  1. Forging Bonds: What can I say? I'm a sucker for a story that will make me believe an unusual pairing. This is Tara/Faith and it set in a universe where everyone's either a dom, sub, or switch. Tara's the dom.
  2. Bread: uses bread as a metaphor for Willow and Tara's relationship. It's just so heartwarming and beautiful.
  3. The Lamb: Tara works in a hospice helping people cross over when it's their time. Willow, last of the Scoobies, is brought in as a coma patient.
  4. Sapling: Willow, Faith, and three Jewish holidays.
  5. From Beneath You It Devours: Eee, a crossover with the Carmilla web series!

When I discovered fandom and fic back in the early 2000's, there are some stories that stood out because they made me realise just how wonderfully malleable canon could be in the right hands. That realisation expanded my universe! :)

I’ve recced Te’s stories many times before, but my love for her stuff bears repeating. Post Grad series blew my tiny, sheltered mind when I read it early on in my adventures in fandom. It made me understand the power of ‘what if’. This is Spike/Xander, plot, porn and so much ‘oh my goodness’ that it makes my eyes cross just thinking about it.

More goodies this way... )

If That Mockingbird Won't Sing by Doyle. Last year I was sent a pointer to this fic that I think has been recced here before, but it is a wonderfully creepy contribution to the season!

Wild and Wonderful by solstice. Recced at an earlier Top 5 session, I read this earlier this year and found it a delightful ride of Dawn and Spike on a road trip during the S2/S3 hiatus. It's always fun to see stories imagined of the Dawnverse and I thought Dawn was a convincing kid. Bonus, the maps on each chapter showing their route.

Rewritten by TheSigyn. Another story recced here, "A magic crystal is kicked aside rather than shattered, and an old world is closed behind. How do you move forward in a life without a history? And what if your history isn’t what you thought it was?" I quite liked the ending which took a different approach from many a fanfic in having it both ways, but also in hinting at the cost of happiness no matter how it's achieved. Read more... )

or something close to a white hat anyway! I'm exhausted so this list may be shortish on descriptions but anything I recommend with Ethan in it will be near and dear to my heart.

1.
Absent Friends by il mio capitano. Oh, yeah, awesome. I recently asked if anyone could find this story for me. Basically all I'd recalled was the pub crawl based on The World's End and that Ethan was in it. Turns out it features Giles rather than Xander but given how fond I am of Giles and Ethan together, that was hardly a drawback. This one's more white-hatish rather than an out and out white-hat tale.

A story I'm currently reading, Off Your Bird's The Darkling, inspired this list. Buffy goes to that demon in Africa to get Spike back. He sends her to NYC in 1970. It's lovely to see their roles reversed, to see Buffy longing for a Spike who's slowly becoming convinced.

1) Buffy works based on Al Parker illsutration by Laura Birdsall. A collection of earlier work, I particularly love the ghost Joyce watching Passions with Spike.

2) Moving On, Forward (Come in Lost Soul) by pushingcrazies features a pairing I hadn't seen before or even thought about before. A rewrite of AtS S4 with Jonathan and Andrew hiding out in L.A. rather than Mexico, and soon enmeshed in the issues Angel's team is having. Read more... )

It's always fun to come across a story that pushes you out your comfort zone as far as ships are concerned. Here are five rare(ish) pairings - I say 'ish' because one isn't really, but it's so awesome I had to include it! *g*

In Nairobi in the Rain by inlovewithnight, Xander meets a strangely familiar girl in a Nairobi bar and realises it is Fred, who died a few weeks before. There’s just something about the atmosphere of this fic that haunts me - it’s just lovely.

Author's summary: Season 2, but with a different pre-series history. Robin Wood moves to Sunnydale to back up Buffy in her on-going battles with Drusilla. But when Buffy's romance with Angel takes a dark and dangerous turn, Robin determines his assistance won't be enough, and calls in some back up of his own: the old family friend who wears his mother's coat.

