[community profile] summer_of_giles is always a highlight of my fandom year, both as a writer and a consumer. Here are five fics that really jumped out at me, but with the caveat that as always there is a ton of great stuff that is worth checking out and I'm still way behind with my reading! The SoG DW account has very user friendly tags if you want to go delving back into the archive for goodies from previous years. SoG also has an AO3 account, so that’s another way to get your Giles on.

The Call by pbjellius is a lovely glimpse of pre-Sunnydale Giles who is doing mindless busywork for the Council and dreaming something bigger. And really, if you were a vampire, you don’t want to get between a having a bad day Giles and the pub - just saying!

Five favorite Buffyverse stories, in no particular order :

1. OK, technically this isn't really a story however... The Art Project by [personal profile] st_salieri.

2. Flight to Egypt , Spike by [profile] powerofthebook.

3. Conundrum , William/Drusilla by [personal profile] rebcake.

4. 14 Forever , Random Slayer by [personal profile] perletwo

5. Nightswimming , Spike/Buffy by [profile] calove.

And while I'm at it let me put in a shout out for the very much missed, Open on Sunday , a source for many of the best Buffyverse works.

Let's wrack up those negative emotions, shall we?

1. Twelfth Sister: The Council's always known kill one Slayer you get a new one, but now they realize they can kill one Slayer and revive her. It's so dark but so beautifully written. I just love this story. Here's a snippet: "Because, gentleman," he replied, his voice now tinged with a hint of acid, "why should we simply settle for another Kendra? Why should we settle for just one, when we could have a dozen? When we could have a hundred?"

2. Falling Like Icarus: Oh, this is so sad. I don't want to give anything away so I'll just say Xander/Anya and share the summary: She'd come so close to the sun, to joy, but now her wings are melting and she's falling, like Icarus. Xander and Anya's world is shattered with just one word.

3. Extinction: A drabble from Open on Sunday. I'm not sure anything I say here could do it justice. Powerful.

4. Mission Accomplished: Poignant. The unexpected difficulty of a Watcher's last duty to his Slayer. I adore the juxtaposition of the explanation of this terrible duty in Watcher training vs. the reality of having to face it.

5. Blackout: A dying Xander brings his daughter to Spike and Angel. Every time I read this - every time - I cry at the end. This story takes a tragic even and makes it heartwarming.

1) Fiction Banners by teragramm. I don't tend to see these very often anymore unless a Big Bang fic is involved. I liked the sleek yet different look in these two works.

2) And I Won't Feel a Thing (The Rinse and Repeat Remix) by SegaBarrett. " Billy has everything he ever wanted." I like the fact that Billy having what he wanted doesn't change who he is, it's just the same steps to different music.

3) Vantage Point (Remix of Heights) by Corina (CorinaLannister). "Spike and Willow go on patrol together with Spike being the powerhouse fighter and Willow helping him out with her telepathic abilities. But who is helping who really?" I read this together with the original story (written last year) and found that it was the final lines in both the original and remix that stuck with me. Spike and Buffy as Heathcliff and Catherine is a little off to me, Angel being rather more Heathcliff-y. But then that says so much about Willow's frame of mind, she should know that. Spike reminds her, but she does tend to forget it.

4) Restoration by circular_infinity. Buffy & Angel's missing scene after her return. Part of what struck me about this story was the way Angel thinks of her with an artist's eye as he sees her again, "Part of her demeanor speaks of grief. It eases as she nears him, but it's still there like a layer of priming on a canvas."

5) Junior Deviants by Aadler. "Not everything fell apart in the last days of Sunnydale. Some things came together." First off, hardly anyone remembers or writes about Dawn's friends in early S7, especially since the show didn't either after the spinoff idea went nowhere. And this one has a nice surprise at the end. Second, so happy to see drabbles on AO3 since very few of them end up there!

Lastly, I didn't include this in my list because it's commercial not fannish – which in itself has become a harder thing to tease apart in these last 15 years given people's platforms on YouTube and fannish news outlets, Patreon and even commercializing individual websites. But I did find the concept of this quite entertaining: I've Never Seen "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" So I Watched The Pilot And Finale And Nothing In Between

[livejournal.com profile] summer_of_giles is a lovely sandbox to play in every year and to enjoy some wonderful creativity. Here are five fics from SoG I enjoyed this year. (There's a lot more there than just these five, so go over to the comm and have an amble through all the great work.)

