Just a reminder to everyone that tomorrow is the final day for mixed Classic + 2021 posts. Saturday kicks off our 2021 Flash Forward weekend until we close at midnight UTC on November 2!

Feel It Still by double-dutchess. Just when you think that Buffyverse vids have tapped everything, here's one on Spike (along with Buffy, the most overvidded character) and yet it feels fresh and energized and modern. Read more... )

  1. Forging Bonds: What can I say? I'm a sucker for a story that will make me believe an unusual pairing. This is Tara/Faith and it set in a universe where everyone's either a dom, sub, or switch. Tara's the dom.
  2. Bread: uses bread as a metaphor for Willow and Tara's relationship. It's just so heartwarming and beautiful.
  3. The Lamb: Tara works in a hospice helping people cross over when it's their time. Willow, last of the Scoobies, is brought in as a coma patient.
  4. Sapling: Willow, Faith, and three Jewish holidays.
  5. From Beneath You It Devours: Eee, a crossover with the Carmilla web series!

Happy Halloween folks. We’re now onto the recs for fandom creativity that has happened since last year’s [livejournal.com profile] buffyversetop5. I’ve noticed a lot of great vids this year, so here’s the first of two 2020 vid posts

Welcome to the Jungle by ethereal. This is a beautifully edited Ensemble vid with an emphasis on Buffy for obvious reasons!

Two well-researched products of international collaboration, two stories by people tapping into their own local lore, and a delightful joke oneshot.

(1) A taniwha from New Zealand, in Seek a Desolate Shade by wolf_shadoe a.k.a. Twinkles (Spuffy, NC-17, 23,737 words, complete)
The reason this list exists and the BEST THING EVER, because Twinkles is familiar not only with the folklore but also with its symbolic meanings in existing art and its presence in contemporary everyday life. And there's artwork. And this is thoughtful and magical and epic and fun. [ETA: I did want to mention that Angel is pretty evil in this story. Also, maybe there should be a sadness warning for parts of it... but still very worth reading, I thought.]

We're down to the final hours of our session, and here's one last recs list of 2019 works from me.

Thanksgiving with the Burkles, 2019 by shadowscast. This ficlet is not only a new work from her in the Buffyverse but it's a sequel! (And also perfect for this new month).

Villains by electric_heart. Fun icon of the Troika. Also I quite liked her pairing icons.

Excardiation by beer_good_foamy. "After Buffy runs away from home, Joyce finds herself bringing home a curious flowerpot from the gallery." Well you know that's not going to go well.

Roses Are Red, Angelus Is Blue by thenewbuzzwuzz. A series of scenes tied together with roses, covering up the scent of denial.

Change, Like Sunshine by still_lycoris. "When Wash first joined the crew, he thought Zoe was Mal's lady. He was quite wrong about that." And Mal was quite wrong about it disrupting a smoothly working ship.

This is my last set of recs for this session of [livejournal.com profile] buffyversetop5. Thanks as always to the brilliant mods for hosting this every year, and thank you to everyone who has added wonderful recs, both old and new, to my ‘to read list'. Anyway, on with the motley...

Confidence by Deangerous - nice, believable moment between Cordy and Xander when he tells her about sleeping outside at Christmas.

More randomness this way... )

I love Oz, and when he’s written well, it makes me very happy. Here are five fics that do just that…

No Cold and Heat by [livejournal.com profile] idyll makes me tear up every time I read it because it is so damn beautiful - bleak, and sad with a chink of light in the clouds that makes my heart ache. Oz is rescued and now must find himself. There’s a hint of slash at the end, but really this is a story that’s all about Oz.

More Ozness this way... )

1) All This Has Happened Before by hazellazer. "It was LA, of course. He saw plenty of platinum blonde women in skimpy red dresses, he just didn't usually see them in his office." Super idea for a Dollhouse and BSG crossover.

2) Happy Holidays by sueworld. Photo manip of a holiday clad (and unclad) Buffy and Spike looking quite festive!

3) Drusilla Caged by laurappel. I liked the split human/vamp face and the idea of Dru as one of her birds.

4) Spander Happy Holidays by catvampcrazines. Bet we'd all like a set of shippy Christmas tree baubles!

5) James Masters (Spike) by Jenn Jamison. There's something about the softness of this technique that I quite liked.
rebcake: Spike with "kiss the librarian" mug (btvs spike kiss the librarian)

I love sparkling dialog, but a story without it can feel timeless. Most of these are about Slayers we haven't met before, but are fascinating in their own right. Links are to AO3, when possible.

