dragonyphoenix: Katchoo from Strangers in Paradise (katchoo)
[personal profile] dragonyphoenix
I'm unsure of exactly when Buffyverse Top 5 ends, so I'm getting this in before work. Indri has written what may well be my favorite Buffy fanfic of all time In the Morning of the Magicians, Giles and Ethan, the electric Kool-Aid funky Satan groove year, in the early seventies. I decided to share stories from her rec list but a lot of the links were dead so I've been looking up stories; I've started posting a list of her recs here if anyone else is interested. I can't say they're the top 5 because I haven't read all the stories in her list yet.

Herself NYC captured captured Spike's darker side, the vampire's indifference for human life, but also something of the poet who cares for something higher, and I'm thinking of the poet where he tells her to run like hell if she sees him again, in
Manhattan Nocturne
.

the rest of the stories are dragging me away from the computer, shouting that I'll be late for work if I don't get a move on )

Being something of an expert on bad days lately, and wanting to contribute to this fabulous community, I decided I would share five stories I always go back and read when I am feeling down. Now those of you who know me don't need the following explanation, but for those who don't... no, these stories will not all be schmoopy fluff. I'm not known as the Queen of Angst for nothing and sometimes what makes me feel better is really, really angsty or even dark!fic. Read on... if you dare:

1) Red Frame, White Light by [livejournal.com profile] sparrow2000: Dark, creepy, and so exquisitely-crafted that it's like a blood red diamond. What is it about? Xander's visit to a 7-11 is anything but a well-lit fest of overpriced snack food. Other than that, all you need to know is that Sparrow does that voodoo that she do so well.

I tried to avoid rec'ing works that I rec every year but Restfield's Saturday Night vid, music by Bay City Rollers and set during Band Candy, is such a delight that I just can't not share. I adore how it's such a fun vid but then turns poignant in the end. Also, the Mayor turning and leaving on "Gotta Go" just amuses me every time.

the rest of the links are cheering me up because I have to replace brakes on a car I bought a year ago. ;-( )

Sticks head above the parapet...I'm not around much the next couple of weeks, so I'm going to front-load my entries, so apologies for the spamming.

A lot of my reading this year came from [livejournal.com profile] summer_of_giles. One of the days was an open call for drabbles, using the last line of the last drabble as the first line of the next drabble challenge. They were all great fun, but here are five that really caught my eye.

Drabbling this way... )

1. What I look for in any story is the emotion. Solshine's The Letters has that in spades as it reviews Buffy's evolving reaction to Spike's letters. The story also has incredible details: the unexpected elegance of Spike's script, the inelegant sealing wax as if he's defending himself against the emotions expressed in his letters.

2. The Scooby's watch over Giles the summer after he's tortured by Angelus in Gilescandy's The Watcher's Watch Diary '98. I adore how the kids stand together to support Giles when he needs them, even when he isn't willing to admit he needs/wants help!, and how each character's personality shines through in their entries.

3. deird1 does an amazing job of juxtaposing humor with guilt and grief in The Very Secret Diary of Andrew Wells. Andrew's personality shines through and his journal comments, such as listing an ongoing debate over the prowess of Batman vs. Spiderman as strategy discussions and morale boosters, provide a humorous background against the growing realization that something's not just right with the upcoming battle.

4. Eee! il_mio_capitano's Distractions might be only a drabble but it is brill. I don't know what to say without giving too much away so go, read, and enjoy!

5. And I know this isn't generally done, but the whole idea for this rec list came from me wanting to rec my story The Letters (the 84, Charing Cross Road remix) in which we see Anya and Severus Snape's relationship through a series of letters, e-mails, and wedding invitations.
[identity profile] dragonyphoenix.livejournal.com
One of my images was originally created toward the end of 2015 but has been reworked in 2016. Since I wasn't sure if that should count, I made it my extra.

  1. Restfield's Not Thinking About Buffy - OK, I'm not good with images so I don't know what to say but it's in how he's looking away from her, how she's in the smoke. I adore it.

the rest of the links are getting me a copy of Drawing for Dummies so maybe I could sketch something cool for next year's rec list )

I'm a big fan of fics where a well-timed spell, a friend stepping in to help, or someone asking the right question at the right time can solve a problem from canon.

Here are five short classic fics in that category:

1. Apotheosis by Ephemeral Night (Willow/Tara, General Audiences). Willow stumbles upon the secret for carrying out the Thy Will Be Done Spell in a more effective manner, and comes up with some clever and audacious to eliminate nearly every threat the Scooby Gang will ever face, and then takes it even further into the ultimate fix-it fic territory. Tagged as "fluff and crack" in AO3, and it's high quality fluff and crack.

The rest under the cut )

The Prompt: Write about changes in relationships (friend to enemy or vice versa), or introduce characters that have never met, or something else that fits the theme.

Party Demons by [livejournal.com profile] kantayra - The world might be ending but at least Clem’s made a new friend. Hee!

