These are ones I had to rec as I love them so but didn't fit into any categories. And please pardon my lack of "why this is so great" comments. Other people can write whole paragraphs on that topic. Me? I'm more along the lines of "I really like it."

Ten Things That Never Happened in the Buffy FandomThe spell that created Dawn didn’t effect just the tv show.
Mr Spike: Spike’s visits to the children’s ward of the hospital.
Business as Usual: From the summary: What if Spike had been telling the truth when he made his sarcastic remark about visiting a nice tea-room at the garbage dump during Season 5’s The Replacement? Eeee! I adore Agnes Pringle.
Magpie: Strange deaths and Xander is somehow a focus. The writing is incredibly beautiful.
Radio Silence From the summary: The Gentlemen drop by Night Vale. This poses something of a problem for a radio host who depends on his voice to communicate. Beer good foamy always writes excellent stories.

Ten Things That Never Happened in the BtVS Fandom by Booster
Summary: Some spells are stronger and further reaching than you’d think. What if Dawn had been around for a lot longer than you remember....?
My reason for the rec: A lovely bit of metafiction (in a way) in which Dawn's origin is even stranger than we thought.

Just One Night by Vogonguard
Summary: A careless use of the W-word and the Scoobies from Chosen meet the Scoobies from Prophecy Girl.
My reason for the rec: Not exactly a do-over, but a nice story about time travel and the evolution of most of the BtVS characters

The Multiverse by Hotpoint
Summary: Serenity falls through a rip in the continuum and Mal meets a very familiar face on the other side
My reason for the rec: This one's just fun, a head-on crash between the Serenity crew and the Buffyverse.

Dawn's Fine by Abra
Summary: Dawn Summers goes to college in Metropolis. When she notices that her History professor, Milton Fine, looks just like Spike, she can't stay away. Prof. Fine has his own agenda to go along with her crush.
My reason for the rec: It's one of the better Buffy / Smallville crossovers, and plays fair with both fandoms.

Dojo Hard by Speakertocustomers
Summary: The Buffyverse characters dwell in 17th century Japan. Gilbert and Sullivan meets Samurai movies meets - Paddington Bear? Parody, bad haiku, and martial arts in something loosely resembling BtVS S2. Very loosely.
My reason for the rec: It's immense fun and VERY silly.

Some favorite gen short stories from 2014 (and the hardest part here was to chose just 5).
Any bad English in summaries is mine and shouldn't be blamed on fic authors.

Building Character by [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy (Ensemble, PG-13). Unusual version of "Buffy came back wrong" and at the same time - genial meta-story about writing fanfiction. In order to fix Buffy scoobies are "rewriting" her backstory.

Strangers by [livejournal.com profile] lusciousxander
http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=lusciousxander&keyword=Strangers+%28Buffy/Spike%29&filter=all
~ 83,000 words. PG. Starts in the eighth season of BtVS, in February 2005. Buffy, Xander and their Slayers are living in a castle in Scotland. Grief pushes Buffy and Xander to do something really stupid: they have consolation sex, Buffy ends up pregnant and eventually gives birth to a girl. Things get more complicated when she discovers that Spike is no longer dead. Earnest, detailed exploration of Buffy's dilemmas in season 8, this story is simultaneously epic and intimate.

snickfic: Buffy Dawn weird love is better than no love (Buffy Dawn)
[personal profile] snickfic
None very long, but all gen and all lovely looks at Dawn.

1. Old Year's Eve, by [livejournal.com profile] st_salieri
S6
Dawn makes a discovery about Spike and Buffy and another discovery about herself. This is Dawn-growing-up fic, beautifully written and with the sense of weight and melancholy growing up brings.

1)  Everything Changes ([livejournal.com profile] starshine24mc , crossover with Torchwood, Giles/Jack Harkness, PG13)

Absolutely stunning little fic that goes with a lovely premise that Giles and Jack would totally run into each other in a dark alley one night.  You don't really have to know Torchwood to read this, just know that while the Btvs verse is about monsters, the Torchwood verse is all about aliens instead.

narrowing down to five was *much* harder than i thought it was going to be )

Thriller by [livejournal.com profile] buffyanne - All – Really, what song could be better for the horror side of the Buffyverse? Even better (for some of us) buffyanne skillfully weaves together both Buffy and Supernatural here, making this an awesome recruiter vid. And the narrator? Genius.

Some Enchanted Evening by [livejournal.com profile] speakr2customrs
PG, During "All the Way", the Trio decided to repeat Ethan Rayne's trick with enchanted costumes. The result was quite unexpected... A brilliant and funny re-imagination of BtVS mythology; a smart culturological essay on the BtVS influences and roots; seemingly fluffy "what if" that reflects on notion of a hero and ponders how thin the line between heroes and villains is. The idea behind Andrew's transformation is particularly inspired. A must.

Dawn is a great character *as well as* a great plot device. She's a teenager, hence, pretty inpredictable. She's a Key, so she can have unusual hidden powers. She's a creative person - ergo, she can indulge in unexpected hobbies. She's a Slayer's sister, literally made from Buffy - so she can be self-sacrificing, petty, courageous, bossy, sweet...

Dawn of the Dead by [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy
Ensemble, PG-13. What if Dawn had been vamped in All the Way? First of all, it would be incredible fun. Second, it's a chance to reimagine BtVS and AtS mythology. Thirdly, such plot twist gives us a fresh look at moral dilemmas in Buffyverse. Four: the story is written in drabbles and practically each drabble delves into a situation worthy of a separate fic. Dense, compact and, may I repeat again - uproariously funny!

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is a post-modernist show. "Dawn's in trouble - must be Tuesday", Buffy says in "Once More With Feeling", referring to the BtVS time slot. Canonical post-modernism echoes in fanfiction, where the fourth wall is even more blurry.

Ipso Facto by Jenny
NC-17. Spike and Angel discover joys of slash fanfiction.

Sunshine by [livejournal.com profile] shadowscast
Part 1, part 2
Future Fic, NC-17.
Two tunnels diverged in a grimy subway.
And I, I don’t know which one the demon went down.
Well, shit.

- Xander Harris, with props to Robert Frost
Thirteen years after Spike had mysteriously disappeared, Xander meets him by accident in the London underground. Where has Spike been all this time, and what is he hiding? In my (highly subjective) opinion, [livejournal.com profile] shadowscast writes the best Xander ever; seeing her writing again after a year of absence was a great joy. In her new story she introduces a simple and effective plot device I never encountered before - a potion that allows vampires to walk in the sunlight for a brief period of time - and she ingeniously exploits the idea on both narrative and metaphorical levels.

Let's put the discussions aside for a moment and just enjoy what some fans have written, inspired by the new comic books – whether irreverently funny or dark and painful.

Netherlands to Nepal by [livejournal.com profile] stormwreath. Possibly the least sexy explicit femslash story ever written – and that's a compliment. Willow finds a way to help Dawn, but it involves getting naked and when your lover is 50 feet tall, there are certain... complications. Hilarious ones. (Willow/Dawn, NC17)
