When compiling my favourite fics from this year I discovered a number that aren’t common pairings: Xander/Oz, Riley/Graham, Xander/Connor and Xander/Larry. It turns out these fics were written by two of my favourite authors (who always impress me):
mireille719 and
reremouse. I feel these two should be showered with love and admiration for their fantastic work!
1.
mireille719 - Variations on a Five-Paragraph Theme, Xander/Oz, Teen. If at first you don't succeed... Set in an AU in which Willow/Oz never happened. This story is indeed written as “variations on a five-paragraph theme” and wow, it works so well!
mireille719 is really successfully at experimenting with different fic formats and this is a truly awesome example of that. It’s very impressive how well she utilizes the format to add layers of meaning to the story. A wonderful and original fic.
2.
reremouse - At Ease, Riley/Graham, Teen. Maple doughnuts, post limb-loss, a homeless vet and the persistence of getting up again. This is a pairing I had previously never thought about, and this fic sells me on it so much that I’m hoping
reremouse will write more Riley/Graham fics. The fic does such a great job with the characterization and really gets to the heart of who these guys are, even though they've gone through a lot over the post-Sunnydale years. I love how Riley's still this really decent and caring guy who tries hard, and has a dorky sense of humour; and how Graham still has this quiet stoic loyalty despite what he may be going through. It's also such a poignant story about these guys trying to figure out what do to now that they no longer have missions and orders to follow. And I just love how there's so much that goes unsaid in this fic, running just under the surface - which is so perfect for these two.
3.
reremouse - Islands Beyond the Ordinary, Xander/Connor, Mature. Weird, wig, trees, sand, memory loss in paradise, little explanation. I know that
reremouse write Xander really well (she has his voice down) but this story reveals that she also rocks at writing Connor! This is such a fun and sexy pairing that I wish was written more often, and this fic is a great argument for why. There's such a fantastic flow to the story; it feels like we're rolling along a wave with them. And the banter throughout is fantastic. Plus there’s a Godotesque sequence that’s just brilliant!
4.
mireille719 - The Most Surprising Thing, Xander/Larry, Teen. The thing was, he didn't like Larry all that much.
mireille719 is one of the authors who convinced me that Xander/Larry is a pairing I love to read, and this seemingly simple fic is a great example why it’s an awesome pairing. It’s written as five 100 word drabbles. I love how each part builds on the "The thing was..." and how each part's sentence altered – it’s a wonderful progression and a wonderful fic!
5.
reremouse - Untitled Xander/Larry, Xander/Larry, Mature. A boy. Another boy. A high school. Heaping helpings of denial.
reremouse is the other author who convinced me that Xander/Larry rocks. This is a WIP I love and am always excited when there’s a new part. This fic is so sweet and awkward and tentative and, well, let's face it, adorable (but still in a manly teenage boy way of course)! I love the banter and how well everyone (Scoobies, Larry and Xander) are written. An awesome fic!
