Being something of an expert on bad days lately, and wanting to contribute to this fabulous community, I decided I would share five stories I always go back and read when I am feeling down. Now those of you who know me don't need the following explanation, but for those who don't... no, these stories will not all be schmoopy fluff. I'm not known as the Queen of Angst for nothing and sometimes what makes me feel better is really, really angsty or even dark!fic. Read on... if you dare:

1) Red Frame, White Light by

sparrow2000: Dark, creepy, and so exquisitely-crafted that it's like a blood red diamond. What is it about? Xander's visit to a 7-11 is anything but a well-lit fest of overpriced snack food. Other than that, all you need to know is that Sparrow does that voodoo that she do so well.

I love how interactive and community-oriented it is, and I love getting writing advice and story trivia from some of my favorite authors, hearing about the experiences of other fans, and discovering bits of fandom history. 1. Sweet William, by Peasant -- The early days of William and the Fanged Four. One of my favorite buffyverse fics, historical or otherwise.

2. A Winter's Tale, by Coquette -- The Fanged Four on a Northern journey. Beautiful writing, engrossing plot.

3. Delight Becomes Pictorial, by glossiolalia -- William/Angelus. Dark, hot.

4. Many Loves, by Anonymous -- The loves of William (and Spike), from turning until after The Gift.

5. Thicker Than Water, by Tara R. -- Shanghai, 1900. An encounter between Angelus and William. Or is it Angel and Spike?

Five fics that will get under your skin:

1. The Loving Dead, by witling -- Xander is being haunted. Is it ghosts, or ghosts of the past? Eerie, atmospheric, and a little bit heartbreaking. A beautifully rendered Xander.

2. Macrame, by Anna S -- Willow overuses magic. Magic has consequences. As always, the writing is extraordinary. Spander.

3. Skin Deep, by Doyle -- A short and very scary season 7 AU. Yikes.

4. Cuckoo in the Nest, by liz marks -- A character study of Tony Harris, an all-too human monster. This will hit you like a punch to the gut. This one stuck with me for a long, long time.

5. Red Frame, White Light, by sparrow2000 -- Post-soul Spike's craziness takes a slightly different form. His encounter with Xander is shivery perfection.

aadler - What can I say about this? It's brutal and yet somehow delicate, poetic yet gritty, and absolutely heartbreakingly perfect. This post-apocalyptic take on The Gift (a remix of

How could I let the year go by with celebrating some stories that brought the pain in all the best ways? I couldn't, so here are some beautifully bleak tales to wrap the shiniest silver lining in foggy clouds:

1) Word Association (Buffy/Angel) by

librarian2003: The summary of this reads "Be careful what you wish for" and I hesitate to offer more detail than that for fear of spoiling this tragic ride. Just know that it was written by Jo and that should be enough to get you clicking that link immediately. It's a masterpiece of pain and indifferent cruelty.

No surprise, I suppose, that Willow fics are the subject of my list, but it's still worth doing. These are five fics which I feel represent some of the best stories written about Willow Rosenberg - or any character - in 2013.

1) Less and More Than Friends (Willow/Angel) by

lilbreck: First of all, the writing is gorgeous - exquisitely opaque and delicate. Second, the story is dark at times, but in a quiet, insidiously creepy way that gets under your skin like a cold chill. Third... well, read it for yourself and you'll see everything I love about it and that you'll love too.

Fics I loved which I haven't seen recc'ed yet, but oh, for a linking theme... it's mainly Giles in a number of guises, but one Darla-fic sneaked in. My favourite characters being written well, in relationships of varying states of happiness and snark: a joy.

wesleysgirl, Life is What Happens When You're Making Other Plans, very, very sweet human AU, Giles/Wesley in their cautious, repressed selves. Not a vampire in sight, but a great deal of bookbinding talk, which is utterly in character.

I love a good, plotty fic. I'm also partial to a well-written piece of erotica. If it has some semblance of plot, great, but of course it doesn't have to. Not really the point.

Erotica, of course, is very much in the eye of the beholder (as it were), and these five fics won't appeal to everyone, but they're all well-written, (and hot IMO). Having said which, please heed ratings/warnings etc posted here, as well as on the fics themselves.

Empty Rooms, Shuttered and Dank, by

nomelon, Angel/Spike/Riley, Hard R/NC17. The author makes this rather unlikely threesome all too believable, with her trademark gritty prose. I swear you can almost smell the sweat.