The Mirror Broke (But All My Friends Were Laughing) by 23Murasaki. I’m a sucker for a well written AU and this one is lovely. Randall lives post Eyghon and Giles’ life takes a different turn. This is excellently done.

1. Mocktober Madness first-line-last-line challenge drabbles on @giles-shorts by @littleotter73 and @il_mio_capitano
I was happy to see this comm come to life - and with such a neat game.
One of my favorites: Apologies by @littleotter73 (Giles and his Citroën, FRC - Fan Rated for Children)

2. The Big Moments by jjscm (45 different BtVS and AtS characters and counting, G)
A great reminder of how many interesting people inhabit the Buffyverse. <3 I'm increasingly in awe as jjscm gets into more and more obscure characters. And you can request your fave in the comments! :)
One of my favorites: Wood (Robin Wood, Nikki Wood, G)

Quite a while back I decided one of my Top 5 lists would be stories rec'd on Indri's site which is where I ran across Donna the Vampire Slayer, a crossover with The West Wing. Listening to The Sunnydale Fanfic Club, a podcast that discusses fanfic with the authors, I heard that Beer Good Foamy has a West Wing crossover, Miss Summers Goes to Washington. And thus the BtVS / West Wing crossover rec list was born.

Sticks head above the parapet...I'm not around much the next couple of weeks, so I'm going to front-load my entries, so apologies for the spamming.

A lot of my reading this year came from [livejournal.com profile] summer_of_giles. One of the days was an open call for drabbles, using the last line of the last drabble as the first line of the next drabble challenge. They were all great fun, but here are five that really caught my eye.

Last year in the classic recs season I challenged myself to rec some non-Xander related fics, since it’s well known where my fic preferences lie. Here’s what I came up this year for the same self-challenge.

If you want a demonstration of how to create humour in the midst of angst and keep it to 100 words, then look no further than Substitute by [livejournal.com profile] speakr2customrs and [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy. Dawn’s up on Glory’s tower, so I really shouldn’t be giggling - right...

1. What I look for in any story is the emotion. Solshine's The Letters has that in spades as it reviews Buffy's evolving reaction to Spike's letters. The story also has incredible details: the unexpected elegance of Spike's script, the inelegant sealing wax as if he's defending himself against the emotions expressed in his letters.

2. The Scooby's watch over Giles the summer after he's tortured by Angelus in Gilescandy's The Watcher's Watch Diary '98. I adore how the kids stand together to support Giles when he needs them, even when he isn't willing to admit he needs/wants help!, and how each character's personality shines through in their entries.

3. deird1 does an amazing job of juxtaposing humor with guilt and grief in The Very Secret Diary of Andrew Wells. Andrew's personality shines through and his journal comments, such as listing an ongoing debate over the prowess of Batman vs. Spiderman as strategy discussions and morale boosters, provide a humorous background against the growing realization that something's not just right with the upcoming battle.

4. Eee! il_mio_capitano's Distractions might be only a drabble but it is brill. I don't know what to say without giving too much away so go, read, and enjoy!

5. And I know this isn't generally done, but the whole idea for this rec list came from me wanting to rec my story The Letters (the 84, Charing Cross Road remix) in which we see Anya and Severus Snape's relationship through a series of letters, e-mails, and wedding invitations.

I'm a fan of the [livejournal.com profile] giles_shorts community, especially the "first line last line" challenge, where the last line from someone else's drabble becomes your first sentence. It takes a lot of discipline, something our favorite Watcher would surely have approved.

For your divertion, may I present five drabbles inspired by prompts from Giles-shorts:

I’ve said many times before, but it bears repeating that I love [livejournal.com profile] baudown’s ability to tell a big story so economically. What Gives is a series of drabbles in which Xander tends to Spike’s injuries and Spike allows himself to be tended to.