Sleeping Arrangements by [livejournal.com profile] gwynnega - given that they're drabbles, it can be hard to describe the story without ruining the surprise

Unconventional by [livejournal.com profile] glassslipper - ditto

All in the Retelling by [livejournal.com profile] xmirax - rescuing the world from Angelus as told by one who lived to tell the tale

Hubris by [livejournal.com profile] knotted_rose - I don’t want to ruin the surprise. Angel story.

Edited on 30 Oct to include author names,

Here are five [livejournal.com profile] open_on_sunday entries I really enjoyed last year. And looking back through links I’ve collected I’m embarrassed that I didn`t get around to commenting on a few on them, so I really must recify that! But that aside, they are all great in their different ways.

I’ve Got You Under My Skin by [livejournal.com profile] xspike4evax is a lovely look inside Cordy’s head as she wonders what she sees in Xander.

Follow the trail of breadcrumbs... )

Hello, gentle readers of this lovely fandom. First-time poster here, because...I have recs! Now the challenge is to group them by five and somehow come up with creative categories for them. :)

1. Answering Prayers (Joyce/Angel, R) by [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip. Buffyverse is deep and wide, but have you ever expected to find stories shipping Joyce/Angel? I confess I hadn't. The character of Joyce, who is not as fleshed out in canon as I'd have liked, absolutely comes alive with Velvetwhip's well-paced and restrained story-telling. It's an interesting POV that will have you question your previous opinions of Buffy, who is, in comparison, just a child. This nuanced, angsty story is full of both sense and sensibility, simultaneously clever and plausible, such that it's made a convert out of me! Rejoice for Joyce!

But wait, there are FOUR more... )

Some of my favorite Tara-centric shortfic of the past year, arranged from shortest to longest.

Same Mistakes by [livejournal.com profile] aliceinkinkland (Buffy/Tara, PG-13). Inspired by Whedon quote, where he admitted considering having the Powers That Be grant Buffy a wish at the end of Chosen to bring Tara back.
As you already guessed from the title, it's not a fluffy story, and a lot of painfully accurate parallels are made.

Some favorite crossover stories of the past year, arranged form shortest to longest.

All In A Day's Work by [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy (Buffy-centric, crossover with the song "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots", PG-13).
To be fair, Buffy wasn't entirely sure how she was supposed to stop a giant robot about to attack Tokyo. But still, being told that someone else would handle it felt a bit weird.
Yes, it's crossover with a song. Yes, it works. Go read it!

Peers over the parapet and waves at everone. Wow, where did 2015 go!

I admit to shameless pillaging from my end of year review, but then why reinvent the wheel. There were a lot more than five gen fics that I loved this year, so this is just a cross-section of them.

Last Man Standing by [livejournal.com profile] thea_bromine finds a potential trainee watcher having a chat with the head of the Council. This is lovely, vivid storytelling and well worth a read.

And there's more... )

This round of Buffyverse Top 5 just wouldn't be complete without:

Conclusive Etymology of a Summers by [livejournal.com profile] clockwork_hart1 (Lucy). I love this story so much it inspired my very first fanfiction poster for another author. One of my favorite Buffy character studies, delicately etched and sympathetically observed. When it comes to Buffy Summers and the Summers sisters, Lucy owns my soul: She loved to watch her sister write. As Dawn scribbled and scrawled her soul down into books, she knew that the monks had given her a gift.

Civilian by [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip (WIllow, Riley, mentions of Willow/Tara, Willow/Kennedy, Buffy/Riley and Riley/Sam, canon-compliant post-series)  A story aching with regret in every word as a chance encounter brings the terrible weight of memory crashing down about WIllow's ears. One of the best, most devastating endings of any fic I've read this year; packs an incredible wallop. If it doesn't hit you in the gut, we may need to check you for a pulse. There’s a story there and a painful one, but she’s not one to go poking at wounds to watch them bleed, so she puts a solicitous hand on his arm.

Three Coins in a Fountain by [livejournal.com profile] rahirah (POM-verse; Buffy/Spike, the Immortal; POM/Barbsverse). She stood, five foot two of righteous Slayer fury, and the Immortal actually took a step backwards. Told you she was out of your league, mate. This one is so much fun -  60-something Buffy  and Spike Summers-Pratt are given an assignment by the Immortal to fetch some rare coins. There are...complications. This was one of the fics that made it safe for me to be a Spuffy shipper again this year. I love that our heros are older, a little plumper, comfortable in their fuller bodies, still fully sensual and sexual beings; still as snarky, sarcastic and witty as ever. And chapter 1 inspired a very meta conversation between Barb and [livejournal.com profile] quinara re: Buffy and Spike's late seasons body issues and representation; how cool is that? Chapter 2; Chapter 3 and Chapter 4.