The Queen, The Soldier by [personal profile] beer_good_foamy (PG, Gen)
Once upon a time, a long long time ago, there was a town. And in the town was a girl, who didn't want to die. The story of a slayer who did things differently when faced with a people-eating giant.

Four more exciting tales, and a bonus! )

Let's squeeze in some more Buffy vid recs.

Camelia1986 - Halloween in Sunnydale: THE Buffy Halloween vid as far as I'm concerned, should be rewatched at least once yearly!

Nicole Anell - White Rabbit: Restless episodic vid, set to Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit. Mesmerizing.

Brad CPU & Milly - Polka Slayer: Buffy overview vid, with polka. Great fun!

Rowena - BtVS abridged William Tell Overture: the Complete Buffy in just a little over 3 minutes.

Jetpack-monkey / Luminosity & Kamil - It's the End of the World As We Know It: remastered version of a true classic.

Five fluffy or/and funny short stories from 2016, arranged from shortest to longest.

Arrival by yeahyeahno. Giles is facing the biggest horror of his life (no kidding, I can relate).

A Slayin' Song Tonight by [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy. Five holiday decorations that can be used to slay vampires, and one vice versa. AKA the Scooby Holiday Meet-Up is about as peaceful as you'd expect.
And can I just say - the Giles' one. *uncontrollable giggling*

LJ coms are exactly that: communities. Places where we come together to share the fandom with people who are on our friends list and people who are not. Without communities, I would not have met a lot of wonderful people on LJ. I want to give a shout out to five +1 communities that brought fandom to our little corner of the world in 2016. (I simply couldn’t limit the list to five, so I’ve added a bonus.) This is also an expression of gratitude to the moderators of all communities who give of their time to create a fandom experience for the rest of us.

[livejournal.com profile] sb_fag_ends
Created in August 2010, this community promotes Spike/Buffy fanfic and meta up to 1,000 words in length (as well as limited postings of artwork). It's a great concept, especially for those of us who really enjoy the opportunity to participate in brief spurts. The community is moderated by [livejournal.com profile] bogwitch, [livejournal.com profile] quinara, and [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight. I have to say their annual Halloween challenge has been one of the highlights of my fandom year. As of the end of 2016, the community will sadly no longer have active mods, but it remains open for anyone who wants to showcase their work. Thank you for your contribution to the fandom!

Five favorite scary stories. Just keep in mind that some of these go with major character death warning. Won't tell which ones, because I'm evil like that. And because spoilers.

Truly and Forever by [livejournal.com profile] thuviaptarth. What if Willow managed to resurrect Tara? Rated NC-17, and not exactly for the smut.

I'm a big fan of fics where a well-timed spell, a friend stepping in to help, or someone asking the right question at the right time can solve a problem from canon.

Here are five short classic fics in that category:

1. Apotheosis by Ephemeral Night (Willow/Tara, General Audiences). Willow stumbles upon the secret for carrying out the Thy Will Be Done Spell in a more effective manner, and comes up with some clever and audacious to eliminate nearly every threat the Scooby Gang will ever face, and then takes it even further into the ultimate fix-it fic territory. Tagged as "fluff and crack" in AO3, and it's high quality fluff and crack.

And another spangel rec list, this time it's comedy/fluff. Because one list was clearly not enough.

This Is It by Foxinator ([livejournal.com profile] foxstarreh). Spike and Angel move on. Maybe. Kinda. PG-13.

Sad That You Can't Hear by [livejournal.com profile] dragonyphoenix (G, ~500 words). After Jenny's death, Giles talks to her.

The road never travelled; for which we yearn by [livejournal.com profile] kerkevik_2014 (G, 100 words). During the Burning Man Jenny seeks the answers and gets more than she bargained for.

This Isn't A Kingdom by ilovehowyouletmefall (NC-17, ~35 000 words). It's beautifully crafted longfic set in Wishverse, where Rupert Giles and Jenny Calendar unexpectedly find themselves working with a group of students, struggling to hold back the forces of darkness.
Story is a bit dark, as you expect from the wishverse fic, but it's not hoplessly dark.

And some fanart:

I love seasonal coms, don’t you? It gives everyone a reason to show off their best work. Here are five of my favorite seasonal com posts in 2015:

Lies My Lover Told Me
fiction posted by [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight at [livejournal.com profile] summer_of_giles
Post-Chosen, Giles and Olivia meet and talk about then and now. The conversation goes in a direction that is not what Giles expected. As usual with shapinglight’s work, the characters are realistic and the dialogue is searing and brilliant.

