far, far away and a time far, far ahead to ask for help on an urgent matter. The time they were aiming for? February 2008. The place? Moscow. The problem? Somehow they've ended up in Cleveland, September 2003. And that’s just the beginning of the trouble; they seem to be descendants of the Scoobies and are determined not to change the past... but they haven't reckoned with Xander. Superbly written with a fascinating plot, some of the most beautifully crafted OCs I've ever seen and a wonderful portrayal of Xander and Faith. Very highly recommended!

The HP 'verse is the commonest one for fics where the author re-writes history by inserting a character (internal or external) who knows what's supposed to happen and is determined to change things but the Buffy 'verse has its examples too...

1. Martian Manhunter by Mediancat
Rating: PG, Worksafe
As the result of a bet that we spend most of the story waiting to find out the nature of, Veronica Mars is in the Buffyverse, knowing what's coming and unable to do anything about it... or can she? If you're familiar with mediancat's work then you're probably already anticipating wonderful writing. If you're a fan of the Veronica Mars series then look no further: this is for you! :-)

Five of my favorite parody fics, arranged from shortest to longest.

Spike's Fury by [livejournal.com profile] coalitiongirl. Buffy, Angel, Spike, PG-13. The alternate ending of season 8 comics. Much better than canon one.

Some favorite year 2014 stories that - in one way or another - are about point of view. (Or at least I consider them to be.)
Any bad English in summaries is mine and shouldn't be blamed on fic authors.

Illusions (Angel, Spike, OC, PG-13) by [livejournal.com profile] ash_carpenter. Brilliant outsider POV story, showing that in Sunnydale getting it almost right is never enough. (And you read it right - ash wrote PG-13 gen story, her hand slipped.)

snickfic: Buffy looking over her shoulder (Darla)

1. Devouring Time, by [livejournal.com profile] quinara
pre-series; one-shot.
Darla goes on safari! I love the portrayal of Darla here, that she will dare the hazardous African sun for the sheer experience of the thing. The writing is gorgeous, the whole thing is suffused with sunshine, the setting is beautifully evoked (and we all know how I am about setting). This fic reminds me anew just how much I love Darla.

1. Crazy Madcap Redemption, by [livejournal.com profile] hello_spikey
Ats S5; Spike/Dru; longfic.
In which Dru gets a chance to choose who she is and become her own person. Dru finds Spike hanging about Wolfram & Hart, and Spike, heartsore, lonely, and remembering sweet times past, takes it upon himself to save her. This doesn't work out quite how either of them expect. It's all very satisfying, with lovely characterizations and occasional bits of Spikey's hilarious dialogue.

1. Shadow Thought It Be, by [livejournal.com profile] penwiper26. Giles/OFC.
In which one Elisabeth, itinerant academic and BtVS fan, stumbles into Sunnydale and can't figure out how to leave. Elisabeth is so fully realized a character, so rich in flaws and quirks, that I can't be bothered to care that according to the author this is technically a self-insert fic. The writing is intelligent and hilarious and wonderful, Elisabeth's frequent metafictional observations are great fun, and her gradual relationship with Giles totally worked for me. This is very much a fic that doesn't sound like it ought to work but really, really does.

I don't think I'm alone in wanting stories of the Aurelian vampires before Sunnydale. Preferably stories with something other than (or in addition to) horror, gore, and cruelty. 2010 did not lack for choice:

Whispering Death by [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni  (PG13)
Spike, Dru, and Darla enjoy the Spanish Civil War, each in their own way.

Spike’s Victims: Victim no. 10,876, cir. 1895 by [livejournal.com profile] dampersnspoons  (NC17) (First person POV)
The title is the summary. There is also another in the series, take a look.

This Thing of Earth and Darkness by [livejournal.com profile] gillo  (PG)
It takes the whole family to raise a vampire, when the vampire’s mummy is Dru.

New York (1970) by [livejournal.com profile] duh_i_read  (PG)
It all comes down to style.

Theatre of War by [livejournal.com profile] meridian_rose (PG13)
Spike and Dru harvest the battlefields of Europe. (Yes, another war story. I like to see how our vamps interact with the sweep of history. It's a thing.)

Bonus NC-17 offering, not for everyone:
The Body Electric by [livejournal.com profile] sevendeadlyfun  (NC17)
Unexpected uses for new technologies!

Strictly speaking, only four of these are actually set in S4, but the other one is also full of S4 flavor, and all feature the delightful unlikeliness of early-season Spuffy.

Sorry. It's a bit of a naff description, but I'm not in the right headspace to categorise properly.

These are five fics I really enjoyed in 2009. They don't have anything in common and one of them (tragically) is a WIP. I have another post's worth of recs for another day, which is similarly lacking in an overall theme.

There's no proper title for this (I also had it down as 'Where's there's a skill', and other cheesy headings). The topic here is poems and fics which draw on something bigger than fandom, weaving Jossverse motifs into wider cultural themes, but never losing sight of the fandom audience. (In other words, they are very, very clever, but also hugely fun for fans).

[livejournal.com profile] quinara, Spikeid II and III. Because it's in epic iambic pentameter, and based on the Aeneid, and yet it's accessible, funny, touching and in-voice. They're heroes, dammit. They deserve this poem.
