So much great art has been posted on Tumblr this year that I could easily have done more if I'd had more time, but here is my last Top 5 for this round.

1. Darla by but-theres-wolves

2. Angelus by crabuncle

3. Ripper by flummoxedangel

4. Willow by juliabe

5. Tara by deanhisnippleisout

In my FFN forays, I have been noticing some of the other poetry by [fanfiction.net profile] cagd (who is represented in @stultiloquentia's Jossverse Poetry Masterlist with one poem under her LJ name [livejournal.com profile] trixiefatcat ). cagd has become easily one of my favorite Buffy poets. She has written lots of beautiful free verse; what I've read so far tends to center on the Fanged Four, especially on Spike's platonic relationships. These poems go deep into characterization, and they give me all of the feels.

Lunch Money (Spike&Dawn, T)
Broken Toys (Liam, Drusilla, William, T)
Drusilla's Tears (Drusilla, Spike, T)
Numb in Her Forgiveness (Spike&Joyce, T)
Wild Roses on a Grave (Spike&Tara, T)

I’ll finish my spamming with five fics that have nothing in common apart from the fact I thought they were great and they were written in 2017.

A new ficlet by [livejournal.com profile] baudown is always a pleasure because I love her elegant use of language and the way she can paint such a detailed portrait in such a short time. Trapped is a prime example - it’s Xander contemplating the contradictions of his vampire, beause no one can do contrary quite like Spike.

And another list based on the request by red_satin_doll - five stories about voiceless victims.

An Unexpected Afterlife by [livejournal.com profile] settiai. Tara was surprised to discover that being dead wasn't really that different from being alive. And even thoug story is from Tara's POV, she is not speaking just for herself. Tara/Cassie Newton, G.

So while I was sorting through files for my previous post in order to include one of my favorite of [livejournal.com profile] teragramm's icons I realized "Oh but she also produced this one....and hey, what about this one....and I really loved this banner...."   So the only sensible thing to do was make another post: 4 icons and one banner. Icons are listed chronologically.  This is an artist I tend to associate with clear, bright colors (especially "teragramm blue"), but obviously she is every bit as skilled with muted tones and deeply saturated effects. Once again, I'll let the images do the talking:

1) Drusilla retro (Center Crop) for [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20 Round 10 (June)

2) Faith #2 for [livejournal.com profile] whedon_elite Challenge 123 (July) we123b_iconbyteragrammaugust2015_BMC.jpg

3) Buffy "Happiness" for [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20 Round 12 (August) teragrammhappinessicon20in20rd12august2015.jpg

4) Tara #3 for [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20 Challenge 58 (November) teragrammSS58-5_2015.jpg

no title

5) Winged Buffy Banner (February)
Speaks to my soul, my Buffy-loving heart, and my Winged Buffy kink all at once. Dean Jackson's quote suits the character beautifully as do the ethereal, almost abstract wings that resemble extensions of her gown fluttering in the breeze, rather than literal feathered wings.

I wanted to do an icon post inspired by [livejournal.com profile] kikimay's post one year ago but found it impossible to narrow the hundred of icons I've seen this year to just five, so I decided in the interest of fairness - and spreading the love to as many talented folks as I could - to divide the posts up by icontests. This first one is for [livejournal.com profile] whedon_elite The icons are listed in alphabetical order of artist's name (not preference).

1) Faith 5x5 (brighter version) by [livejournal.com profile] double_dutchess for Challenge 123 (July)

2) Illyria #1 by [livejournal.com profile] julie_izumi for Challenge 112 (March)

3) Beneath You (Spuffy) by [livejournal.com profile] sandy_s for Challenge 128
In fairness this entire post could have been five icons from this challenge alone.

4) Eskimo Willow by [livejournal.com profile] xclaire_delunex for Challenge 133 (Dec)
This one is also a tiny "cheat" in that it was an alt rather than an entry.

5) Tara Family Golden Glow by [livejournal.com profile] xlittledreams for Challenge 115 (April)

Here are five [livejournal.com profile] open_on_sunday entries I really enjoyed last year. And looking back through links I’ve collected I’m embarrassed that I didn`t get around to commenting on a few on them, so I really must recify that! But that aside, they are all great in their different ways.

