Brave New World by kaydefalls refers to wish!verse where Anya asks "How do you know the other world is any better than this?" and Giles responds "It has to be." This vid asks the question: Is it really better? And the answer's somewhat ambiguous.
You may need to be as old as I am to get The Odd Couple (Giles/Spike). It takes the opening audio track from The Odd Couple tv series and puts it with images of Spike and Giles. Gives a great suggestion of them as opposite guy roommates.
I Belong to You makes a convincing case for a love triangle between Buffy, Angel, and Mr. Gordo (who is played by piglet).
You'd think that playing the robots in Buffy against the song Robot Girlfriend would make for a light-hearted video, but Robot Girlfriend is actually quite poignant at the end.
Transparent: Oh my Goddess. This Willow character study is just amazing.

This is a post-apocalyptic fic about Lorne (still alive) and Fred (long dead). It made me cry.

Mission Accomplished, by Beer_Good_Foamy

Giles, dealing with the aftermath of Buffy's death, and the fact he always knew it was coming.

The Chosen Series, by Snowpuppies

A series of short ficlets, inspired by Mission Accomplished, each featuring a different Watcher.

An AU of the end of season 5, with much grief.

Sad That You Can't Hear by

dragonyphoenix (G, ~500 words). After Jenny's death, Giles talks to her.

The road never travelled; for which we yearn by

kerkevik_2014 (G, 100 words). During the Burning Man Jenny seeks the answers and gets more than she bargained for.

This Isn't A Kingdom by ilovehowyouletmefall (NC-17, ~35 000 words). It's beautifully crafted longfic set in Wishverse, where Rupert Giles and Jenny Calendar unexpectedly find themselves working with a group of students, struggling to hold back the forces of darkness.
Story is a bit dark, as you expect from the wishverse fic, but it's not hoplessly dark.

1) For My Pain, A World of Sighs (Spike/Xander) by

baudown: This is an exquisitely-wrought cold-chill of a tale - an AU where Spike arrives in Sunnydale earlier than we see in canon... and alone. This is the Spike who rained death and destruction in Europe in all his merciless glory and I am awed anew every time I read this story.

How could I let the year go by with celebrating some stories that brought the pain in all the best ways? I couldn't, so here are some beautifully bleak tales to wrap the shiniest silver lining in foggy clouds:

1) Word Association (Buffy/Angel) by

librarian2003: The summary of this reads "Be careful what you wish for" and I hesitate to offer more detail than that for fear of spoiling this tragic ride. Just know that it was written by Jo and that should be enough to get you clicking that link immediately. It's a masterpiece of pain and indifferent cruelty.

Whenever I rec it I get a bunch of people agreeing it's wonderful but I hardly ever see it recced

Spike nodded in agreement. He was just getting used to hearing his name. Whatever had happened earlier in the evening had wiped his memory clean. He didn’t know who he was, and to hear the lot of them talk, he didn’t know what he was, either. In fact, he only knew one thing about himself. Luckily it was a very important thing.

He had a really cool coat.

thismaz: When Valentine's Day arrives, Dru dips her finger in the brew and gives it a stir. The fic starts in 2009 but ends in 2010. One of the best Spander writers out there, her fics always make sense that they can pass for canon in a heartbeat.

West of the Moon, East of the Sun by KnifeEdge – a new writer to our fandom, she took us all by happy surprise with her long, plotty Spuffy fic. Based on a fairytale format, it sucks you in and keeps you coming back for more. She had me at “hello”, or, well, okay, the minute Buffy woke up in that dark room with only a bed and a vampire. If you think that means smutty pwpw fic, you are oh, so very wrong! You can find it here

A Lorne Thing (PG)

Pitch perfect Lorne spills his woes to a sympathetic bartender in season five. Written as if you're the bartender talking to Lorne, its a real treat to read vivicious' Lorne's story. Its set in season five and Lorne's descriptions of Angel's crew is hilarious. It also features a delightfully demonic appearance from Sweet.

My Sword Is My Song (PG-13)

Lorne is a survivor, dramatically dressed and ready with a sea breeze, but always ready to land on his feet. This fic shows in a sad yet understated way how Lorne moves on in post-NFA LA.

Same Time Next Year (Lorne/Fred, G)

A sadden Lorne completes an annual ritual to mourn Fred. This ficlet tugs at your heart strings and shows a vulnerable and romantic side of Lorne.

Lorne's List of No (PG)

Funny list of songs that Lorne never wants to hear again.

Nothing Goes Away (Lorne & Faith, PG-13)

Lorne tries to take care of Faith in New York City in this gritty fic with heart about a slayer and a demon looking to atone for their pasts in the big apple. The point of view is perfectly Faith but Lorne shines as her link to the PTB and confidante.
