Icon guidelines, and some welcome gifts!

As part of our general posting guide, we wanted to address some issues that may come up regarding graphics, particularly icons.

Icon Posting Guidelines

(1) If you are reccing an icon that you use and no longer remember where, specifically, the icon was originally posted, it is ok to use your User Pictures page (i.e. http://www.livejournal.com/allpics.bml?user=[enter your user name here]) as the link.

(2) If you want, you can include the icons themselves in your post. They must be hosted on your own image account (such as http://http://www.imageshack.us/) NOT hotlinked from the creator's site. If a case of hotlinking is reported to us, we will report it to hotlinkers.

(3) If the icon is not one you use, or that you know was posted somewhere for general distribution, but is instead something you've seen someone else using, it is best to contact them first and make sure the icon is shareable. That doesn't mean it can't be included in your post (unless that user objects). However since icons are usually meant to be shareable when posted, you will want to specify that this is an exception.

If you don't have info on who made an icon, you can try posting at whomadethisicon

Our last point concerns acceptable use and is stated primarily for the benefit of those who may be new to the fandom. If you see graphics you like recced in this community, and want to use them for something else (such as a banner for your journal, use on your website, etc.) contact the creator and ask permission. If you are a creator and a plagiarism issue arises, please contact us. We may also submit the case to stop_plagiarism

makd reced this community and I came over to check it out, but could you possibly lose the confetti? It's very distracting when trying to atually read your post, and for those susceptible to migraines it's nausea inducing. Thanks so much.

Thanks for checking us out! And fear not! We planned to discontinue the confetti before posting began as we also felt it would get distracting once there was reading to be done. As the site is mostly for show until next month we thought it gave it a little more life while it's waiting to come on line.

I'm glad you posted about it though in case anyone else worried the confetti would be going full time! We're expecting the site will get a bit of a different look at least once during its six week run but we'll be sure to keep them on the non-nausea side *g*

Is it worth explaining what PWP, RPF, slash exactly means in a post for the newbies? When I was new to the fandom I got very confused at the initials.

I assume you meant this about the tags, but it's a good point in general. Trouble is there may be all sorts of unfamiliar terms, so I think we may point newbies to a fandom glossary in our launch post. Thanks for bringing this up!

I wanted to kind of thank you, and the comm, for being so fantastic over the last couple of years.
It's been such a great source of fun and resources and general fandom love, and so I created a
new layout for the coming year.

huh, that's weird, i have access, but i can't get to the customize page. i'm sorry! I haven't ever seen that before.

but here are quick and easy instructions that should take two seconds:

1. go to "customize" and search for "flexible squares"
2. click the button "apply theme" underneath the third flexible squares layout titled "Blue Gray"
3. at the top left your screen the "current theme" will update. Click the "customize your theme" link
4. click Custom CSS (it's the last option on the left hand column)
5. change all the drop down options to "no"
6. copy and past all of the text from the following link (it's a text document of the code) http://www.cosanostra-swg.org/KateLJ/buffytop5.txt

you're done!

Hmm, I don't think it's just you because I'm not seeing a way to switch to Flexible Squares, for example. There's nothing else available under "Choose a Page Setup" (it looks like LJ has also changed this Customize menu from the last time I adjusted my LJ, it's all different now). Is that the problem you were having too?

ah, you haven't seen the new customize - lj switched everything around.

and no, i didn't have full moderator permission, so i couldn't even get into the customize layout for the comm (all i could do was approve submissions)

i just realized, one thing that i forgot to include in the instructions - you need to be set to layout S2 (it sounds like the journal might be set to S1 styles now? maybe?). To switch to S2, there should be a tab on the customize page that says "visual options", and in the left column there's a link that says "switch to s2"

maybe that might work?

(a little later today i'm going to post to my own journal a walk through of how to upload layouts, just in case you're curious - I'm sure it was something I wasn't explaining properly - it's so hard when things change to find all those little nuts and bolts of lj working together).

lol! a long list, but a great list! and yeah, the good part about the newer custom layouts is that they go up much faster than the old ones, where one had to tinker here and there and everywhere.

Oh suh-weet! The icons you made for us last year disappeared when my journal reverted to basic a few months ago. The code's still there but I guess the Scrapbook gets wiped when that happens. I should reupload them to my Imageshack account but I hadn't remembered they were stored differently than the others.

lady, i just noticed you're changing the colors by hand - you really don't have to do that if you don't want to - copying and pasting the text file into the custom CSS code will take care of the whole thing (and be much faster)

New Question - What hour (GMT) does this round end on Jan 19th?

I'm having a hard time with the time zone conversion tables online. I'm on Eastern Standard Time in the US, and I think there's a 7-hour difference between us, but I can't tell if you are 7 hours ahead or behind me.
