Oh dear, another year where I read a lot of good fic and completely forgot to tag it so I could find it again, but here goes:

[livejournal.com profile] local_max's Making a Good Entrance and [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni's Connected both take on "Chosen", from very different perspectives, and both end up giving me a huge smile while still making some interesting commentary on the show. We critique because we love.

My top five stories of 2008 that were in some way unexpected. My criteria include unexpectedness, in-character voices, breezy writing skills and memorable happenings. There are stories I might not otherwise have read but was incredibly glad I did.

Item Title or Description: Spill
Creator’s Name: [livejournal.com profile] miriam_heddy
Pairing: Xander/Spike, Harry/Bob (Dresden Files)
Rating: Adult
Why: I haven't read Dresden Files but seeing an imperfect Spike and Xander through the eyes of a stranger who has a pretty intriguing pairing in the works himself with a ghost was compelling. The story itself? Pure fun. And fantastic Spike and Xander voices and snarky relationship all the while saving the world of course. Or at least Cleveland. From sex. Seriously.

My problem is that out of my fic-reading-time-pie the biggest slices are S/X, which leaves a lot smaller slices for everything else. Personally I’d like to solve this by having a bigger pie but RL isn’t very cooperative in this respect. So I ended up having one big slash category because I probably don’t have enough items for the various individual characters. But each one of these fascinated me in some way and just had to be recced.

(1) Bent Justice by [livejournal.com profile] toobusytowrite - NC-17 – This was that rarest of birds – a slashfest with plot. This story has a variety of threads that are wound about each other until the last 4 chapters or so. It’s a long fic compared to most and I was very impressed that the author could keep it interesting for that length of time. It’s Spangel but there are a whole host of characters who make an appearance in this human AU, and it was downright fun for me to see them appearing one by one in this universe. I’m glad I came across it as a WIP because taking on a long story can be a hard thing to squeeze into a busy schedule. But as soon as I read it, I was eagerly awaiting the updates to this as they spilled out.

Fics of unusual scope and originality. These authors thought big and outside the box to produce some extraordinary reading.

Ok, so some of these are total WTF pairings for me, personally, but RPGs can be incredibly addictive even for non-participants and the quality writing and/or crafty story lines herein so completely sucked me in that I found myself checking daily for updates.
Note: these are all, pretty much, rated Adult

This way to RPG crack! )

Non-LJ life affects us all. I always wonder where our fan fic writers find the time and creativity to write all the great stories they give us. Sometimes, for one reason or another, WIPs take a back seat. Personal life, medical reasons, family, the muse took a vacation, or even less than kind feedback can cause a WIP to put aside until another day. This post is not to criticize or beg for updates. It’s just a way for me to say to the writers: Take your time. We’re still here. And when you’re ready to write it again, we’re eagerly awaiting with support and adoration. We love your story.

And for the readers out there, these are still amazing and spellbinding stories even though they’re not finished yet. Read ‘em. Get hooked! And watch for the new chapters!
