1) Another Harris Family Joke by punch_kicker15: BUFFY: Have you ever done an exchange program?
XANDER: My dad tried to sell me to some Armenians once, does that count? - Inca Mummy Girl

2)
When Xander Harris Was A Girl by nothorse: After the road-trip Xander had a demony accident. And now she must cope.

3)
Dirty Boy by dipenates: Xander feels like he and Faith are on the same page, like they have a connection. Episode tag for 3.05 "Consequences".

4) Words to Live By by Sparrow2000:
After Sunnydale collapses, Xander gets an unexpected visitor. A fic that will take a very dark turn.

5) Letters Never Send by nothorse: Xander tries to write a letter to Jesse's parents.

This may have been the most difficult category to select from.

I didn’t track stories I like back when I first got heavy into Spander so I ended up skimming through a whole list of Spander epics. I do find it interesting that the Spander stories I like now are ones I either did keep track of or did recall once I started reading them.

These aren't out-and-out porn but it is Spander so expect some sex, that is, don't count on them being completely worksafe but they mostly are.

  1. James and Wolfling’s Sands of Time - in season 1, Giles takes Xander in and his life changes completely. It’s just so great to see Xander have a wonderful life and then the courage it takes for him to save his friends in the end. This story rocks.

I'd tell you what the other recs are up to but I'm already blushing! )

Some favorite complete longfics from the past years.
Any bad English in summaries is mine and shouldn't be blamed on fic authors.

Gently Down the Stream by [livejournal.com profile] shadowscast (Ensemble, with some Buffy/Spike, PG-13). Here's Buffy's life in a nutshell: dead mom, dead-beat dad, dead end job, dependent sister. She's pulling double shifts at the Double Meat Palace to make ends meet.
And yet, she's actually pretty happy! She's got supportive friends and a sexy English boyfriend. Her life is full of love, and frankly after that accident last year and the coma, she's grateful just to be alive.
Oh, and the main point - it's NOT all-human AU.

Running on Empty: by Cas –Spike/Dean - Dean is a broken man who is plagued not only by memories of the horrific things he's done, but also by lingering dark needs that he can't control. For him, there is no hope, until he meets the vampire Spike under circumstances that could finish them both. http://www.tthfanfic.org/story.php?no=24235

The Other Bloody Ring: by Mabel Marsters - since I seem to be doing crossovers, here is a Spike/Damon story. Sorter and fluffier than the rest, it is definitely worth reading. Thwarted in his efforts to hold on to the Gem of Amara, Spike opts to go visit with an old friend, leading to some unsettling discoveries. The slash is not explicit, but it makes you wish the story had gone on longer! http://mabel-marsters.livejournal.com/105183.html

Pity Us We Wakeful– Angel/Willow/Spike from Velvetwhip (Gabrielle) I believe that this is the one story in all of fandom that had the greatest affect on me. Bleak, tragic and beautifully written, it’s about the compromises we make, and how painful they can be. It’s greatest impact is that nothing really bad happens – no tragic event – it all takes place in choices people make and the half-life they live because of them.

A Sire’s Family – The first story of a trilogy. While this is definitely Spike/Angel, there is so much more going on in this wonderful AU. Angel calls his family to him very early in the series because Giles asks him to. Then this story takes a wonderful turn into a excellent created universe. featuring all of Angel's childer. http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=theladymerlin&keyword=A%20Sire%27s%20Call%20~%20Angel%2FSpike&filter=all

The Blind Man and a Fool to Lead Him by Cave Canem - Spike & Wesley - Post NFA. Spike is charged with taking Wesley to England, beneath the radar of the Senior partners. Brought back by Illyria, Wesley is permanently damaged by a complete inability to read. This story is funny, sad, and at times profound. http://wesleyfanfiction.net/archive/viewstory.php?sid=846

Some of my favorite horror fics.
Any bad English and awkward phrasing in summaries is mine and shouldn't be blamed on fic authors.