Ships, I've had a few, but then again, too few to.... that's a lie. I can ship practically anybody, if the author can show me how it works. In these meaty, angsty, and plot-driven stories, the writers made me believe in an unconventional, non-canon pairing. (And one thruple.) There may not always be a ton of romance, but there are always a ton of feelings. All links to AO3.

Into the Dark Age by Sadhyl (NC17, Buffy/Ethan/Ripper)
Buffy ends up in Black Magic 1970s London, in the company of some familiar — if much younger than she's used to — faces. She hopes to stop them from making a terrible mistake. They hope for something a lot more basic.

A couple of years back I did a post of crossovers. I’m a sucker for a well done crossover, and in all these cases you don’t need to know the other fandom for the story to work just fine. Here are five that I really like - BTVS crossed with five separate fandoms.

Thrift by Te and Pares is a crossover with The Sentinel. Blair Sandburg comes to Sunnydale to meet one Rupert Giles, expert in the supernatural. But before he can meet our favourite Watcher he runs into Faith. Let’s say it’s an educational experience for both of them. Be sure to have some tissues ready to mop up the brain tissue dribbling out of your ears.

I struggled to get this list down to five entries. So many authors have inserted incredible characters into the Buffyverse. I hope you enjoy these five ... although actually there are more than five characters because the last story has a number of originals.

Title: Business as Usual
Creator’s Name: Lilachigh
Agnes Pringle, yes! A sweet middle-aged spinster with a tea shop in an English cathedral city who was Turned on a trip to America, sets up shop in Sunnyvale. She has a bit of a thing for Spike. Don’t we all.

Ten Things That Never Happened in the BtVS Fandom by Booster
Summary: Some spells are stronger and further reaching than you’d think. What if Dawn had been around for a lot longer than you remember....?
My reason for the rec: A lovely bit of metafiction (in a way) in which Dawn's origin is even stranger than we thought.

Just One Night by Vogonguard
Summary: A careless use of the W-word and the Scoobies from Chosen meet the Scoobies from Prophecy Girl.
My reason for the rec: Not exactly a do-over, but a nice story about time travel and the evolution of most of the BtVS characters

The Multiverse by Hotpoint
Summary: Serenity falls through a rip in the continuum and Mal meets a very familiar face on the other side
My reason for the rec: This one's just fun, a head-on crash between the Serenity crew and the Buffyverse.

Dawn's Fine by Abra
Summary: Dawn Summers goes to college in Metropolis. When she notices that her History professor, Milton Fine, looks just like Spike, she can't stay away. Prof. Fine has his own agenda to go along with her crush.
My reason for the rec: It's one of the better Buffy / Smallville crossovers, and plays fair with both fandoms.

Dojo Hard by Speakertocustomers
Summary: The Buffyverse characters dwell in 17th century Japan. Gilbert and Sullivan meets Samurai movies meets - Paddington Bear? Parody, bad haiku, and martial arts in something loosely resembling BtVS S2. Very loosely.
My reason for the rec: It's immense fun and VERY silly.

Because nothing takes my mind off things like combinations of crack, fluff, smut, and Spuffy. He tried to kill Cordelia. Giles, and in fact the entire Council in London, are missing. I have no idea what’s going to happen. … And I just finished it. Wow. Wow wow wow. Read this. Now.

[livejournal.com profile] lusciousxander put up a wishlist entry for some Xander/Larry. It’s a pairing that can work wonderfully and it’s a shame there’s not more of it about.

I’ve got to start with [livejournal.com profile] nwhepcat’s Things We Never Talk About. Xander suffering from the “aspect of the demon” thing from Earshot while Larry finds himself having a shock initiation into the trials and tribulations of Scoobydom. And there’s a whole complication with Faith that always has me on the edge of my seat. Welcome to boy world…

1. Dead!Giles 'verse by [livejournal.com profile] thea_bromine. Spike helps a dying Giles. Things get strange.

2. Of Old Mystics by Omphalos and [livejournal.com profile] wolfling. After the Council has fallen, Giles rescues Ethan from the Initiative only to learn that together they have a destiny. One of my long-time faves.

