I think we're now in the Flash Forward part of the season to highlight fanworks from 2023. So to that end here's my usual round up of five fics that caught my eye at this year's

summer_of_giles. I love that the great and venerable SoG is still active and it gives me great joy to participate every year.

Only the Worthy by

il_mio_capitano is a great piece of Giles, Spike snark, in which our heroes try to work out how to release a sacred dagger from the hands of a mummy without triggering the curse. Don’t you hate it when you’re in that position? This is loads of fun and Giles and Spike bitching about their lot in life is gold.

Ask the Things You Shouldn't Mis0s by Punch Kicker 15 - Willow's spell lets MIss Kitty Fantastico understand human speech. Humans are complicated.

The Girl Who Courted Death by Off Your Bird - I'm giving you the author's summary 'cause it's just that good: Due to a misfortune of genetics, Buffy is never Called as a Slayer. Instead, she grows up in L.A. with a different set of challenges and trials, unaware of the supernatural world. That is, until a chance encounter with the Slayer of Slayers changes her life—and everything afterward—forever.

The Power of Voodoo by Lucid Screamer - Xander, who dressed as the Goblin King for Halloween, is creating a labyrinth in Sunnydale. WiP that's going in a very interesting direction.

The Dawn of Miss Kitty Fantastico, or why I’m pretty sure Dawn Summers is actually a cat. Interesting theory about why Miss Kitty is written off with little explanation (although she in season five at least once, something the author failed to notice). I find the idea creative and oddly possible, minus her appearance in Family.

Spike/Xander is my OTP, and I have high standards about how Spike and Xander are written. These five authors are people I’d point you to as excellent examples of good Spander writers (and good writers in general). They write both Spike and Xander really really well!

1.

reremouse - Small Imperfections, Adult. Spike and Xander in Savannah a few years after Sunnydale caved in. The delightfully slow pace of this WIP fits the pace of life in hot Savannah – and the slow developing of a relationship between Spike and Xander.

reremouse’s fic is always wonderful to read because it’s so witty, smart, funny and moving, and this is a WIP I encourage you to jump on (even if you’re resistance to WIPs) because it’s the type of story perfectly suited to the WIP format.( Click here for the other 4 awesome fics )

Here’s my five favourite Giles/Xander fics by authors who consistently impress me with their grasp of Xander’s character (they write him with humour!), plus they totally get that Giles isn’t just some stuffy old guy!

1.

savoytruffle - You Can Be a Winner at The Game of Life, Mature. Early early Season 4. Giles is in trouble, Xander is weak, Giles is silly, Xander is smart. This is a funny story with an undercurrent of seriousness (and backstory) that just propels you along.

savoytruffle is the master of narrative flow and it shows in this fic, plus her Xander and Giles voices are top notch. This is the kind of story that reminds me how very talented a writer she is.

1- The Jump!Verse by

kimberly_fan Xander finds himself stuck with Spike in a "Groundhog Day" type of time loop. The sequel to "It's Just A Jump To The Left," in which Xander faces the consequences of the time loop and realizes that making changes in his relationship with Spike isn't quite as easy as he'd like.