I’ve Got You Under My Skin by [livejournal.com profile] xspike4evax is a lovely look inside Cordy’s head as she wonders what she sees in Xander.

I've already focused on some of [livejournal.com profile] kwritten's Buffy/Tara fics in my last rec post; here's more by various authors focusing on Tara herself rather than as half of a ship:

The Real You by [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni (Tara, Dawn, mentions of Buffy and ensemble, S5-S6?); for [livejournal.com profile] eilowyn: Tara spends some time, that summer, trying to work out when Dawn became. Too few fics explore Tara's relationship with Dawn but also Tara's skill as a witch in her own right. This fills a need; satisfying and poignant.

Filling Holes by [livejournal.com profile] foxstarreh (Tara, implied W/T, canon-compliant S6, post-Once More With Feeling) There's this hole in her head.

Her Own also by [livejournal.com profile] foxstarreh (Tara, implied W/T, canon-compliant S6, between Tabula Rasa and Smashed.) Tara moves out of Revello and back to campus. Some of Tara's things are Willow's and she leaves those behind. Both of Fox's drabbles are incredibly haunting.

The Things You Find in Vending Machines by the ininimitable [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip (Tara, Buffy, canon-compliant S4, post-New Moon Rising). This was written as a gift to me in return for the banner I'd made for her amazing fic "Soft and Pink and Very Sad"  ; a deleted scene that reminds me how hungry I am for more Buffy and Tara friendship scenes. Oh great. Not only is Buffy officially a dork, but Tara looks like a deer caught in the headlights, so now Buffy feels guilty… and still wigged out.

Eagles on the Wind by [livejournal.com profile] kerkevik_2014 (Tara/ Faith, post-series) Another gift for me; sly, sensual, confident Tara taking the lead with a Slayer whose cocky attitude doesn't mask her nerves or her fear of intimacy? YES, PLEASE.
"Aren't we gonna screw?"   /
Tara tutted at Faith; slowly undoing the buttons on her new wife's dress.

Dead Girls' Party by Erimthar (Post-series - Tara, Cordelia, Anya)
In the Buffyverse, being dead doesn't mean you don't have important work to do. Ever wonder why vampires don't simply kill Slayers in their sleep? This is why.

I think these five stories featuring Willow Rosenberg are all pretty darn awesome and I hope you agree:

1) Otherwise a Perfect Sky (Xander, Tara, Willow) by [livejournal.com profile] aadler - What can I say about this? It's brutal and yet somehow delicate, poetic yet gritty, and absolutely heartbreakingly perfect. This post-apocalyptic take on The Gift (a remix of [livejournal.com profile] deird1's also very terrific Come Crashing Down) stands with the best of them.

Four More Terrific Tales )

I couldn't come up with any unifying theme other than "I liked these."

Moon Gods by pug. Oz/Willow, Rated Teen.
This is a gorgeous description of a few moments for Oz and Willow on a full moon night in Season Four. Pug has a really different take on Oz/Willow than I’ve seen before, using evocative language and imagery to create something stark and poetic and beautiful.

I'd be the world's biggest liar if I claimed I could actually whittle down [livejournal.com profile] foxstarreh's stories last year to "five best" because
there are too many and all of them excellent; this is just a small sampling

"Those Things" - (Buffy/Angel/Spike; Dawn, post-NFA) This is the fic that turned me into a B/A/S shipper. Just lovely.

"On the Edge" - (Buffy, early-mid S6, canon compliant) "Buffy's afraid of drowning. She figures she should be afraid of heights now, too." Character study for a prompt by [livejournal.com profile] leni_ba.

"White Wedding" - (Willow/Tara, AU) One of the most chilling character studies of Willow I've ever read; controlling things (and people) has become all too easy.

"Ash" (Buffy, Angel, Spike; Buffy/Spike, post-Chosen) Spike left her nothing to hold onto after the Hellmouth; Angel offers a way to help. The numbness of grief before the damn of emotion breaks.

