Just a reminder that Top 5's 2021 season closes in 9 hours!

Take Care of the Rest by Hannah. There's something soft and kind about this look at how Buffy's life might have been a bit better had she taken a job at a local funeral home when first coming to Sunnydale.

Tumblr user snakeliciousbaby's artwork often explores interesting, unsettling concepts, and its tag commentary tends to turn into meta. I particularly enjoy the insightful and compassionate takes on Xander and the Scoobies.
All linked art is worksafe, but there can be profanity in the tags, some of which I quote under the cut.

Hands Heart and Soul (Xander, Willow, Buffy). Backup link.

  1. Brave New World by kaydefalls refers to wish!verse where Anya asks "How do you know the other world is any better than this?" and Giles responds "It has to be." This vid asks the question: Is it really better? And the answer's somewhat ambiguous.
  2. You may need to be as old as I am to get The Odd Couple (Giles/Spike). It takes the opening audio track from The Odd Couple tv series and puts it with images of Spike and Giles. Gives a great suggestion of them as opposite guy roommates.
  3. I Belong to You makes a convincing case for a love triangle between Buffy, Angel, and Mr. Gordo (who is played by piglet).
  4. You'd think that playing the robots in Buffy against the song Robot Girlfriend would make for a light-hearted video, but Robot Girlfriend is actually quite poignant at the end.
  5. Transparent: Oh my Goddess. This Willow character study is just amazing.

Feelings felt by robots.

To start off, I thought this discussion about "nonhuman people" went to an interesting place:

I'd love to say I'm so nice that I deliberately fulfilled [livejournal.com profile] red_satin_doll's request, but I just happend to have the same idea. Still, here you go.

1. A Nice Little Business by Lilachigh - Alice Pringle. Sounds like an OC, doesn’t she, but no, technically she fits this category. In the author’s words: the vampire lady referred to by Spike in The Replacement, when, sarcastically, he tells the Scoobies that he has been having a cup of tea with the lady who runs a tea-stall in the local garbage dump.
The rest of the recs went to The Bronze for Disco Night )
[identity profile] dragonyphoenix.livejournal.com
1. Samantha Winning’s Asylum - Buffy, Faith, and Cordelia are in a mental institution and something’s really wrong in a horror movie kind of a way. I’m very, very disappointed this isn’t a real movie even though it’d be too scary for me to watch with the sound on.
the recs are wondering if they could live in a Barbie world )

Some of my favorite Tara-centric shortfic of the past year, arranged from shortest to longest.

Same Mistakes by [livejournal.com profile] aliceinkinkland (Buffy/Tara, PG-13). Inspired by Whedon quote, where he admitted considering having the Powers That Be grant Buffy a wish at the end of Chosen to bring Tara back.
As you already guessed from the title, it's not a fluffy story, and a lot of painfully accurate parallels are made.

Hi, guys! I'm here too and this is a post about my TOP 5 Buffy icons.

But do you know how difficult it is to make a post about favorite icons and actually pick just 5 of them? I have SO MANY! So I tried to use a criterion to facilitate my task: all these icons are about the ladies in the Buffyverse - especially Buffy herself and Dawn - and the dominant color is pink. The great thing about this choice is that it allows me to eventually make more posts (Favorite icons in Black, in Red and so on) and share all my love for these awesome and mini works of genius.

(The order is not about best or less best, it's just to facilitate myself)

IMPORTANT! EDIT: I forgot about the rules - because I'm actually the worst - so I'm making some edits with other choices. All icons totally made in 2014.

And continuing towards the other end of the spectrum:

[livejournal.com profile] snowpuppies remains the queen of dark character insight, and Who Am I? (The Warm Champagne Remix) is no exception. Faith in Buffy's body decides to make good on her suggestion to Spike, and... well. Just look at that punchline.

So who here doesn't like rec lists? That's what I thought. I try to keep track of good fic for characters that aren't part of the core group, both here and at [livejournal.com profile] fantas_magoria. Here are a few of my favorites, in order of appearance:

Lydia Chalmers, Watcher — Lydia first appeared in Checkpoint, and made Watcherdom adorable. Presumed dead in the bombing of the Council by the First.

Buffybot — Introduced in Intervention, this charming creation can do comedy and tragedy with equal panache. Destroyed by Hellions.

Holden Webster, Vampire — A one-episode vampire who gets to Buffy in entirely new ways. Risen and dusted in the course of Conversations with Dead People, but not forgotten

Harmony, Vampire Personal Assistant — AtS Season 5 Harmony is the poster girl for "Evil, Soulless Things Try Harder". Still ticking, but without, you know, a heartbeat.

Dana, Slayer — Our first hint that the Slayer Empowerment Spell wasn't going to cure all ills. Dana only appeared in Damage, but we know her existence is creating ripples throughout the Slayer organization.