3. Responsible Adults by mydiera and [livejournal.com profile] sadbhyl. Giles/Ethan/Joyce. On the night Ethan would have pulled that Fyarl transformation spell on Giles, Joyce joins them. Things change from there.
Note: Sadbhyl wrote an essay: When You Girls Are Older You'll Understand (Rupert Giles/Joyce Summers/Ethan Rayne)

4. Bookends by [livejournal.com profile] il_mio_capitano. Buffy/Giles. Mmm, a story that brightens my day when a new chapter is posted.

5. In the Morning of the Magicians by [livejournal.com profile] indri. Ripper/Ethan back in the day. On of my favorite BtVS stories.
[identity profile] dragonyphoenix.livejournal.com
1. rebelrsr’s Forging Bonds - dom/sub ‘verse with Tara as the dom.

2. Naughty Fae’s Whitechapel - Spike/Xander in an all human AU based on Ripper Street

3. Deja Without a View - [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip’s masterful retelling of [livejournal.com profile] aadler’s amazing Dust Over Pompeii for the Circle of Friends remix. Willow/Riley. I could have chosen to remix this story but I looked at it and told myself it was an impossible remix. I was so very, very wrong.

4. [livejournal.com profile] booster17’s Sleeper - Xander/Faith. If I describe the story, I’ll give it away. This has been one of my faves since I first read it.

5. [livejournal.com profile] drsquidlove’s New York - Xander/Giles. This is an amazing epic. I really can’t sum it up better than the author: Xander is thirty-seven. Divorced. Two kids. 4000 miles from Sunnydale and his Hellmouth childhood. Also, straight. Only someone forgot to tell Giles. In fact... where the hell is Giles?

I became inspired by [livejournal.com profile] red_satin_doll's classic recs wishlist. Among other things, she asked for rare pairs, Mr. Gordo, stories that explore the POV of voiceless victims, and overlooked characters. Some of these stories do double, or even triple duty!

1. Little Red Riding Hood, by Circe -- This is a rare pair, and an overlooked character, and it's from the POV of a voiceless victim. And it's fantastic. Spike/Janice

2. Stars and Crosses, by Emelye -- This is definitely a rare pair; it fits in another wished for category as well, but I'm not saying more -- there's a surprise, and it made me grin from ear to ear when I first read it.

3. Untitled ficlet, by Anna S -- This one explains itself: Spike/Lorne (the ficlet is in the second half of the linked post)

4. The Wall Series, be Debechan,Teland, and TheSpike -- Xander/Ethan -- this qualifies as a rare pair, right? Dark and dirty.

5. Domestic Bliss, by nomelon -- Spike/Riley, which I think qualifies as a rare pair, too. This is a must-read, even if you think this pairing is a non-starter for you (as it was for me, until I read it, and then WOW). It's original and captivating and emotional and hot. Trust me on this one.

This may have been the most difficult category to select from.

I didn’t track stories I like back when I first got heavy into Spander so I ended up skimming through a whole list of Spander epics. I do find it interesting that the Spander stories I like now are ones I either did keep track of or did recall once I started reading them.

These aren't out-and-out porn but it is Spander so expect some sex, that is, don't count on them being completely worksafe but they mostly are.

  1. James and Wolfling’s Sands of Time - in season 1, Giles takes Xander in and his life changes completely. It’s just so great to see Xander have a wonderful life and then the courage it takes for him to save his friends in the end. This story rocks.

I'd tell you what the other recs are up to but I'm already blushing! )

So, sparrow2000, now you know why I've been reading - and commenting - on your stories lately! For the rest of you, some of the stories are dark - I'm looking at you Memento Mori - but I believe they're all worksafe.

