I found this gem of a ficlet collection last November while discussing rarepairs in the Elysian Fields shoutbox. I said, "What if there was a *nice* Turok-Han," and boom: Irishrose, who modded the vamp_monologues challenge back in 2004, happened to be right there. She went, "funny you should ask," and linked me to the first item on this rec list. Then I snooped around some of the rest of the comm and had a fantastic time, because minor character POVs and soulless vampires are two of my favorite things.

Ultimate Evil...or you know, not. by Irishrose (ETA: AO3 link)
Vampire: an Ubervamp
1135 words, PG-13
What if there was a nice Turok-Han!!!

On the Buffyverse crossover archive tthfanfic.org, there's a collection "Jokes and Limericks, open to all", posted  by lucidity in 2008 as a multichapter work to which any site user can contribute. There were a couple of new additions this year (10 years in! Woot!), which I think is how I noticed it, but the poems I want to rec are all older.

Limerick number 1
by lucidity
Not Worksafe
Comment: a limerick about William meeting Drusilla and being turned. The raunchy, irreverent tone is so on point for the format. :)

So the fandom isn't as active as it once was, but there are still communities keeping up the good work. Here are a few challenge responses I liked this year.

[livejournal.com profile] spook_me
Unwrapping by [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni. Spike has a rare birthday gift for Dru. She's very happy with it, especially as it's the last one. Spike/Dru.

And more of my favorite meta from the past year.

The trouble with insiders series by [livejournal.com profile] kwritten. Deep multi-chaptered analysis of several Buffy characters through "Insiders vs. Outsiders" scope. Consists of: 1: The heroic outsider, 2: Dawn and outsider knowledge and
3: Xander and the gap of lack.

Running on Empty: by Cas –Spike/Dean - Dean is a broken man who is plagued not only by memories of the horrific things he's done, but also by lingering dark needs that he can't control. For him, there is no hope, until he meets the vampire Spike under circumstances that could finish them both. http://www.tthfanfic.org/story.php?no=24235

The Other Bloody Ring: by Mabel Marsters - since I seem to be doing crossovers, here is a Spike/Damon story. Sorter and fluffier than the rest, it is definitely worth reading. Thwarted in his efforts to hold on to the Gem of Amara, Spike opts to go visit with an old friend, leading to some unsettling discoveries. The slash is not explicit, but it makes you wish the story had gone on longer! http://mabel-marsters.livejournal.com/105183.html

Pity Us We Wakeful– Angel/Willow/Spike from Velvetwhip (Gabrielle) I believe that this is the one story in all of fandom that had the greatest affect on me. Bleak, tragic and beautifully written, it’s about the compromises we make, and how painful they can be. It’s greatest impact is that nothing really bad happens – no tragic event – it all takes place in choices people make and the half-life they live because of them.
http://velvetwhip.livejournal.com/tag/fic%3A%20ats%3A%20pity%20us%20we%20wakeful

A Sire’s Family – The first story of a trilogy. While this is definitely Spike/Angel, there is so much more going on in this wonderful AU. Angel calls his family to him very early in the series because Giles asks him to. Then this story takes a wonderful turn into a excellent created universe. featuring all of Angel's childer. http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=theladymerlin&keyword=A%20Sire%27s%20Call%20~%20Angel%2FSpike&filter=all

The Blind Man and a Fool to Lead Him by Cave Canem - Spike & Wesley - Post NFA. Spike is charged with taking Wesley to England, beneath the radar of the Senior partners. Brought back by Illyria, Wesley is permanently damaged by a complete inability to read. This story is funny, sad, and at times profound. http://wesleyfanfiction.net/archive/viewstory.php?sid=846

In an aging fandom like ours, it's always reassuring to see an influx of new blood every year or even every couple of months. Here are a few of 2008's enductees and fics of theirs that I enjoyed. The list includes a selection of gen and pairing fics of varying lengths.

1. A Man of Many Colors by [livejournal.com profile] snickfic
Oz, G, through BtVS S2 "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered"
Summary: A character study through Oz's hair dying decisions.

Review: Talk about bang for your buck. Snickelish takes one facet of Oz's personality - his ever changing hair color - and goes the distance with it by digging deep and creating a backstory that does a lot to shed some light on a character whose past and inner workings were barely even touched on in canon. I felt very satisfied after reading this and more than once thought, "Yes. That makes so much sense." Creative, deep, and somewhat sad, this shot definately makes you wonder what other hidden worlds there are to explore within Buffy and Angel's large ensemble cast.

This isn't a perfectly coherent group, but I think they all have something in common: taking a strong format/theme/gimmick and running with it successfully. Each one made me think 'I would never have done that - but I wish I could!' (Several are not rated, but nothing seriously over PG-13).

In no particular order:

Pentimento: 52 moments that never happened to Dawn (and one that probably will) by [livejournal.com profile] nwhepcat- an amazing run of drabbles inserting Dawn into seasons 1-4. Funny, sad and insanely clever - the best kind of fic.

I read a wide range of fic and pairings, and I enjoy teh angst and meaningful meditations on our beloved characters as much as the next gal. If I'm honest with myself, though, what delights me the most is laughing at those same characters when I find them in unexpected situations. (And if they fall down, literally or metaphorically, so much the better. I'm cruel that way.) With this self-awareness firmly in mind, I looked back over the year to the creative offerings that not only left me with a big smile on my face but that I return to when I need a little pick-me-up. Here they are, in order of discovery:
--

1. The Caseus Prize by [livejournal.com profile] philips
Diabolically hilarious Spuffy ficlet, R for "sexual wackiness." A tale of cheese voodoo gone wrong that makes Spike do things that would mortify even an (un)dead man. Combine a Big Bad who's fallen into a vat of curds n' bad!fic and the long-suffering Slayer who struggles to save his bacon while fending off his confused advances, and you have a recipe for some grade-A dairy-based comedy.

It's a sad fact that our heroes weren't given the most healthy and life-affirming sexual relationships. Happiness was often short lived with their partners, if not outright self-destructive. This year there were a number of metas and discussions on the Scoobies, but more specifically Buffy's, bad lot when it came to matters of carnal love. I've listed them in the order I think it makes most sense to read them, if one were to take this as an immense treatise on differing viewpoints about sex in the Buffyverse.

1. More Scoobies and Their Sextoys (Meta) by [livejournal.com profile] stormwreath
Although his polling experiment started as a humorous exploration of what the Scoobies might be up to with themselves between the sheets, this meta also speaks to the characters basic personality traits and how their temperaments might influence their sex lives. There's also some talk of the Kinsey scale that grounds this speculative and humorous meta in the real world. For those interested in fluid sexuality and the Kinsey scale, I'd also direct you to [livejournal.com profile] gabrielleabelle 's interesting meta on Willow's Gay Now!

I didn't come all this way to get knocked up by some demon dust )
