Honest, I was going to try for a 5 fic theme but I was usually one or two fics short. So instead I am going to list five random fics. The only thing they have in common is they all have a slightly different twist and they are not all human AUs. Enjoy!

It's [livejournal.com profile] buffyversetop5 classic recs time again, and to start off my lists this year I wanted to give kudos to authors who can remix - who can take someone else’s story and put a new spin on it, or expand it in an unexpected way. Here are five Remixes that I love.

Walking Higher by Liz Marcs in which Xander visits each of his old friends. This one just kills me and I defy you not to be bawling like a baby by the end. It’s also got a really effective mix of 2nd and 3rd person voice that works beautifully for the narrative. This is a remix of Winter Garden by kirvin.

More remixes right this way )

A couple of years back I did a post of crossovers. I’m a sucker for a well done crossover, and in all these cases you don’t need to know the other fandom for the story to work just fine. Here are five that I really like - BTVS crossed with five separate fandoms.

Thrift by Te and Pares is a crossover with The Sentinel. Blair Sandburg comes to Sunnydale to meet one Rupert Giles, expert in the supernatural. But before he can meet our favourite Watcher he runs into Faith. Let’s say it’s an educational experience for both of them. Be sure to have some tissues ready to mop up the brain tissue dribbling out of your ears.

Cross here for crossovers... )

I did my list of comedy fics that made me giggle in 2016, so here now is a list of five pretty angsty dramatic fics that made me go wow, I wish I’d written that.

First up is [livejournal.com profile] aadler’s There Ought to be Clowns (The Lying Eyes Remix). Buffy makes Xander a ‘no strings’ offer and Xander accepts. Funny how it becomes impossible to say what you really want once you’ve got what you asked for. I really loved the complicated Buffy characterisation in this story – it’s the road not taken, but feels very true to her character. And the use of repetition is an especially effective bell in her brain. Really good stuff.

Drops breadcrumbs to more lovely slices of storytelling… )

Okay, maybe not "we're all mad" but each of these features madness.

1. nwhepcat's Keeper of the Book is new to me so my comments are from my first read - Wow, the tension is amazing. Half-way through and I still don’t know what’s driving Xander. He tried to kill Cordelia. Giles, and in fact the entire Council in London, are missing. I have no idea what’s going to happen. … And I just finished it. Wow. Wow wow wow. Read this. Now.

the rest of the recs are taking one step beyond )

Because I love them.  And they're not all Spander.  But some are.

1. Babylon, by Tabaqui.  Richly detailed, original world.  The language and imagery are beautiful.  This story always gives me a pang.

No overarching theme with these. I just thought they were all wonderful.

Ethan Rayne vs America by [livejournal.com profile] indri. Ethan's time with the Initiative. PG. Anything new by [livejournal.com profile] indri is a treat. This is just superb.

Here are five extraordinary entries from this year's superb round of [livejournal.com profile] iwry_marathon.

1) Swan Song (Buffy/Angel; PG) by [livejournal.com profile] librarian2003: If you haven't discovered Jo's impossibly brilliant stories by now... well, you have missed out. Whether you like the Buffy/Angel pairing or not, this story (like all her others) will leave you breathless with awe and emotion. Also, you'll never think of Swan Lake the same way again.

More Bangel Below )

If you'd like to take a look at the rest of the outstanding stories from this year's IWRY, then go here. You won't regret it. You have no idea how hard it was for me to narrow this list down to five.

First time posting here, so I hope it's done correctly!  The tags won't load when I try to select them.  I don't know if that's a common problem, but I can come back later to try to fix them.

Hourglass by [livejournal.com profile] smells_corrupt
Rating: PG-13/R
These post-NFA drabble-ish-length vignettes from Spike's first week as a Shanshu-d human are absolutely beautiful- realistic, romantic, and with an ending that still makes me go adflkajdlfkjaldk.
"First she reminds him that just because it can’t kill him anymore, the sun can still hurt like hell and maybe it’s not such a good idea to fall asleep shirtless on the balcony. Then she peppers every inch of burned skin with kisses and whispers that the sun lit up his hair like a halo."

[livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni has been one of Buffydom's most prolific and varied authors this year; she's written tons of fics and all sorts of pairings. Here are my five favorites of hers this year (and a bonus). Mostly Buffy-centric, not all angsty despite the icon.

I'm not primarily a Spuffy 'shipper. Or maybe I am. I can't decide. Whatever, many of the stories I enjoyed last year were Spuffy stories, and here are five of them.

And Take My Walking Slow by [livejournal.com profile] snickfic, originally posted on Dreamwidth for [livejournal.com profile] seasonal_spuffy, a post-apocalyptic Spuffy story featuring a Shanshu'd Spike and a broken Buffy. PG-13. Brilliant stuff.

This year's [livejournal.com profile] whichwillow ficathon elicited truly superb fiction from the participating authors, so choosing just five was sort of arbitrary. But these were especially swell by my way of thinking:

1) Equinox (Willow/Angel; PG-13) by [livejournal.com profile] snowpuppies: Yes indeed - Snowy has written her very first Willow/Angel fic and it's a ring-tailed boomer. In a dystopian future, Willow and Angel find themselves on opposite sides but soon meet in the grey middle. What happens between them and how this tale ends are involving and affecting in every way.

Where "long" = "more than one chapter."

1. Better Late Than Never (11 chapters), by [livejournal.com profile] cindergal
post-Intervention
Spike and Buffy head back to the 1970s to retrieve an artifact to help them defeat Glory. Sweet and hopeful and very quietly romantic. Plus: time travel! and Ripper!

Strictly speaking, only four of these are actually set in S4, but the other one is also full of S4 flavor, and all feature the delightful unlikeliness of early-season Spuffy.

1. Achilles Heel, by Elizabeth
A demon curses Spike and Buffy to UST, basically. Eventually, desperate, they decide to resolve that dratted ST! One of the true classics of Spuffydom from before we had more than the barest hint of it in canon.

I love a good post-apocalyptic scenario. I think partly it's the 'extreme circumstances' part, which allows for all sorts of interesting relationships and alliances, not to mention hurt/comfort. Partly it's the whole survival scenario - I love reading about that kind of thing, even though I, personally, want to sleep in my own bed every night. And partly it's just that sometimes I want some Doom and Gloom with my corn flakes, yanno?

Doom! Gloom! Angst! )

These are five fics I associate with the time before I got my LJ in 2003, when the world of Spuffy fanfic was a very different place (or so it seems to me now). They've stuck with me to such an extent that it seems odd people haven't read them and they've probably influenced me more than I realise.

Action/Adventure FTW! )

The Price of Grace by [livejournal.com profile] st_salieri
Post-NFA. 15 chapters so far. Buffy discovers that there is a conspiracy against her and, possibly, all the slayers. She joins forces with Spike, Angel and Faith to find out who's behind it. They travel cross-country, pursued by unknown enemy.

Joss provided us with countless ploys to develop the universe he created: alternate dimensions, slayer dreams and memories, not to mention good old sci-fi technologies and, last but not least, characters worth exploring. Here are 5 stories based on unusual plot bunnies.

Nothing Ventured by [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight
One-shot, NC-17, between Hell Bells and Seeing Red on BtVS and post-Couplet on AtS. Spike visits Angel in LA and talks with him about Buffy without naming her. Angel thinks they're talking about Dru and gives him some advices... Terrific idea and masterful execution: sharp dialogues, minimalist descriptions, spiced with lethal irony. A character-study-cum-tearjerker-par-excellence.