"Save the World" (Gen, Tara, Kennedy, AU episodic of Chosen) Exactly what I always imagined Tara's role would have been in Chosen, had she lived.  AWESOME. (Why aren't there more AU S7 fics with Tara in them? Get on it, fandom, pretty please.)

Bonus - yes, I'm cheating; but "Survivor's Reunion" (Gen, Buffy, Xander, Spike, Harmony, ensemble; post-Chosen) was one of my favorite comedic fics of the year. The gang meets up for their tenth year class reunion; Harmony is organizing the event. There will be monsters - and awkward conversations with ex-boyfriends.

How could I let the year go by with celebrating some stories that brought the pain in all the best ways? I couldn't, so here are some beautifully bleak tales to wrap the shiniest silver lining in foggy clouds:

1) Word Association (Buffy/Angel) by [livejournal.com profile] librarian2003: The summary of this reads "Be careful what you wish for" and I hesitate to offer more detail than that for fear of spoiling this tragic ride. Just know that it was written by Jo and that should be enough to get you clicking that link immediately. It's a masterpiece of pain and indifferent cruelty.

Because I couldn't leave well enough alone and Lucy wrote way too many good things to leave off for just one post. The superlatives remain the same. More shippiness here than the last post. In no particular order.

"Lover, I Think We're Falling" (NC-17, Buffy/Angel(us), AU of Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered, warnings for non-con) For the IWRY Marathon 2013 Very good, very, very dark, it reminds me if anything of [livejournal.com profile] snowpuppies's "Innocence (the if you love me remix)" .

"Shadows and Light" (Gen; Tara, Glory, episodic of "Tough Love") A look inside what Tara's thoughts, including her fears and the temptation to make it all "go away", during one of the most horrifying scenes in the entire series. Has a special place in my heart because Tara's heroism and sacrifice while she was tortured to protect Dawn is almost entirely taken for granted by fandom because she's a "good person".

"Wearing the Pants" (PG-13, Jenny/Giles, S2) Inspired by a prompt on <lj user=dragonyphonix>'s journal: "Jenny & Giles + pants". So much fun. Reminds me why I adored that pairing with a scene I wish we had seen, and could well have; once again, it reads like a scene that landed on the cutting room floor, thanks to crackling humor and spot-on character voices.

"Cut up Angels" (PG, Buffy, Faith, implied B/F, AtS S2 post-Sanctuary) - Another entry for [livejournal.com profile] kwritten's lady-love fest, this time in response to a prompt from [livejournal.com profile] ever_neutral: "Buffy/Faith: I don't like you human. You remind me of things I hate in me." Can be read as gen or shippy. Buffy visits Faith in prison. The thick glass that separates them is nothing to the barriers they've throw up between one another even as they crack and break.

"Just Another Small Fracture" (R, Willow/Spike, S3, AU of Lovers' Walk) In response to a request from [livejournal.com profile] snogged; Spike kidnaps Willow and things go...a bit differently. Simultaneously compassionate and disturbing, as it should be.

[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com
Five fannish "love letters" to my favorite underappreciated and overlooked friendship in the Buffyverse. Only two of these stories include Dawn "onscreen" but all of them mention her in some way, echoing S5's "Family". In a world defined by violence and certain death, Love is the most courageous possible choice, their gift to one another. Alphabetical by authors' pennames.

"Talk to Me (That's What Friends Are For)" by [livejournal.com profile] clockwork_hart1 - (Gen; Buffy, Tara, implied B/S & W/T; S6 episodic of "As You Were") Lucy's responded to my prompt for a Buffy and Tara friendship fic in which Tara "is a complex human being, NOT a perfect angel or saint". This lovely deleted scene that was everything I wanted and more. Buffy and Tara offer each other comfort, solace and support after Buffy breaks up with Spike and Tara reluctantly confesses her own anger towards Willow. Bonus: ([livejournal.com profile] comlodge's gorgeous banner for the story.)

