1) Swan Song (Buffy/Angel; PG) by

librarian2003: If you haven't discovered Jo's impossibly brilliant stories by now... well, you have missed out. Whether you like the Buffy/Angel pairing or not, this story (like all her others) will leave you breathless with awe and emotion. Also, you'll never think of Swan Lake the same way again.

beer-good-foamy's Ms Summers Goes to Washington: A crossover with West Wing: The American people need protection from vampires. Buffy needs funding. The American government has money. You'd think there'd be an obvious solution to this. And so, one day, Buffy, Giles and Willow dressed up in their best business suits and dropped by the White House.

skuzzbopper's Three Dog Night series: Spike catches Xander reading a book on seducing non-mortals, and offers three nights of hands-on "lessons" in the subject-- which is just wonderful, since the non-mortal Xander had been hoping to seduce was Spike.

Okay, here we go. Three fics that got Slay Me Awards in 2010 and one that didn’t, but could have. (Considering how many ficlets fit into that category, I could probably do another whole post. LOL) And one rec for a community that was chock full of wonderful fic.

West of the Moon, East of the Sun by KnifeEdge – a new writer to our fandom, she took us all by happy surprise with her long, plotty Spuffy fic. Based on a fairytale format, it sucks you in and keeps you coming back for more. She had me at “hello”, or, well, okay, the minute Buffy woke up in that dark room with only a bed and a vampire. If you think that means smutty pwpw fic, you are oh, so very wrong! You can find it here

One of my favourite C/A fics ever, where Amnesia!Cordy makes a wish to bring back her memories, creating an entirely new reality in the process. Can Cordy bring back the world she once knew? Left of center pairings and spot on characterizations of every character present. Everyone should read this, not just C/A fans. Seriously amazing fic.

If you write in fandom, you know the ones I'm talking about. The fics that turn your gears, keep the bar high, give you new ideas about plot and style and characterization. The fics that make you stop at the end and think, "Wow. I wish I could write like that". And then you realize that maybe you can. Stories like these keep the torch paced to its journey, handing down craft and wisdom as new writers come into the fold. Each of these pieces have come to mean a great deal to me. Thanks for letting me share them with you.

This isn't a perfectly coherent group, but I think they all have something in common: taking a strong format/theme/gimmick and running with it successfully. Each one made me think 'I would never have done that - but I wish I could!' (Several are not rated, but nothing seriously over PG-13).
