For me the year has been all about starting up our shiny new website, sunnydaleafterdark.com. Lots of work went into it from a dedicated team, and now it holds hundreds of fics, art and other cool things.

Many folks have reposted from elsewhere, but some of the material is exclusive to the site, so that's the only place you'll find it. Here are five stories worth the reading:

Not a Monster [NC-17] by Grief Counselling (formerly dampersandspoons) and Dusty - still a WIP but lots of chapters there already. Two outstanding writers at the peak of their form.

I Hear a Very Gentle Sound [R] by VioletMoon - a lovely, touching one-shot set in S6.

PS: Not A Date![R] by VeroNyxK84
S7 Spike gives Buffy care and support when she really needs it. Very sweet.

Aeternum in Anno [NC-17] by Chelle shortish but good as Buffy lives the year after Spike went up in flames.

Daisy in the Dark [PG-13] by Dusty. Spike can't stop visiting Buffy's grave. He meets someone else mourning a person they cared for.

Just a reminder that Top 5's 2021 season closes in 9 hours!

Take Care of the Rest by Hannah. There's something soft and kind about this look at how Buffy's life might have been a bit better had she taken a job at a local funeral home when first coming to Sunnydale.

Let's wrack up those negative emotions, shall we?

1. Twelfth Sister: The Council's always known kill one Slayer you get a new one, but now they realize they can kill one Slayer and revive her. It's so dark but so beautifully written. I just love this story. Here's a snippet: "Because, gentleman," he replied, his voice now tinged with a hint of acid, "why should we simply settle for another Kendra? Why should we settle for just one, when we could have a dozen? When we could have a hundred?"

2. Falling Like Icarus: Oh, this is so sad. I don't want to give anything away so I'll just say Xander/Anya and share the summary: She'd come so close to the sun, to joy, but now her wings are melting and she's falling, like Icarus. Xander and Anya's world is shattered with just one word.

3. Extinction: A drabble from Open on Sunday. I'm not sure anything I say here could do it justice. Powerful.

4. Mission Accomplished: Poignant. The unexpected difficulty of a Watcher's last duty to his Slayer. I adore the juxtaposition of the explanation of this terrible duty in Watcher training vs. the reality of having to face it.

5. Blackout: A dying Xander brings his daughter to Spike and Angel. Every time I read this - every time - I cry at the end. This story takes a tragic even and makes it heartwarming.

I don't usually read WIPs, but I am making an exception for these ones, because they're just so good or because I know they're going to be good. I may be cheating a bit here, as several of the WIPs in this list were not started in 2020, but since they all got updated this year I think it still counts. To compensate, two of them are REALLY recent.

Can you believe that more than twenty years after the show first aired numerous fanfics are still being written and published? It shows that BtVS really has stood the test of time and that the fandom is still alive and kicking. Yay! So from all those wonderful new stories here are five which are short and Spuffy and have been first published in 2019.

[livejournal.com profile] summer_of_giles always gives us lovely stuff each year, and here are just a few that I loved this year. Of course, there are a lot more, so make sure you go check up the comm for the rest of this year's lovelies.

The Tyranny of Numbers by [livejournal.com profile] aadler is fascinating. It’s Giles, Dawn and set well post Chosen. To say much about it would give the game away, so I’m just going to go with the author’s summary - People change. Sometimes the changes don’t make sense. Sometimes they make … a kind of sense. Now go read and find out what’s going on.

When I discovered fandom and fic back in the early 2000's, there are some stories that stood out because they made me realise just how wonderfully malleable canon could be in the right hands. That realisation expanded my universe! :)

I’ve recced Te’s stories many times before, but my love for her stuff bears repeating. Post Grad series blew my tiny, sheltered mind when I read it early on in my adventures in fandom. It made me understand the power of ‘what if’. This is Spike/Xander, plot, porn and so much ‘oh my goodness’ that it makes my eyes cross just thinking about it.

1) Sands of Time  by James and Wolfing: I can never describe how much this story means to me. It was the first fanfic I ever read. It holds a special place in my heart. It's Xander angst at its finest and I'm a huge Xander angst fan. I love the Xander/Giles relationship here, perhaps even more than the Xander/Spike relationship. I love the chapter about Giles' family and Xander meeting them for the first time. I also love the part where Xander tastes his father's blood on Spike's lips - so chilling!

2) The Giles Thing by DrSquidlove: Another Xander fic I adore! It had probably the best portrayal of Xander's parents that I've ever seen in fics, and IMO the closest to the show's canon. The author writes the relationships between the characters so perfectly, and the characters' reaction to the relationship between Xander and Giles, especially Buffy and Joyce, was amazing.

