Coming in under the wire for this one, so descriptions are going to be on the terse side.

1.  They Make Solitude and Call it Peace by Mosca. Buffy/Willow, PG-13 Lovely look at post-Chosen Buffy and Willow. Terrific dialogue between the two on matters both weighty and frivolous.

LJ coms are exactly that: communities. Places where we come together to share the fandom with people who are on our friends list and people who are not. Without communities, I would not have met a lot of wonderful people on LJ. I want to give a shout out to five +1 communities that brought fandom to our little corner of the world in 2016. (I simply couldn’t limit the list to five, so I’ve added a bonus.) This is also an expression of gratitude to the moderators of all communities who give of their time to create a fandom experience for the rest of us.

[livejournal.com profile] sb_fag_ends
Created in August 2010, this community promotes Spike/Buffy fanfic and meta up to 1,000 words in length (as well as limited postings of artwork). It's a great concept, especially for those of us who really enjoy the opportunity to participate in brief spurts. The community is moderated by [livejournal.com profile] bogwitch, [livejournal.com profile] quinara, and [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight. I have to say their annual Halloween challenge has been one of the highlights of my fandom year. As of the end of 2016, the community will sadly no longer have active mods, but it remains open for anyone who wants to showcase their work. Thank you for your contribution to the fandom!

Open on Sunday hasn’t had a post since July. As a memorial, I found five great - I went through a bunch but I didn’t read them all -  drabbles written for an Open on Sunday prompt.

1. [livejournal.com profile] punch_kicker15’s If You Are What You Say You Are because I’m a sucker for a happy ending.

2. [livejournal.com profile] romanyg’s Woman of Property because I’m also a sucker for angst

3. [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy’s Advant Gardener because no one writes humor like Beer Good Foamy

4. [livejournal.com profile] baudown’s Parlour Games because awesome Spander

5. [livejournal.com profile] nihilistbear’s Kiss from “Once More With Feeling” because ouch!

And while I’m here, the first prompt since April has recently been posted at Giles Shorts. Go. Write.

So the fandom isn't as active as it once was, but there are still communities keeping up the good work. Here are a few challenge responses I liked this year.

[livejournal.com profile] spook_me
Unwrapping by [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni. Spike has a rare birthday gift for Dru. She's very happy with it, especially as it's the last one. Spike/Dru.

Since [livejournal.com profile] rebcake stole part of my list (stole, I tell you!) as I was writing this, I had to modify it some.  In no particular order, here are five new contributors to fandom for whom I will drop whatever I'm doing and check out their latest work:

[livejournal.com profile] lady_sybyl, also known elsewhere as Dactylgirl and TerrusDacktellus (and SoulfulSpiketheKiller on Tumblr).  Dactylgirl gives good comic!fic, delivering wonderfully fun, in character, perceptive, touching, sometimes smutty, stories.  They are always well-written, and her character voices are amazing.  I highly recommend her Lost Continent series (Spuffy, S10).  She's also shown she can do angsty, serious storytelling in one of my new, personal all-time favorite fics: Empty Hearts and Heavy Hands (S5, Spuffy).  Even if Spuffy is not your favorite pairing, check that one out.  You won't be disappointed.

I love seasonal coms, don’t you? It gives everyone a reason to show off their best work. Here are five of my favorite seasonal com posts in 2015:

Lies My Lover Told Me
fiction posted by [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight at [livejournal.com profile] summer_of_giles
Post-Chosen, Giles and Olivia meet and talk about then and now. The conversation goes in a direction that is not what Giles expected. As usual with shapinglight’s work, the characters are realistic and the dialogue is searing and brilliant.

Five banners that are works of art in their own right (by other talented fan artists) in no particular order. The banners shown here are ones I admired and have influenced me as an artist whether or not I participated in the individual challenges. Check out the banners AND the winning icons that adorn them at the links below:

By [livejournal.com profile] comlodge:

Challenge 22 "A Room Full of Empty" (April)

Challenge 26 "The Same...but Different" (July)

Challenge 36 "Ye Olde Vampyre Gang" (December)

Janice's banners are very specific to the individual challenge themes and have a particular theatrical quality to them, a mise en scene suggestive of stage sets. Challenge 22 is moody and atmospheric; 26 and 36's banners are lush, densely layered, evocative of Victorian drawing rooms and vintage photographs gently fading in an attic trunk. I love her fearless use of textures to "degrade" the images in beautiful ways.

By [livejournal.com profile] tempertemper:

Challenge 32 "It Takes Two to Tango" (October)

Challenge 35 "Least Favorite Eps" (November)

Challenge 32's banners are typical of what I think of when I think of Temper's "style" (also typified by her own first place winning icon): warm, soft and inviting glow, muted color palatte. #35's are entirely different; each banner is carefully and precisely coordinanted to the individual icons in terms of colors, and textures so that they seem to be organic extensions of the icons themselves. Manage to be both eye-popping and understated at the same time. The banner for [livejournal.com profile] rua1412's first place winner is particularly stunning.