God knows we needed to get our laughs where we could last year, so here are five ficlets from 2016 that made me giggle

To kick off, try a perfect Giles, Spike drabble from [livejournal.com profile] il_mio_capitano. Spike might just be a little bit obsessed with Buffy. No wonder Giles needs Something Stronger.

Open on Sunday hasn’t had a post since July. As a memorial, I found five great - I went through a bunch but I didn’t read them all -  drabbles written for an Open on Sunday prompt.

1. [livejournal.com profile] punch_kicker15’s If You Are What You Say You Are because I’m a sucker for a happy ending.

2. [livejournal.com profile] romanyg’s Woman of Property because I’m also a sucker for angst

3. [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy’s Advant Gardener because no one writes humor like Beer Good Foamy

4. [livejournal.com profile] baudown’s Parlour Games because awesome Spander

5. [livejournal.com profile] nihilistbear’s Kiss from “Once More With Feeling” because ouch!

And while I’m here, the first prompt since April has recently been posted at Giles Shorts. Go. Write.
[identity profile] dragonyphoenix.livejournal.com
The Prompt: Write about changes in relationships (friend to enemy or vice versa), or introduce characters that have never met, or something else that fits the theme.

Party Demons by [livejournal.com profile] kantayra - The world might be ending but at least Clem’s made a new friend. Hee!

Sleeping Arrangements by [livejournal.com profile] gwynnega - given that they're drabbles, it can be hard to describe the story without ruining the surprise

Unconventional by [livejournal.com profile] glassslipper - ditto

All in the Retelling by [livejournal.com profile] xmirax - rescuing the world from Angelus as told by one who lived to tell the tale

Hubris by [livejournal.com profile] knotted_rose - I don’t want to ruin the surprise. Angel story.

Edited on 30 Oct to include author names,
[identity profile] dragonyphoenix.livejournal.com
1. Brace Yourself by Enigmatic Blue. Spike / Buffy. A rewrite  of season 6 where Buffy more easily accepts her attraction to Spike. A ritual to free Spike of a curse has unexpected consequences. And, given this category, I’m pretty sure you know what those consequences are. *grin*

the rest of the recs listened to sappy 80s love songs and are balling their eyes out )

In 2014 I wrote The Perfect Cup of Tea and I learned that Brits really don’t like it when you get tea making wrong. Note: I have since corrected my mistake and promise to never, ever do anything so heinous to tea, even if only in a story, again.

1. Gill O’s Tea Parties Suck, was written as a response to my story. I like to think my error, in that it produced such a delightfully humorous response, was almost worth making.
the rest of the recs are having a cup of tea and then having another one. Because they're small. )

I became inspired by [livejournal.com profile] red_satin_doll's classic recs wishlist. Among other things, she asked for rare pairs, Mr. Gordo, stories that explore the POV of voiceless victims, and overlooked characters. Some of these stories do double, or even triple duty!

1. Little Red Riding Hood, by Circe -- This is a rare pair, and an overlooked character, and it's from the POV of a voiceless victim. And it's fantastic. Spike/Janice

2. Stars and Crosses, by Emelye -- This is definitely a rare pair; it fits in another wished for category as well, but I'm not saying more -- there's a surprise, and it made me grin from ear to ear when I first read it.

3. Untitled ficlet, by Anna S -- This one explains itself: Spike/Lorne (the ficlet is in the second half of the linked post)

4. The Wall Series, be Debechan,Teland, and TheSpike -- Xander/Ethan -- this qualifies as a rare pair, right? Dark and dirty.

5. Domestic Bliss, by nomelon -- Spike/Riley, which I think qualifies as a rare pair, too. This is a must-read, even if you think this pairing is a non-starter for you (as it was for me, until I read it, and then WOW). It's original and captivating and emotional and hot. Trust me on this one.

Distractions by [livejournal.com profile] il_mio_capitano (Giles, Xander, PG). A library horror drabble that could really give you chills.

Caster Sugar first part and second: I'd requested a story - Spike eating the Band Candy - that thisficklemob had been thinking on for years. Spike reverts to William, which does make sense now that I think on it. It's delightful.

Gabrielle's Answering Prayers: Joyce and Angel's relationship in the summer between seasons 2 and 3. It's brilliant.