3) Cuckoo in the Nest by Liz-Marcs: Told completely from Tony Harris' unreliable narration! I loved watching the show through Xander's father's eyes! A wonderful character study.

4) Sidelines by Anna S: The perfect "What if Xander was the gay Scooby instead of Willow" fic!

5) Late Night Double Feature by Kimberly A: The sequel for Just a Jump to the Left which I adore because it's the closest of an unrequited love story where Xander is in love with Spike while Spike is oblivious that I can find! Xander faces the consequences of the time loop in the previous fic, and realizes that making changes in his relationship with Spike isn't quite as easy as he'd like.

So here are my Top 5 Post-Chosen Spuffy Recs that are superclassic (at least a decade old):

1) Disenchantment by Herself. This story made me fall in love with Spuffy! The depiction of a Buffy in her 30s, still alive, kind of ok, but just so lonely in a way she couldn't even articulate. Some angst, but the joy Buffy feels at her unexpected reunion with Spike truly makes me emotional, even upon re-reading. And the sex in this fic is so hot. There is an unfinished sequel I wish she'd finished.

2) The Butterfly Effect by CousinJean. A very beautiful fic where a post-Chosen Buffy travels back in time to Season 2. Buffy and Spike end up connecting in a sort of inevitable, visceral way that show how truly drawn to one another they are, regardless of the timing of their meeting.

3) Pinch Hitter by Dreamweaver. This post-Chosen Buffy gets sent into an alternated dimension early Season 5. Of course she goes to find Spike to bang! Spike is amenable. There is some pretty good biting in this smut if you're into that.

4) Only Time Will Tell by Damperandspoons. I had trouble deciding on which Victorian fic to include on this list, but ended up with this one. It's not totally historically accurate... but Buffy and William are very sweet in this fic, and the ending is satisfying. Enjoy!

5) My Life Closed Twice by Anaross. Being in a post-NFA Spike's poetry class is such a treat. It is worth a read, whether you agree with Anaross' take on Buffyverse lore or not.

Why did I decide to rec only decade-old Post-Chosen fic? No reason, just felt like it! Probaby you have all read these classic fics... they are very popular. But if you haven't, they are an excellent place to start.

1. Brace Yourself by Enigmatic Blue. Spike / Buffy. A rewrite  of season 6 where Buffy more easily accepts her attraction to Spike. A ritual to free Spike of a curse has unexpected consequences. And, given this category, I’m pretty sure you know what those consequences are. *grin*

I'd love to say I'm so nice that I deliberately fulfilled [livejournal.com profile] red_satin_doll's request, but I just happend to have the same idea. Still, here you go.

1. A Nice Little Business by Lilachigh - Alice Pringle. Sounds like an OC, doesn’t she, but no, technically she fits this category. In the author’s words: the vampire lady referred to by Spike in The Replacement, when, sarcastically, he tells the Scoobies that he has been having a cup of tea with the lady who runs a tea-stall in the local garbage dump.

I do this every year, so why break with tradition? Here are five amazing stories that feature Willow as a central figure.

1) Sewing the Seeds (missing scene from The Beating of the Bounds) (Willow, The Tailor) by [livejournal.com profile] sparrow2000: If all this does is get you to read the incredible The Beating of the Bounds, a Xander-centric AU of superlative depth and artistry, then my work is done. But this tale - featuring Willow - has its own brilliance and needs to be appreciated on its own terms. It's subtle and deceptively prosaic but look beneath its smooth surface and the depths are churning. Join me in ordering Sparrow to write more Willow. She has a knack for it.

The Lion Laying Down With The Lambness Of Xander And Larry by [livejournal.com profile] reremouse: Xander/Larry. What I'd pay to see the conclusion to this one? The Xander voice is perfection. Red Apple Falls by [livejournal.com profile] _dellamore makes me want to go hide under the bed. Bodies are stacking up all over Sunnydale. The Scoobies think they know who’s responsible, but only Xander knows why. It’s amazing what can happen when love becomes obsession. Make sure you read this with the light on.

Since they're all written for prompts, make sure you read the author's notes as well as the ficlets. Needless to say, Fag Ends being a Spuffy short fics comm, all of them are Spuffy in some way.

Willow is a fascinating and complex character to me, and I really enjoy fiction that reflects that. Here are five classic Willow fics. I'm going to be cautious and label them all not worksafe.

