thenewbuzwuzzI found this gem of a ficlet collection last November while discussing rarepairs in the Elysian Fields shoutbox. I said, "What if there was a *nice* Turok-Han," and boom: Irishrose, who modded the vamp_monologues challenge back in 2004, happened to be right there. She went, "funny you should ask," and linked me to the first item on this rec list. Then I snooped around some of the rest of the comm and had a fantastic time, because minor character POVs and soulless vampires are two of my favorite things.

I just don't understand how it's possible to create so many vids in such a short time AND with such terrific quality. The editing is fantastic, the colours are gorgeous, they're filled with action and/or drama, they let the characters shine... It's simply amazing and I'm totally in awe (and very envious) of 1SnoWhiteQueen1's skills!

Top 5 Works by Restfield
Oct. 30th, 2018 10:33 amdragonyphoenixI tried to avoid rec'ing works that I rec every year but Restfield's Saturday Night vid, music by Bay City Rollers and set during Band Candy, is such a delight that I just can't not share. I adore how it's such a fun vid but then turns poignant in the end. Also, the Mayor turning and leaving on "Gotta Go" just amuses me every time.

Janice's banners are very specific to the individual challenge themes and have a particular theatrical quality to them, a mise en scene suggestive of stage sets. Challenge 22 is moody and atmospheric; 26 and 36's banners are lush, densely layered, evocative of Victorian drawing rooms and vintage photographs gently fading in an attic trunk. I love her fearless use of textures to "degrade" the images in beautiful ways.

Challenge 32's banners are typical of what I think of when I think of Temper's "style" (also typified by her own first place winning icon): warm, soft and inviting glow, muted color palatte. #35's are entirely different; each banner is carefully and precisely coordinanted to the individual icons in terms of colors, and textures so that they seem to be organic extensions of the icons themselves. Manage to be both eye-popping and understated at the same time. The banner forrua1412's first place winner is particularly stunning.

I am color-matching's bitch. No apologies. Deal with it, kids. The background starry chose resembles a watercolor painting in the rain, soaking the paper. "Pastels" are difficult to pull off without being too-sweet but these hit the spot, matched to their respective icons; while a subtle mix of fonts keeps things interesting without pulling focus..

The topic here is poems and fics which draw on something bigger than fandom, weaving Jossverse motifs into wider cultural themes, but never losing sight of the fandom audience. (In other words, they are very, very clever, but also hugely fun for fans).
quinara, Spikeid II and III. Because it's in epic iambic pentameter, and based on the Aeneid, and yet it's accessible, funny, touching and in-voice. They're heroes, dammit. They deserve this poem.