PIece of Cake by [livejournal.com profile] spuffy_luvr; (Buffy/Spike, Buffy/Angel, Drusilla, Willow, Faith; mentions of Spike/Drusilla, and Angel/Dru). Lorelei's return to writing btvs fanfiction was one of the happiest events of the year, IMO.  If you haven't checked out her fag_ends ficlets, let [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight's rec list get you started. Piece of Cake was the winner of Best NC-17 at the last Round of Sunnydale Memorial fanfiction awards, deservedly so.  I don't read porn. I don't read NC-17. I sure as heck don't read all-human AU fics except...if anyone can get me to read one, it's [livejournal.com profile] spuffy_luvr. Superb characterization, sex that is genuinely sexy but she pulls no punches on issues of non-consent. My favorite chapters are actually the two featuring Willow, who is beautifully drawn here in a supporting role; she's becoming a Willow-writer to watch.

And finally one more from [livejournal.com profile] kwritten: taxes? - also complete here on AO3 (Buffy/Tara, Anya, Olivia, Dawn, AU S6) The remaining piece of the Finding a Balance B/T 'verse (more, please?) written for [livejournal.com profile] kikimay's prompt: taxes, Buffy S6 AU. Because I'm curious to see what you would do if you were Marti Noxon. This is the fic that opened up the Buffy/Tara, Dawn 'verse to the other ladies and introduced Olivia to it, which makes even richer. Anya gets to be the true hero, working on Buffy's taxes post-resurrection as she should have in the series, and negotiating with the WC on Buffy's behalf. A gem.
[identity profile] beer-good-foamy.livejournal.com
Dead Girls' Party by Erimthar (Post-series - Tara, Cordelia, Anya)
In the Buffyverse, being dead doesn't mean you don't have important work to do. Ever wonder why vampires don't simply kill Slayers in their sleep? This is why.

Four more )
[identity profile] red-satin-doll.livejournal.com
I've already rec'd Lucy's Buffy & Tara friendship fic "Talk to Me"; This year she vowed to be Anya, a "vengeance demon" for oft-neglected women of the 'verse and their relationships to each other and she's kept that promise in a big way by creating marvelous must-read stories. These are just a sample: one shippy, the rest gen-friendship, all female-centric.

"Putting the Check in Checkpoint" (Buffy, Anya, Ensemble, S5 episodic of "Checkpoint") - For [livejournal.com profile] snickfic's lady-love fest prompt: "Buffy and Anya. A moment when they understood each other perfectly." This fic is my headcanon now -  the way it should have been. It feels like a true "deleted scene" from that episode in every way. Perfection. I can't imagine anyone improving on this.

"Holding on to Forever" (Buffy, mentions of Dawn, midS5, post-The Body) - written for [livejournal.com profile] lynzie914's prompt for a Buffy fic: "My friends assure me my heart will heal, but they also believe that CPR works like on TV. (Six broken ribs and a cracked sternum. Good as new.)" at [livejournal.com profile] kwritten's lady-love fest. An achingly lovely portrait of Buffy's struggles to function in the face of overwhelming loss.

"A Lesson in Understanding" (Joyce, Giles, early S3, episodic of "Anne") - Inspired by a prompt from [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip. Another "it should and COULD have been this way" that gives Joyce Summers her due, and the series only occasionally offered us: the humanly-flawed but very real complexity, love and quiet strength inherited by both her daugthers. Summers blood, indeed.

"Corruption's Only A Sin When it Doesn't Get Finished" (NC-17, Cordelia/Lilah, AtS) - Something on the lighter side for the Fifth Annual Femslash Kink Meme on Dreamwidth. I don't read NC-17 fics, I'm not into sex scenes, I haven't watched AtS (what happens to Cordy? *sniffle* I just can't) ergo this fic isn't anything I'm into...except when it's this sexy, funny and just plain damn delightful?  I can be seduced.

"Through Dirt" (Kennedy, S7 post-Get it Done; character death) - Another fic that "fills in the holes" inspired by a prompt, this one from [livejournal.com profile] dragonyphoenix, who felt that Chloe's suicide was brushed off far too easily on the show. Lucy takes the tantalizing hints of a greater complexity to Kennedy's character that are hinted at on the series, but never really developed, and burrows deep beneath the surface in this character study. Haunting from start to finish.

There is not a lot that these fics have in common, other than wonderful writing and all having Spike and Buffy in them to some extent, but RL has been very busy this last year, so I don't have any nicely-sorted-into-category type lists to offer. If I get time I will try to pop back with some more lists.

In an aging fandom like ours, it's always reassuring to see an influx of new blood every year or even every couple of months. Here are a few of 2008's enductees and fics of theirs that I enjoyed. The list includes a selection of gen and pairing fics of varying lengths.

1. A Man of Many Colors by [livejournal.com profile] snickfic
Oz, G, through BtVS S2 "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered"
Summary: A character study through Oz's hair dying decisions.

Review: Talk about bang for your buck. Snickelish takes one facet of Oz's personality - his ever changing hair color - and goes the distance with it by digging deep and creating a backstory that does a lot to shed some light on a character whose past and inner workings were barely even touched on in canon. I felt very satisfied after reading this and more than once thought, "Yes. That makes so much sense." Creative, deep, and somewhat sad, this shot definately makes you wonder what other hidden worlds there are to explore within Buffy and Angel's large ensemble cast.