1) The Power and The Other Thing by [livejournal.com profile] mosca.Willow/Tara, Willow/Glory (not really the focus of the story) Gorgeous Wishverse story, with Nerdy Willow, Super-witch Willow, and Scary Willow all wrapped up into one. I really enjoy the way the characters from Angel were worked in. The tone is a bit chilly and remote and matches the world-building wonderfully. This is one of the most hopeful Wishverse stories I've read, but the hope seems earned. This is one of those stories that I think should get a lot more recognition than it has.

Back today with five of my favourite stories by [livejournal.com profile] shadowscast. I love her stories so much. She writes the best Spander (not a pairing I otherwise read) and can, when she wants, deliver a killer punch to the emotional gut.

Sunshine, Spike/Xander, NC17 for one short, but explicit sex scene. Thirteen years have passed since Spike mysteriously disappeared in Africa. What's he been doing all that time? On a visit to London for a happy occasion, Xander gets to find out.

For my very first post to this community I wanted to list some of my favorite Buffyverse meta essays of the year. Fiction seems to be the overwhelming fan vehicle of choice, at least here on LJ/DW, but it was meta essays that pulled me into this fandom. These are by no means "the best" of the year (my full list would be closer to 10 or 11 essays), but represent some that are my touchstones for this 'verse and it's fandom:

"Rules of Engagement: Violence and Hyperreality in the Buffyverse"  by  [livejournal.com profile] lostboy_lj   may be my "if you only read one meta from 2012" choice. Why Buffy and Spike's relationship in S6 is not directly analogous to abusive relationships in RL, using "Smashed" as it's focal point.

"Buffy, the Vampire Slayer vs Buffy the Vampire Slayer"  by  [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy.   Most post-modernist thinky-thoughts; how the show's title represents the central problem of the narrative for it's titular protagonist, and how Buffy resolves her dilemma in "Chosen".

"Word of Willow: "Witch", Mirrors, and Mommy Issues"  by  [livejournal.com profile] local_max .   What I hope to be the first of several Willow-centric essays from someone who has plumbed the depths of Willow's character more thoroughly and compassionately than any fan I know of.

"Warren Mears"  by  [livejournal.com profile] itsnotmymind .   Draws parallels between Warren, Faith and Spike, how they mirror, intertwine and intersect thematically and within the story itself, and what they represent re: Buffy's psychology. Wonderfully complex.

"Where Did I Go? A Farewell to the Buffybot"   by  [livejournal.com profile] mcjulie .   One of the few essays I've seen in these parts about one of the Buffyverse's most memorable characters. (While I'm here, I'll note that mcjulie has also taken on the awesome task of continuing the   "Episode Polls"   and discussion where [personal profile] gabrielleabelle  left off, starting with S5's  "Tough Love".  Especially recommended is her poll and meta commentary on "The Gift".)

http://dark-solace.org/elysian/viewstory.php?sid=3006&warning=NC-17
NC-17 ~165,000 words. Buffy/Spike, Spike/other.
What if Buffy's slayer potential has been discovered by The Watchers Council in due time? What if she'd been sent to The Watchers Academy where the potential slayers get education and training? What if The Council had caught the members of The Fanged Four and kept them as prisoners and sparring partners for future slayers?
There definitely are some elements of Hogwarts template in the set-up, but the story itself is fresh and original. This unique AU-verse is based on the premise that in the middle of XX century The Watcher Council and The Initiative joined forces, and one of the consequences was the modernization of the Slayer system. As a result, we see all the familiar faces in the new circumstances. Complex, inventive plotting, spot-on voices, fast-moving narrative, paradoxical morality and fascinating choices make "The Rose" a must-read.

In this love affair that spans centuries and knows no limit, Buffy and Spike are forever missing their moment.  Verity captures the essence of the Victorian period in this beautiful award-winning one-shot that explores the concept of love and Spiritualism.  The effect of this story is, quite simply, profound.

The sun is so bright, and he wants to pull her into the shade, back with him, where it's safe, where he can keep her whole, or at least no more broken than he is. "I know enough of heaven," he says, at last. "No other place could hold you."

There's a little bit of fic here, a little bit of meta, even some graphics, and no overriding theme aside from all of these being things that I enjoyed...though it's fair to say that much of what I enjoy has a Buffy/Spike perspective to it.

1. [livejournal.com profile] crazydiamondsue's Meta Recs Post - Lots of great links here, going back to earlier times in Buffy fandom. If you want to explore some of the best Jossverse scholarship out there, this is a perfect list to start from.

