When websites die, some excellent but not well-distributed fics die with them. Which is why I am SO EXCITED when favorite writers start to put their old stuff up on Archive of Our Own, where it will presumably gain ~~immortality~~ a longer life. In addition, AO3 and some other sites allow for ePub download to reading devices, something that wasn't around when the stories were originally written. Thanks to AO3, Elysian Fields, and The SpuffyRealm for keeping up with new technologies — but especially thanks to the writers who care enough to feed the fic-hungry beast*, even if they aren't active in the fandom anymore.

I apologize for another Spuffy post... (but it's pretty much the only fanfiction I tend to read).

You ever feel like you don't want to invest your time in any new authors, because you don't want to be disappointed? Here are five authors new to Spuffy and the Buffyverse within the last year. All are talented writers who know what grammar is and how to use it, are quite adept at a clever turn of phrase, can plot with the best of them, and keep our heroes and sidekicks the characters we know and love without any blatant character-bashing (not even Angel!). mimesere – All – I haven’t seen many Gunn vids around but I have to admit, after seeing this one I have a hard time imagining someone’s done it better. Just gripping. I think it brings out the separateness and struggle of this character’s arc really well.

If you haven't read Lizerrbeathan's wonderful Spuffy-centric fanfic, you are in for a treat. Liz's unswerving belief in stories-that-heal is evident in all she writes, and her style is insightful and whimsical, lovely and affecting - some of the sweetest, most love-affirming fics you'll ever read.

In no particular order, my faves are:

1. Snow Virgins and its sequel Spike by Snowlight. Begins post-Season 2 and ends twenty-some years later. "I can't imagine Heaven without you" (Buffy, to Spike).

keonkwa has updated this year, including my favourite The Dhampir, which is a real feelgood fic, but does help if you have seen Seasons 1 and 2 of BtVS. No more than PG 13, but I love it. Will not hit any squirks, just a fun read.

Okay....there is just soooo much good fiction out there (old and new) but to narrow it to my top 5 I had to choose the ones that I just keep going back to again and again. These are in my favorites and will remain there, probably forever. Every story is a gem on most of them and all are well worth rereading (many I've printed off and "illustrated" in notebooks to make sure I will always be able to reread them).

Before I list my top 5, I want to first recommend: http://www.allaboutspike.com/ I won't count it though as it is an archive that is no longer updating although the stories already archived remain for your enjoyment. This a one very rich resource indeed.