The [livejournal.com profile] sb_fag_ends Halloween Challenge happens in the last week of October. Participating writers compete to fill the most prompts with short Spuffy stories of 1,000 words or less. It’s actually more complicated, but I can never figure out the rules. The important thing is the results. Whimsical, eclectic and comedic themes expertly written. One of the most fun fandom events of the year. Here are just a few of my favorites:

Party Hard
by [livejournal.com profile] drizzlydaze
On Buffy’s 16th birthday, one week after she’s first told she’s the slayer, she meets Spike.

Since people seemed quite taken with the first set here are five more, probably better known than the first set.

Living History by LizMarcs
Rating: PG, Worksafe
Some people have come from a place far, far away and a time far, far ahead to ask for help on an urgent matter. The time they were aiming for? February 2008. The place? Moscow. The problem? Somehow they've ended up in Cleveland, September 2003. And that’s just the beginning of the trouble; they seem to be descendants of the Scoobies and are determined not to change the past... but they haven't reckoned with Xander. Superbly written with a fascinating plot, some of the most beautifully crafted OCs I've ever seen and a wonderful portrayal of Xander and Faith. Very highly recommended!

Five non-scary (and mostly non-dark) stories for the Halloween. Arranged from shortest to longest (though even the longest one is just about 1800 words.)

C'tea for Cthulhu by [livejournal.com profile] lostboy_lj. Buffy, Spike, PG-13.
Buffy and Spike encounter Cthulhu and things don't go as you expect them, though everyone acts perfectly in character (including Cthulhu).

Five random fics from 2014 that have no real connection other than that they stayed in my head after I'd read them...

[livejournal.com profile] baudown has been a very welcome addition to our fandom over the last few years. She has a wonderful command of character and language and a new story from her always makes my day. Basement, 1999 is a lovely slice of Spike, Xander pre-slash in which Spike realises that just because he has a chip doesn’t mean he can’t torture Xander just a little. I really wish she’d write more in this ‘verse.

I've come across some great BTVS & Angel fanvids over the years and this year has been no exception for some great videos. It's hard to chose just 5.

My top 5 include:
Spike/darkwillow
Angelus/Willow
Spike alone
Giles/Drusilla
Team Angel (season 5) Mostly features Spike.

After last year's Top 5, I decided I'd keep track of stories I liked so I'd have tons of choices when making my list. I October, when I was going through my list of fanfic faves, I found I had enough for one set of five stories written in 2015. Since then I've come up with another seven. I have to conclude I could have been paying better attention in the earlier part of 2014. For example, I just reread aadler's Maxima Culpa, and that totally would have been on my rec list if I'd been paying more attention.

1) Rahirah's Black Friday. I personally can't imagine shopping on Black Friday but Spike and Buffy do seem made for it.

The other four stories have a hand raised and are calling out "Oh, oh, Mr. Kotter. Mr. Kotter." )

My last list, which I'm doing now because I may be away this weekend.

Five fannish things I really enjoyed in 2013, in no particular order.

First, some wonderful meta from [livejournal.com profile] lostboy_lj, The Monomythology of Buffy. Buffy on Campbell's 'classic' hero's journey, all explained in pretty pictures. Brilliant!

[livejournal.com profile] sueworld2003 contributes awe-inspiring art to the community, sets a standard of excellence for the rest of us, and always has an encouraging comment for other would-be manippers.

Here are 5 works by [livejournal.com profile] sueworld2003 that I think are a good representation of her art. I have written my thoughts about the each piece (and hopefully I am not too far off from the artist’s intent). You can see much more of her beautiful work at her flickr site here.

Always Young (Worksafe)

I am affected as soon as I open this piece. I can sense the stillness of the woods and the chill in the air. I could look at this one for hours and continue to marvel at the choices in composition, color, and blending. How did she know to place each branch so perfectly or to choose just the right shade? The way she uses the space takes my breath away. It's easy to get lost in this one.

For Halloween!

It was difficult to narrow it down to five.  Also, it made me realize that Willow is very often the star player when it comes to scary tales.  Hope there are some on this list that you haven't read.

1. Here Comes a Candle , by wiseacress.  Spike asks for a favor...on Halloween.  The ultimate in creepy.

I loved these stories, but I’m having trouble finding a unifying theme. Some are funny, though not always. They are gen-ish, but not entirely. They kinda, sorta explore art, poetry, and literature, but that’s not the main thrust behind them. What they all are is worth reading!

Some writers just kept on bringing the good stuff in 2012, and [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni is one of the chief among them. Whether long or short, her work is always varied and wonderful. Here are five of my favourites of her short fics. The first one, I only read for the first time a minute ago.

Ca Ira. Pre-series, set in the heady (or should that be headless?) days of the French Revolution, and featuring an OC Slayer and her lover, both with a way with words. PG-13. Written for [livejournal.com profile] femslash_minis.