2. [livejournal.com profile] penny_lane_42's Buffy/Spike Shipper Manifesto - A gorgeous summing up of why many fans find Buffy and Spike's relationship to be so compelling, followed up with a terrific list of fanfiction recommendations.

3. [livejournal.com profile] knifeedgefic's West of the Moon, East of the Sun - An EPIC Spike/Buffy story, set in an AU S5 (no Dawn, no Glory), with great character voices and a compelling, fairy-tale influenced plot.

4. [livejournal.com profile] stultiloquentia's Take Five, Everybody - Smutty and sweet Buffy/Spike post-NFA reunion fic.

5. [livejournal.com profile] _jems_'s a cap a day project - Okay, this project is not exclusively Buffyverse (though I'm linking to only the Buffy entries), but there is a lot of Buffy represented. Basically, [livejournal.com profile] _jems_ posts one of her favorite screencaps every day. Cirrostratus (Gunn/Wes/Fred, NC-17)

A beautifully written and bittersweet fic about a poly relationship between the trio.

The Front Lines (Gunn & Robin Wood, G)

Robin Wood remembers Charles Gunn in this contemplative fic.

Hi,

here are five fics by the Fanfic Author I loves the mostest, Jet Wolf who, with her The Chosen S8 continuation, gave me back Tara, for which I will be eternally grateful. RL has stalled much in the way of new fic-writing for some time now, but the world she created in The Chosen is the one that captures that illusive magical quality that drew me to a show where, if I'm honest, none of the main characters; including Spike initially, seemed to draw any empathy from me (also be aware - No Spike! in The Chosen).

Jet Wolf is my master now!

Oh, and yes, the funniest is last again - I know, tiresomely predictable, ain't it?

Freedom by [livejournal.com profile] purplefeen:

When Spike grows tired of being beaten down in his relationship with Buffy, he finds solace in a D/s relationship with Willow that blossoms into something that changes both their lives for the better. This is an adult story for adult readers who are looking for something both affecting and erotic. No one writes sexy Spillow better than this lady, and this story is proof.

snickfic: Buffy looking over her shoulder (ep Something Blue)

1. Impossible, by Bitterness
AU S7
A huge, sprawling, plotty, ensemble-cast S7 AU. The Spuffy reunion and rebuilding is slow and cautious and occasionally fraught, but beautiful. The Buffy-Dawn relationship is wonderful, too. There's fun plot stuff and serious plot stuff. Even the actual pregnancy developments are handled gracefully and with aplomb.

These five stories are some of the finest epic length W/T centric fics I've read. I have all of these printed and bound and they have brought me much joy. I should note that some of these fics deal with the canon events of Seeing Red, but all ultimately end happily.

Title/Link: The Gift of Sorrow
Author: The Rainbow Writers
Rating: PG, later chapters NC-17, all clearly noted
Pairing(s): Willow/Tara, gen
Spoilers: Everything up to and including all of season six.
Warnings/Triggers: Psychic trauma, depression, use of medication
Summary: It would be fair to say that the events in Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Six created a schism in the fan base of this popular show. Not only did it divide all of the existing couples, it killed one of the most recent popular members of the cast, dragged one of the shows most beloved characters to the very depths of her soul, making her someone that people hardly recognized and made fans watch the moral demise of the slayer herself. It was a very hard season to watch, and caused many long term fans turn away from the show. We, like many were unhappy with the progress this season began, and decided to write our own next season, to address some of the issues that we felt needed righting. This story is the result.

The other chapters can be found HERE, towards the bottom.

Reccers Note: Sadly, this story is unfinished. The duo that is the Rainbow Writers were finally reunited several years ago and have since made a home together, yet struggle with health and real life issues that hinder the creative process. The story does stop at a stable point and is well worth your time. This is arguably my favorite fanfic ever.

I read plenty of light-hearted fare, but that’s not all I love in a fanfic. Some stories involve real-life issues, the struggle to make a relationship work, facing your own shortcomings, or just plain bad timing. Here are a few stand-outs from 2009.

Script for the new Buffy movie! by [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy
Imagine, if you will, a world where both realities of Normal Again coexist. Time passes, and the world has been without its Slayer for 15 years. Imagine what she finds when she is finally released from the mental institution. Imagine Christina Hendricks as a 30-something Buffy! (Hey! I can dream!) PG

Four more hard times... )

There's all flavours of fanfiction, but at this time of year I think sweet treats are classic...I want to offer magic brownies, buttered crumpets, cookie monsters, fancy donuts, and chocolate muffin doll vampires!

here they are )
