Halfway There by [livejournal.com profile] indri - PG-13 – Wonderfully spare account of Giles' journeys to rescue the Potentials in S7. She gives these many near nameless and faceless girls (and the ones who didn't make it) some real meaning, and makes Giles' life's work resonant.

Freedom by [livejournal.com profile] purplefeen:

When Spike grows tired of being beaten down in his relationship with Buffy, he finds solace in a D/s relationship with Willow that blossoms into something that changes both their lives for the better. This is an adult story for adult readers who are looking for something both affecting and erotic. No one writes sexy Spillow better than this lady, and this story is proof.

Longest. Day. Ever. by [livejournal.com profile] shadowscast
http://community.livejournal.com/fall_for_sx/198574.html
Completed, R, post-Him.Spike/Xander. The only way to stop the next doomsday device is to find the right combination on the magic lock. The only way to find it is to send somebody one day back in time after every failed attempt. The only way to check all the combinations is to use somebody who doesn't age - because it takes about 80 years to do it... Wildly inventive premise, tight plotting, a lot of spicy details and absolutely natural and convincing characters' reactions in absolutely impossible situations. Have you ever wondered how Groundhog Day would look from Andie MacDowell's POV? Here's a chance to find out.

(alternate title: 5 of the most fantastic, minimalist, possibly under-appreciated but totally loved Spike/Xander fics this year, that just happen to be by three authors)

1)  Xander Harris vs. Destiny (by [livejournal.com profile] savoytruffle , [livejournal.com profile] cordelianne and [livejournal.com profile] reremouse , mature)

Written for [livejournal.com profile] fall_for_sx , this epic awesomeness is ... in a word... awesome.  Shrunken heads.  Road trips.  Magic.  Bad hotels.  You get the idea.....

the rest, in all their delicate elegance, found here )

On a list of my favorite Spander fics, there is a good representation of stories in which the setting plays as memorable (if not prominant) a role as the boys themselves.

My favorite is Waffle House by [livejournal.com profile] sajinn in which there is a Waffle House, a cozy bungalow and a couple of mansions. It's set in Charleston, which I find very appealing. The setting really becomes a third character in this one.

There are lots of great Giles fics out there and I recommend the [livejournal.com profile] summer_of_giles community as a good place to look for them. The ones behind the cut are five particular favourites of mine.

The Price of Grace by [livejournal.com profile] st_salieri
Post-NFA. 15 chapters so far. Buffy discovers that there is a conspiracy against her and, possibly, all the slayers. She joins forces with Spike, Angel and Faith to find out who's behind it. They travel cross-country, pursued by unknown enemy.

This post is somewhat nostalgic for me because these were the fics I was reading early on in my lurker days before I had an LJ or was writing. Each of these stories are excellent and although they are permanent WIPs, you won't be disappointed with the plots. They range in chapter length from 10-47. Most written during or prior to 2006.

1. A Dying Dream by Europanya ([info]euro_fics)
RATING: NC-17
SETTING: Canon through BtVS, AU for AtS S5
PAIRING: Buffy/Spike
SUMMARY: A decade after closing the Hellmouth and doing time in Hell, Spike is living in San Francisco, a lone vampire in a world nearly wiped clean of demons, when Buffy unexpectedly finds her way back to him. [19 chapters]

Firefly . . . Wonder Falls . . . Birds of Prey . . . You know how frequently TV shows you love are canceled, but that doesn't stop your love for the episodes already filmed? There are fics like that, too.

Here is my list of wonderful WIPs that may never be finished, but I love the chapters that are available.

In putting together this list I realized that part of my problem was that the definition of what qualifies as gen fic wasn’t entirely clear to me. And I’m not sure if my definition will match those of other people, so I thought I’d both list my choices and discuss what makes them gen (to me) at the same time.

(1) AtS: No Limits – Multiple authors – Teen – I’m guessing the classic definition of a gen fic is one that is (a) An ensemble piece (b) that does not focus on a relationship (c) and mimics as closely as possible a canonical episode (if in TV fandom), including restrictions on content (such as detailed sexual description). If that’s the case it seems to me you can’t get more gen than an effort to create a virtual season. Seeing notices for this project pop up after the cancellation of Angel made me feel a teeny bit better. Given how many people are involved I think they’ve done a remarkably good job of maintaining coherence in its storyline, characterization and tone. They really do read like episodes of the show. Also like the show there are better and weaker episodes but it’s been a good season.