  1. We could have quite a lively debate about which of sparrow2000’s stories are the best, but I believe any such list would have to include Magpie. The incredible writing, the detailed descriptions … I don’t know if I can describe what makes sparow2000’s stories so great, but this one has it all.

First some fic.

Ipseity by [livejournal.com profile] spuffy_luvr. Buffy/Spike, Teen and up. A wonderful long, plotty fic, featuring an amnesiac post-Chosen Buffy and her friends', and Dawn's, attempts to help and restore her. Lots of angst ensues.

Living History by LizMarcs
Rating: PG, Worksafe
Some people have come from a place far, far away and a time far, far ahead to ask for help on an urgent matter. The time they were aiming for? February 2008. The place? Moscow. The problem? Somehow they've ended up in Cleveland, September 2003. And that’s just the beginning of the trouble; they seem to be descendants of the Scoobies and are determined not to change the past... but they haven't reckoned with Xander. Superbly written with a fascinating plot, some of the most beautifully crafted OCs I've ever seen and a wonderful portrayal of Xander and Faith. Very highly recommended!

As I was waiting for Buffyverse Top 5 to begin this month, these came to mind as in I didn't go looking at my bookmarks.

1. Indri's In the Morning of the Magicians. This is totally my head-canon for how Ripper and Ethan met. It has so many things going for it. Bourgeois Ripper who is put off by his friends' lifestyle. The story Ripper is telling himself keeps changing as he realizes he's not going to make it big as a musician. How Eyghon would not have been invoked without both Ripper and Ethan in the mix, but Ripper denies all blame, putting it all on Ethan. This is what breaks Ethan, taking the blame onto himself and thinking that he doesn't know how to have friends and that's what turns him into the Ethan from BtVS. It's a marvelous tale.

This round of Buffyverse Top 5 just wouldn't be complete without:

Conclusive Etymology of a Summers by [livejournal.com profile] clockwork_hart1 (Lucy). I love this story so much it inspired my very first fanfiction poster for another author. One of my favorite Buffy character studies, delicately etched and sympathetically observed. When it comes to Buffy Summers and the Summers sisters, Lucy owns my soul: She loved to watch her sister write. As Dawn scribbled and scrawled her soul down into books, she knew that the monks had given her a gift.

Civilian by [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip (WIllow, Riley, mentions of Willow/Tara, Willow/Kennedy, Buffy/Riley and Riley/Sam, canon-compliant post-series)  A story aching with regret in every word as a chance encounter brings the terrible weight of memory crashing down about WIllow's ears. One of the best, most devastating endings of any fic I've read this year; packs an incredible wallop. If it doesn't hit you in the gut, we may need to check you for a pulse. There’s a story there and a painful one, but she’s not one to go poking at wounds to watch them bleed, so she puts a solicitous hand on his arm.

Three Coins in a Fountain by [livejournal.com profile] rahirah (POM-verse; Buffy/Spike, the Immortal; POM/Barbsverse). She stood, five foot two of righteous Slayer fury, and the Immortal actually took a step backwards. Told you she was out of your league, mate. This one is so much fun -  60-something Buffy  and Spike Summers-Pratt are given an assignment by the Immortal to fetch some rare coins. There are...complications. This was one of the fics that made it safe for me to be a Spuffy shipper again this year. I love that our heros are older, a little plumper, comfortable in their fuller bodies, still fully sensual and sexual beings; still as snarky, sarcastic and witty as ever. And chapter 1 inspired a very meta conversation between Barb and [livejournal.com profile] quinara re: Buffy and Spike's late seasons body issues and representation; how cool is that? Chapter 2; Chapter 3 and Chapter 4.

