Our friends at [livejournal.com profile] seasonal_spuffy are asking for participation in a poll to determine when the community rounds will be open. "We've been thinking that we might be able to save ourselves some work as mods, in a number of obvious and less obvious ways, and maybe even make it easier for all of us to plan our year, if we didn't make that decision anew for each round. The length of the rounds might change as needed, and we'd still have polls about themes and such, but we would always know when the rounds are scheduled to start.

So, if Seasonal Spuffy ran at the same time each spring and fall, what time should it be?"

As October is beginning, Top 5 is usually gearing up to hold its Classic Recs session over the Halloween weekend. Top 5 originally began as an annual challenge for recommendations to fan-created Buffyverse work. Thanks to user input, we expanded this the following year to include Buffyverse recs from any time period during Classic Recs, and later to all other Whedonverse fandoms during Worlds Without Shrimp, held in the first weeks of April.

However, as participation has been declining in numerous Buffyverse communities and challenges on LJ over the past few years, we've seen the same happen with the Top 5 sessions. While we intend to hold the annual session as usual beginning on January 1, we wanted to gauge user interest in holding the various different sessions during this next year.

So we'd appreciate it if our users could please take a minute to answer the following three questions: Read more... )

Back when we were going to open Classic Recs I got a question about whether we might also include recs for Dollhouse. As both Dollhouse and Dr. Horrible are rather limited run series with comparatively small fandoms, it seemed to me that [livejournal.com profile] buffyversetop5 could well provide a home for such recs without significantly changing the nature of the community. Of course, other fandoms have always made an appearance in recs for crossovers, but I think it's safe to say there's a good bit of overlap in fans of various Whedon projects, as well as actors, writers, etc.

So while the question was specifically about Dollhouse, I wanted to ask how people feel about including recs for Whedon projects in general? With a second installment of Dr. Horrible forthcoming next year, as well as various other one-off projects, becoming a general Whedonverse recs community might make more sense than adding some but not all projects.

In this election season I'm asking for your vote! [livejournal.com profile] buffyversetop5 is and always will be about sharing recs, but during this Classic Recs session I think it's probably apparent to everyone that as the fandom gets older, more and more material is disappearing or moving to different online spaces. As a result, a lot of us can't find things anymore.

This situation has always been particularly acute with vids. Something that seemed a solution for hosting problems a few years ago -- streaming sites like YouTube -- have been hit too as many vids disappeared from there in this last year due to copyright sweeps.

So I'd like to know if Top 5 should now also include fic/vid/art/etc. searches in its posts as well as recs. Given the short periods in which the community is open I think the typical spur-of-the-moment fic search isn't a good fit here. But especially during Classic Recs, which is all about sharing the enjoyment of older works, it seems posts that include recs for something the reccer hasn't been able to find would be a good way to get someone coming up with an answer.

How about it? Is this something you would like to see included? We don't have polling capabilities but a quick yes/no (or longer comment) will work.

We've just finished our first week of Top 5 2006 and I would like to ask everyone reading to take a minute and fill out a poll on the community. This will give us a better idea on how it's getting used and how much interest there is in future sessions of Top 5. All poll responses will remain anonymous, though feel free to add any comments about Top 5 or the poll below.