Il Mio Capitano's Double Dipping: One of three recs for stories set in "Band Candy". (The others are Caster Sugar and the Saturday NIght vid.) Ripper and Joyce don't go as quietly as Buffy thinks.

Punch Kicker's If You Are What You Say You Are: Okay, I adore this because Joyce is saved. What can I say? I like Joyce.

FeliciaCraft's Lust at First Sight: Giles falls.

I've already focused on some of [livejournal.com profile] kwritten's Buffy/Tara fics in my last rec post; here's more by various authors focusing on Tara herself rather than as half of a ship:

The Real You by [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni (Tara, Dawn, mentions of Buffy and ensemble, S5-S6?); for [livejournal.com profile] eilowyn: Tara spends some time, that summer, trying to work out when Dawn became. Too few fics explore Tara's relationship with Dawn but also Tara's skill as a witch in her own right. This fills a need; satisfying and poignant.

Filling Holes by [livejournal.com profile] foxstarreh (Tara, implied W/T, canon-compliant S6, post-Once More With Feeling) There's this hole in her head.

Her Own also by [livejournal.com profile] foxstarreh (Tara, implied W/T, canon-compliant S6, between Tabula Rasa and Smashed.) Tara moves out of Revello and back to campus. Some of Tara's things are Willow's and she leaves those behind. Both of Fox's drabbles are incredibly haunting.

The Things You Find in Vending Machines by the ininimitable [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip (Tara, Buffy, canon-compliant S4, post-New Moon Rising). This was written as a gift to me in return for the banner I'd made for her amazing fic "Soft and Pink and Very Sad"  ; a deleted scene that reminds me how hungry I am for more Buffy and Tara friendship scenes. Oh great. Not only is Buffy officially a dork, but Tara looks like a deer caught in the headlights, so now Buffy feels guilty… and still wigged out.

Eagles on the Wind by [livejournal.com profile] kerkevik_2014 (Tara/ Faith, post-series) Another gift for me; sly, sensual, confident Tara taking the lead with a Slayer whose cocky attitude doesn't mask her nerves or her fear of intimacy? YES, PLEASE.
"Aren't we gonna screw?"   /
Tara tutted at Faith; slowly undoing the buttons on her new wife's dress.

Fics that surprised me with some unusual take on the pairing.
Any bad English in summaries is mine and shouldn't be blamed on fic authors.

Spurred on by [livejournal.com profile] red_satin_doll here are five classic Spangel stories that I particularly love. (Someone already recced Friday, or that would have been top of the list, obviously. Also I don't have anything by Kita - sorry!) Have tried to list the fics as they happen within the shows' timeline.

1. Nothing Else Matters by [livejournal.com profile] estepheia. Summary: Having been beaten up by Buffy [in Dead Things] Spike drives to L.A. (This was the fic that brought me on board the Spike/Angel slash train. It is amazing and very hot.)

2. Lament for the Dead by [livejournal.com profile] stir_of_echoes. Summary: Nothing worth doing is completed in our lifetime/Therefore, we are saved by hope [...] (Post-Destiny. If you take 'that one time' literally, this could be it.)

3. His Body A Boat by [livejournal.com profile] romanyg. Summary: Some sex, some violence. Wha'd'ya want? It's S/A. (If you want 'classic' you can't get more classic than this. Absolute, pared-down perfection.)

4. Vicarious (redux) by [livejournal.com profile] lynnenne. Summary: Spike and Angel share their memories of Buffy. In bed. (Set post-TGiQ. The perfect coda.)

5. Desert Pixies Made Us Do It by [livejournal.com profile] nomelon. Summary: Angel and Spike in the desert. Stuff happens. (Could be post-NFA. Also, the summary doesn't do it justice - this is quite simply one of the funniest fics in existence!)
[identity profile] lusciousxander.livejournal.com
1) Cousins to the War by [livejournal.com profile] jo_anne_storm: Okay, I've never watched Teen Wolf but I heard a lot about the similarities between Xander and Stiles and got curious. I don't regret a second of it. I'm glad that it's Stiles visiting Xander instead of the other way around. I'm also glad that Stiles is Xander's cousin and not his lover.