PIece of Cake by [livejournal.com profile] spuffy_luvr; (Buffy/Spike, Buffy/Angel, Drusilla, Willow, Faith; mentions of Spike/Drusilla, and Angel/Dru). Lorelei's return to writing btvs fanfiction was one of the happiest events of the year, IMO.  If you haven't checked out her fag_ends ficlets, let [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight's rec list get you started. Piece of Cake was the winner of Best NC-17 at the last Round of Sunnydale Memorial fanfiction awards, deservedly so.  I don't read porn. I don't read NC-17. I sure as heck don't read all-human AU fics except...if anyone can get me to read one, it's [livejournal.com profile] spuffy_luvr. Superb characterization, sex that is genuinely sexy but she pulls no punches on issues of non-consent. My favorite chapters are actually the two featuring Willow, who is beautifully drawn here in a supporting role; she's becoming a Willow-writer to watch.

And finally one more from [livejournal.com profile] kwritten: taxes? - also complete here on AO3 (Buffy/Tara, Anya, Olivia, Dawn, AU S6) The remaining piece of the Finding a Balance B/T 'verse (more, please?) written for [livejournal.com profile] kikimay's prompt: taxes, Buffy S6 AU. Because I'm curious to see what you would do if you were Marti Noxon. This is the fic that opened up the Buffy/Tara, Dawn 'verse to the other ladies and introduced Olivia to it, which makes even richer. Anya gets to be the true hero, working on Buffy's taxes post-resurrection as she should have in the series, and negotiating with the WC on Buffy's behalf. A gem.

All of these are either part of a series or a rec for the series as a whole.
None of these are worksafe, but none are terribly squicky either.

1) Of Old Mystics by omphalos and Wolfling: Giles/Ethan - Giles, now head of the Council, rescues Ethan from the Initiative only to learn that they are a bonded pair, Order and Chaos, who must work together to save the world. One of my favorite go-back-to stories.

Willow is a fascinating and complex character to me, and I really enjoy fiction that reflects that. Here are five classic Willow fics. I'm going to be cautious and label them all not worksafe.

1) The Power and The Other Thing by [livejournal.com profile] mosca.Willow/Tara, Willow/Glory (not really the focus of the story) Gorgeous Wishverse story, with Nerdy Willow, Super-witch Willow, and Scary Willow all wrapped up into one. I really enjoy the way the characters from Angel were worked in. The tone is a bit chilly and remote and matches the world-building wonderfully. This is one of the most hopeful Wishverse stories I've read, but the hope seems earned. This is one of those stories that I think should get a lot more recognition than it has.

She manages to hook so many fans up on her fics and she writes Xander/Giles! It's a hard pairing to sell, but she does it so well. I've always been a fan of Xander/Giles, but I've never been a huge fan of it until I read [livejournal.com profile] drsquidlove's fics. She knows how to make an impossible pairing believable.

Also, what makes [livejournal.com profile] drsquidlove a great writer is how her fics aren't just about the main pairing, but expand to their relationships with other characters which creates a very complex character driven story.

1. Shadow Thought It Be, by [livejournal.com profile] penwiper26. Giles/OFC.
In which one Elisabeth, itinerant academic and BtVS fan, stumbles into Sunnydale and can't figure out how to leave. Elisabeth is so fully realized a character, so rich in flaws and quirks, that I can't be bothered to care that according to the author this is technically a self-insert fic. The writing is intelligent and hilarious and wonderful, Elisabeth's frequent metafictional observations are great fun, and her gradual relationship with Giles totally worked for me. This is very much a fic that doesn't sound like it ought to work but really, really does.

What if Buffy's slayer potential has been discovered by The Watchers Council in due time? What if she'd been sent to The Watchers Academy where the potential slayers get education and training? What if The Council had caught the members of The Fanged Four and kept them as prisoners and sparring partners for future slayers?
There definitely are some elements of Hogwarts template in the set-up, but the story itself is fresh and original. This unique AU-verse is based on the premise that in the middle of XX century The Watcher Council and The Initiative joined forces, and one of the consequences was the modernization of the Slayer system. As a result, we see all the familiar faces in the new circumstances. Complex, inventive plotting, spot-on voices, fast-moving narrative, paradoxical morality and fascinating choices make "The Rose" a must-read.