Bonus by [livejournal.com profile] starry_night

Challenge 23 "Simplicity, It Works for Me" (May)

I am color-matching's bitch. No apologies. Deal with it, kids. The background starry chose resembles a watercolor painting in the rain, soaking the paper. "Pastels" are difficult to pull off without being too-sweet but these hit the spot, matched to their respective icons; while a subtle mix of fonts keeps things interesting without pulling focus..

2014's Edgar Allen Poe titles Halloween Challenge on [livejournal.com profile] sb_fag_ends resulted in a huge creative surge on the comm. Some really wonderful ficlets and drabbles were posted, and some didn't (IMO) get nearly as much feedback as they deserved.

No knowledge of Poe's work is required to appreciate them.

Here are five by [livejournal.com profile] drizzlydaze, and believe me it was really hard to pick just five.

All rated PG.

Life. Set during the BtVS season 5/6 hiatus. 266 words. For the prompt: Ligeia.

My last list, which I'm doing now because I may be away this weekend.

Five fannish things I really enjoyed in 2013, in no particular order.

First, some wonderful meta from [livejournal.com profile] lostboy_lj, The Monomythology of Buffy. Buffy on Campbell's 'classic' hero's journey, all explained in pretty pictures. Brilliant!

Thought I'd better get this in quick before the comm closes. Again, no unifying theme, just five Buffyverse things I enjoyed in 2012.

Redemption - Scattered Thoughts by [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy. Meta that I don't think has been recced yet, but even if it has, can't be recced often enough IMO (which also applies to BGF's masterful Buffy, the Vampire Slayer vs Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

I'm going to limit this to LJ or DW communities, and it will probably be pretty Spuffy-centric (because that's how I roll), but these communities and the mods who give up their time to keep them active, deserve attention.

[livejournal.com profile] sb_fag_ends = Don't know what I can say about this amazing place that I haven't said before, but if you don't read there, you are really missing out. For whatever reason, almost everything posted there is original, smart, gripping in some way (you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll cringe), and well written. They are all short ficlets (although some can be strung together as stand-alone chapters that form a "verse"), so a great place to go for a quick read to fill some time. You may also discover some authors you didn't know about.

[livejournal.com profile] sb_ashtray - for fics that got too long for sb_fag_ends, or were finished too late for that week's prompts, or that otherwise weren't suited for that community. The same sort of quality, because it's mostly the same authors or others just as good.

http://seasonal-spuffy.dreamwidth.org/ - This wonderful community just keeps going. There's always someone willing to step up and be that round's mod. So far, so good. The main community is now on DW, but is easily accessed by LJ users. Round Fifteen just finished before the holidays.

[livejournal.com profile] fantas_magoria - A wonderful archive of fics written for every season of BtVS. They are on season 7 now, so I don't know where it will go from there, but the listing of fics already posted or linked to should keep anyone busy reading for years! Each round is a different episode and any fics that take place in the episode, or take off from that episode are eligible.

Lastly, [livejournal.com profile] seeking_spike - a community to help you locate fics, art work, etc you may have lost track of and want to reread.***Despite the Spike-centric name for this community, it's actually for any and all of the characters and/or ships in the Buffyverse. :) It is not a rec community, but one to help readers locate things they've already seen somewhere.

Websites and communities that can "help" you get a project completed. In no particular order :

Riters_r_us : This community is intended as a resource for fan fic writers, betas and anyone else interested in improving their writing. Great place for discussions on grammar, spelling, etc.

BtVS_Award_Info : a community that has been created so that people can stay aprised of nomination openings and closings and the current status of Buffy based awards sites. The website currently comprises 17 current websites, and a listing of sites on hiatus.

The Angel and Spike timeline : confused about what happened when - look no further.

The Buffy and Angel Dialogue Database : one stop for all your dialogue needs.

Okay, here we go. Three fics that got Slay Me Awards in 2010 and one that didn’t, but could have. (Considering how many ficlets fit into that category, I could probably do another whole post. LOL) And one rec for a community that was chock full of wonderful fic.

West of the Moon, East of the Sun by KnifeEdge – a new writer to our fandom, she took us all by happy surprise with her long, plotty Spuffy fic. Based on a fairytale format, it sucks you in and keeps you coming back for more. She had me at “hello”, or, well, okay, the minute Buffy woke up in that dark room with only a bed and a vampire. If you think that means smutty pwpw fic, you are oh, so very wrong! You can find it here

1) Episode Notes by [livejournal.com profile] 2maggie2, Strudel and [livejournal.com profile] local_max: These episode notes are a joy to read.
