I guess my Spike fan is showing. Three of these are Spike-centric.

Lines Composed a Few Miles Above the Cheers & Beers Poetry Reading by JayeMaru (Spike, G)
I like how Spike is both a reader of poetry and a poet in this work and how his life experience informs his reading of Wordsworth's poem.

China Girl from Poetry by William Pratt - VERSUS by SPIKE by MissLuci (whole chapter rated R but poem is not sexual or otherwise graphic)
MissLuci wrote a whole multichapter story full of Spike's poems and Buffy's reactions to them!! This poem is about Spike killing Xin Rong, written from the perspective of pre-series soulless Spike. Note that the prose section at the bottom of the chapter is rated R for Spuffy smut.

[personal profile] thenewbuzwuzz is a staple of the online BtVS fandom. She not only participates here each year, but helps run Seasonal Spuffy and the Sunnydale Herald. But one of her greatest contributions to the fandom, in my opinion, is her advocacy for poetry as a fanwork medium. I certainly never would have tried it if it hadn't been for her inspiration. Here are a few of my favorite buzwuzz poems.

The Limericked Adventures of Bob the Hellmouth Cop
This was the poem that started it all for me. It was the winner of a contest on the now sadly defunct Sunnydale Fanfic Club podcast and her episode opened my eyes to the potential of fandom poetry. (Actually, the podcast wound up introducing us both to each other's work, eventually leading to our ongoing beta exchange.)

The poem itself is priceless. Using the limerick format to explore the POV of a clueless Sunnydale cop is just too good. I mean, consider this stanza:

We're down to the final hours of our session, and here's one last recs list of 2019 works from me.

Thanksgiving with the Burkles, 2019 by shadowscast. This ficlet is not only a new work from her in the Buffyverse but it's a sequel! (And also perfect for this new month).

Villains by electric_heart. Fun icon of the Troika. Also I quite liked her pairing icons.

Excardiation by beer_good_foamy. "After Buffy runs away from home, Joyce finds herself bringing home a curious flowerpot from the gallery." Well you know that's not going to go well.

Roses Are Red, Angelus Is Blue by thenewbuzzwuzz. A series of scenes tied together with roses, covering up the scent of denial.

Change, Like Sunshine by still_lycoris. "When Wash first joined the crew, he thought Zoe was Mal's lady. He was quite wrong about that." And Mal was quite wrong about it disrupting a smoothly working ship.

All right, here's my last post for this session. Somehow the LiveJournal side of the comm ended up having a much more equal distribution of lists by different reccers. :D

stain the moon by yellowb (assorted ships and characters, PG-13)
It's a set of fun haiku with lovely strong character voices and POVs.

Buffy, Slaying Vampires Since 1996 by shiruji. I have to quibble about the date since it was either earlier with the movie or the TV debut was in 1997, but a cute icon nonetheless!

All the Children I've Had to Say "Good Bye" To by protoneoromantic. Such a strong finish to this, and a title with such a punch when you know who it's said by.

Comics Buffy by misbegotten. Lovely set of Buffy comics icons. No. 5 is my favorite but the Xander one is also striking.

Night Flight by JolieMariella. Wing AU Spike fanart.

The Ballad of Wishverse Giles by thenewbuzwuzz. Giles POV poem. I'd say "fun" but the episode theme wasn't on the happy side, so I'll just point out that it's clever instead ;)

In my FFN forays, I have been noticing some of the other poetry by [fanfiction.net profile] cagd (who is represented in @stultiloquentia's Jossverse Poetry Masterlist with one poem under her LJ name [livejournal.com profile] trixiefatcat ). cagd has become easily one of my favorite Buffy poets. She has written lots of beautiful free verse; what I've read so far tends to center on the Fanged Four, especially on Spike's platonic relationships. These poems go deep into characterization, and they give me all of the feels.

Lunch Money (Spike&Dawn, T)
Broken Toys (Liam, Drusilla, William, T)
Drusilla's Tears (Drusilla, Spike, T)
Numb in Her Forgiveness (Spike&Joyce, T)
Wild Roses on a Grave (Spike&Tara, T)

I tried to stay away from here, I did (because I'm running really short on spare time and attention). But I HAD to rec this first work, and then I threw some more poetry links around while I was at it.

This is it, this is the best and most beautiful new poetry project I've seen in the fandom this year. Do not miss if Spuffy or free verse appeals to you at all.

It turns out a poet by the name of Kim Wade has a Wordpress blog ''The Slayer Verses'' at buffypoetry.com (btw, it's possible to subscribe to updates via Dreamwidth), where she has been steadily posting BtVS-inspired poems since last year. I admire her knack for picking an image or a moment out of each episode (often a less than obvious pick) and creating something original that can end up very tonally different from how we usually see the episode & can sometimes loop back towards canon to illuminate themes from new angles. Below are five of my favorites that she posted this year. They are all worksafe.

Gingerbread by Kim Wade (gen)
Helpless by Kim Wade (gen)
The Zeppo by Kim Wade (Xander)
Something Blue by Kim Wade (Spuffy)
A New Man by Kim Wade (Tillow)

On the Buffyverse crossover archive tthfanfic.org, there's a collection "Jokes and Limericks, open to all", posted  by lucidity in 2008 as a multichapter work to which any site user can contribute. There were a couple of new additions this year (10 years in! Woot!), which I think is how I noticed it, but the poems I want to rec are all older.

Limerick number 1
by lucidity
Not Worksafe
Comment: a limerick about William meeting Drusilla and being turned. The raunchy, irreverent tone is so on point for the format. :)

I love sparkling dialog, but a story without it can feel timeless. Most of these are about Slayers we haven't met before, but are fascinating in their own right. Links are to AO3, when possible.

The Queen, The Soldier by [personal profile] beer_good_foamy (PG, Gen)
Once upon a time, a long long time ago, there was a town. And in the town was a girl, who didn't want to die. The story of a slayer who did things differently when faced with a people-eating giant.

Four more exciting tales, and a bonus! )

I want to thank the mods for keeping this comm open for all of us to look back and celebrate the wonderful works and people in our beloved fandom. It's all too easy to dwell on the negative, and forget all the amazing things happening all around us.

So, may I have your attention a little longer for some awesome fanwork creators worthy of wider celebration and special mention:

From [livejournal.com profile] thenewbuzwuzz: Blackout Spuffy poetry made from shooting scripts. Such creativity!

1. Fool for Love (VAMPIRE...)
2. "Angel", "Doppelgängland" and "Welcome to the Hellmouth" ("what's it like where you are?...", "good girls...", "past SHATTERS...")
3. "Hush" and "Some Assembly Required" ("- CONTINUING - MORNING...", "at the graveyard...")

Thought I'd better get this in quick before the comm closes. Again, no unifying theme, just five Buffyverse things I enjoyed in 2012.

Redemption - Scattered Thoughts by [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy. Meta that I don't think has been recced yet, but even if it has, can't be recced often enough IMO (which also applies to BGF's masterful Buffy, the Vampire Slayer vs Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

There's no proper title for this (I also had it down as 'Where's there's a skill', and other cheesy headings). The topic here is poems and fics which draw on something bigger than fandom, weaving Jossverse motifs into wider cultural themes, but never losing sight of the fandom audience. (In other words, they are very, very clever, but also hugely fun for fans).

[livejournal.com profile] quinara, Spikeid II and III. Because it's in epic iambic pentameter, and based on the Aeneid, and yet it's accessible, funny, touching and in-voice. They're heroes, dammit. They deserve this poem.