"Re-Make, Re-Model" by [livejournal.com profile] elviswhataguy - (Buffy, Tara; implied B/T, early S6) Somewhat darker and more explictly "shippy" than "Warmth" (below); Buffy struggles with feelings of depression, anger, attraction to Tara as they try to bond with Tara via mundane things: schoolwork and soup. Deftly explores multiple similarities and parallels between the two characters that run deep beneath the apparent differences; an accurate portrayal of what depression actually feels like. (Credit, gratitude and a plate of warm home-made brownies to [livejournal.com profile] punch_kicker15 for introducing me to this author in their rec list.)

"Blurring the Lines" by [livejournal.com profile] kwritten - (Buffy/Tara; AU) The author's summary reads: AU- Tara doesn't die in "Seeing Red"; use of Key-canon. This is the one I'm having the hardest time describing (my brain is coming up with "Virginia Woolf?") Full disclosure: the first time I read this delicate, almost abstract open-ended prose-poem I didn't "get" it. It's not plotty in any traditional sense, it could be set almost anytime between the moment Buffy knows Dawn is the Key; it's probably S6 but could be the summer before S7. It feels like the seed of or a snippet from a true 'verse of it's own. MORE, PRETTY PLEASE? ETA: Kwritten just made my wish come true and added chapter two. *SQUEES*

"Take a Moment" by [livejournal.com profile] lanoyee - (Gen; Buffy, Dawn and ensemble, S6 post-Grave)  Buffy, Dawn, Giles and the Scoobies grieve for Tara at her funeral in this "deleted scene" fic that's part narrative, part prose-poem that satisfies what I want and need: proper tribute paid to Tara after her death and acknowledgement of her importance to beyond "Willow's partner". Spare and melancholy with a surprising warmth beneath the sadness, it gave me what I wanted AND needed. (Inspired this meta post that is one of my favorite things I have ever written.)

"Warmth" by thedissociation - (Buffy, Tara, Dawn, implied B/T; S6 episodic of Dead Things.) - Buffy's confession and breakdown to Tara in DT has been one of the most frequent and convenient starting points for Buffy & Tara fics; this is one of my favorite versions. Can be read as friendship or 'shippy' depending on which way you squint. The label or catagory isn't what matters here; the most important thing is the sense of "family"; the interweaving of sadness, love, confusion and hope; of emotional comfort freely given and reluctantly received.

Title: The Chosen
Author: Jet Wolf
Rating: PG
Summary: This is a very ambitious project which follows the episode format of BtVS and its story begins a few months after the end of the end of the TV show. It's more of a general fic which is a spiritual successor of the early seasons, despite being set after season seven but eventually Willow/Tara becomes its main 'ship.
Why I chose this: Because it has it all - brilliant characterization, long story-arcs, interesting original characters, humour, plot twists, etc. It combines my favourite couple, Willow/Tara, with loads and loads of terrific Scooby friendship scenes, not just between the usual suspects - Buffy, Xander and Willow but between say Kennedy and Dawn. Unfinished as of now but if one really demands closure they can always stop at the end of Season 8.

Thirteen years after Spike had mysteriously disappeared, Xander meets him by accident in the London underground. Where has Spike been all this time, and what is he hiding? In my (highly subjective) opinion, [livejournal.com profile] shadowscast writes the best Xander ever; seeing her writing again after a year of absence was a great joy. In her new story she introduces a simple and effective plot device I never encountered before - a potion that allows vampires to walk in the sunlight for a brief period of time - and she ingeniously exploits the idea on both narrative and metaphorical levels.

And the poor girl certainly has had a lot to lose in her young life. These ficlets and shots all revolve around that central, reoccuring theme that Dawn must constantly adapt to and cope with. The stories range in scope from Buffy running away after S2 and her death in S6, to the deaths of Joyce, Tara and Justin. One thing all these works have in common? Some really, really superb Dawn characterization.

1. The Flowers You Gave Me by[info]hands_of_blue
Dawn, Spike, PG, the summers between S2/S3 and S5/S6
Summary: It’s a special kind of day when it rains in Sunnydale.

Review: What I enjoyed so much about this fic is the slow evolution of Dawn's understanding of disappearance and death, first viewed from a child's eyes and then as a teenager. This fic touches on that inalienable truth of how perception changes with time and that patterns and cycles regularly arise. It's also a beautiful, tight piece that brings all the imagery back together by the end, sinching the story up neatly.