Cicatrix by Teland & [livejournal.com profile] debchan (Ensemble, NC-17) Buffy dies during "Prophecy Girl". Permanently. And though Willow still manages to close the Hellmouth, it's not such a good news...
Thing that I love the most about this extremely dark story is that it doesn't use the obvious way to bring hell to Sunnydale (that would be Master rising). It choses more subtle path, based on character's natural urges, flaws and insecurities - and that's much more scary.

1) Beer Good Foamy wrote a crossover between Buffy and Welcome to Night Vale Radio Silence that outdoes even the usual awesomeness of a Beer Good story.
The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the crisscrossing, interlocking, violently conflicting paths of other equally righteous men. Welcome to Night Vale.

All of these are pre-2013 postings. I just first discovered them recently.

1) The Butterfingers G. D. I. Stark Guide to Problem Solving by Epiphanyx7
Avengers verse
Starks' A. I. bots are building another bot. Adorable story.

So in the end there always ends up being some sort of tiny, insignificant anomaly --- not a mistake, or anything. Just a... a loophole, in the programming parameters. This line totally reminds me of a plotline from Freefall, and you can see another example of robots creating robots in Girl Genius.

The rest of the recs are busy wondering: if it's still the Day of the Dead, why aren't there more zombies skulking about ...  )

For my very first post to this community I wanted to list some of my favorite Buffyverse meta essays of the year. Fiction seems to be the overwhelming fan vehicle of choice, at least here on LJ/DW, but it was meta essays that pulled me into this fandom. These are by no means "the best" of the year (my full list would be closer to 10 or 11 essays), but represent some that are my touchstones for this 'verse and it's fandom:

"Rules of Engagement: Violence and Hyperreality in the Buffyverse"  by  [livejournal.com profile] lostboy_lj   may be my "if you only read one meta from 2012" choice. Why Buffy and Spike's relationship in S6 is not directly analogous to abusive relationships in RL, using "Smashed" as it's focal point.

"Buffy, the Vampire Slayer vs Buffy the Vampire Slayer"  by  [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy.   Most post-modernist thinky-thoughts; how the show's title represents the central problem of the narrative for it's titular protagonist, and how Buffy resolves her dilemma in "Chosen".

"Word of Willow: "Witch", Mirrors, and Mommy Issues"  by  [livejournal.com profile] local_max .   What I hope to be the first of several Willow-centric essays from someone who has plumbed the depths of Willow's character more thoroughly and compassionately than any fan I know of.

"Warren Mears"  by  [livejournal.com profile] itsnotmymind .   Draws parallels between Warren, Faith and Spike, how they mirror, intertwine and intersect thematically and within the story itself, and what they represent re: Buffy's psychology. Wonderfully complex.

"Where Did I Go? A Farewell to the Buffybot"   by  [livejournal.com profile] mcjulie .   One of the few essays I've seen in these parts about one of the Buffyverse's most memorable characters. (While I'm here, I'll note that mcjulie has also taken on the awesome task of continuing the   "Episode Polls"   and discussion where [personal profile] gabrielleabelle  left off, starting with S5's  "Tough Love".  Especially recommended is her poll and meta commentary on "The Gift".)

2011 was a great year for Spander fics. I discovered [livejournal.com profile] baudown this year. Her writing is super, her character voices are super, and her fics are always a joy to read. Here are five fics I've read and enjoyed of hers.

1) Nothing the Same by [livejournal.com profile] orchidluv: Wow! Seriously, wow!! A long, thrilling epic! It's a rewrite of BtVS from S1 in which Jesse's death makes Xander curious about vampires. He doubts what Giles told him about Jesse being gone and replaced by a monster and starts studying and researching about vampires. The best part about this fic is how complex the characters are. There's no character bashing, just character flaws getting the best of characters, and it's nice reading the story from different, unreliable point of views. If you're a Spander fan and haven't read this, then shame on you. If you're not a Spander fan, then this is the story I recommend for you.

The fic is really long and written in four books. The link above is for book 1. And here are the links for the next books: Book 2, Book 3, and Book 4.

Note: The fic was first written in 2007 and completed in 2010. The second half of Book 4 was written in 2010.