Be sure to check the comments of each post for additional links!

For a supposed horror-influenced series, BtVS was rarely truly horrifying. Luckily, there are fans willing to correct that. Here are five fics that have stuck in my head for years.

The Twelfth Sister/The Twelfth Sister Revisited (AO3 link thanks to [livejournal.com profile] rebcake) by Rowan. What if the Watchers' Council had managed to put Faith in custody and keep her? This fic is truly disturbing and sad... and then you get to the end, which will stay with you forever.

For my very first post to this community I wanted to list some of my favorite Buffyverse meta essays of the year. Fiction seems to be the overwhelming fan vehicle of choice, at least here on LJ/DW, but it was meta essays that pulled me into this fandom. These are by no means "the best" of the year (my full list would be closer to 10 or 11 essays), but represent some that are my touchstones for this 'verse and it's fandom:

"Rules of Engagement: Violence and Hyperreality in the Buffyverse"  by  [livejournal.com profile] lostboy_lj   may be my "if you only read one meta from 2012" choice. Why Buffy and Spike's relationship in S6 is not directly analogous to abusive relationships in RL, using "Smashed" as it's focal point.

"Buffy, the Vampire Slayer vs Buffy the Vampire Slayer"  by  [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy.   Most post-modernist thinky-thoughts; how the show's title represents the central problem of the narrative for it's titular protagonist, and how Buffy resolves her dilemma in "Chosen".

"Word of Willow: "Witch", Mirrors, and Mommy Issues"  by  [livejournal.com profile] local_max .   What I hope to be the first of several Willow-centric essays from someone who has plumbed the depths of Willow's character more thoroughly and compassionately than any fan I know of.

"Warren Mears"  by  [livejournal.com profile] itsnotmymind .   Draws parallels between Warren, Faith and Spike, how they mirror, intertwine and intersect thematically and within the story itself, and what they represent re: Buffy's psychology. Wonderfully complex.

"Where Did I Go? A Farewell to the Buffybot"   by  [livejournal.com profile] mcjulie .   One of the few essays I've seen in these parts about one of the Buffyverse's most memorable characters. (While I'm here, I'll note that mcjulie has also taken on the awesome task of continuing the   "Episode Polls"   and discussion where [personal profile] gabrielleabelle  left off, starting with S5's  "Tough Love".  Especially recommended is her poll and meta commentary on "The Gift".)

The little gals often have big stories, sadly hidden from the viewer. Fortunately, we have many talented writers who can spotlight them beautifully. Here are a few of the many standouts from 2011:

Wedding From Hell - verse by [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight
http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=shapinglight&keyword=Wedding%20From%20Hellverse&filter=all
PG-13 verging on R for a bit of suggestive naughtiness. Alternate season 4 in which Buffy and Spike got married. Shapinglight makes the most of the situation, marrying her own spin with overall Buffyverse absurdity -- with Angel as best man, Dru as maid of honor, and Buffy/Faith bodyswap at the most inappropriate moment. Outrageously funny.

Don’t you just love those random, seemingly inconsequential walk-on characters? Sometimes they become regulars (Harmony, Jonathan), sometimes they show up again a couple more times (Ethan Rayne, Sandy the vampire/victim from Doppelgangland), or maybe they just go on with their “lives” (Sheila from School Hard, my personal favorite). Don’t you want to know more about them? Now you can, with these delightful, mostly canon, fill-in-the-blank back-stories.

Five really good ones... )

When we laugh at bad things that plague us, we look at them through the perspective of gods and have more freedom to deal with them. Spuffy relationship has always been plagued by impossible odds and incredible hardships. If we're able to laugh at them, Buffy and Spike are OK. Smile, people!

Don't Stop by [livejournal.com profile] nautibitz
NC-17, post-Passion. Spike doesn't need his wheelchair anymore - but no one knows that yet. Buffy and Spike battle it out in a ghost town saloon. Throw in a lasso, a mechanical bull, an acid-spewing sewer beast, top-shelf whiskey, an elk head and a Journey song, and the sex just writes itself. Nauti at her best. Dialogues are stellar. Practically every line deserves to be a quote in a frame. (To read, you have to join Nauti's community [livejournal.com profile] nautific)

Warren Mears is a very underused character in fanfiction, I think. He had a lot of potential and he was such a dark character without completely losing that human edge.

Here's my list of Top 5 Warren Mears Fictions

1. Fucking in the Dark by Moonloon

Rated NC-17 this strange little vignette showcases just how dark Warren/Andrew could be behind the scenes. It's the epitomy of how dark Warren could be and how manipulative and just how much potential for Scary Supervillain he really had.

Four More and a bonus just for sheer nerve )
