Five favorite Buffyverse stories, in no particular order :

1. OK, technically this isn't really a story however... The Art Project by [personal profile] st_salieri.

2. Flight to Egypt , Spike by [profile] powerofthebook.

3. Conundrum , William/Drusilla by [personal profile] rebcake.

4. 14 Forever , Random Slayer by [personal profile] perletwo

5. Nightswimming , Spike/Buffy by [profile] calove.

And while I'm at it let me put in a shout out for the very much missed, Open on Sunday , a source for many of the best Buffyverse works.

Let's wrack up those negative emotions, shall we?

1. Twelfth Sister: The Council's always known kill one Slayer you get a new one, but now they realize they can kill one Slayer and revive her. It's so dark but so beautifully written. I just love this story. Here's a snippet: "Because, gentleman," he replied, his voice now tinged with a hint of acid, "why should we simply settle for another Kendra? Why should we settle for just one, when we could have a dozen? When we could have a hundred?"

2. Falling Like Icarus: Oh, this is so sad. I don't want to give anything away so I'll just say Xander/Anya and share the summary: She'd come so close to the sun, to joy, but now her wings are melting and she's falling, like Icarus. Xander and Anya's world is shattered with just one word.

3. Extinction: A drabble from Open on Sunday. I'm not sure anything I say here could do it justice. Powerful.

4. Mission Accomplished: Poignant. The unexpected difficulty of a Watcher's last duty to his Slayer. I adore the juxtaposition of the explanation of this terrible duty in Watcher training vs. the reality of having to face it.

5. Blackout: A dying Xander brings his daughter to Spike and Angel. Every time I read this - every time - I cry at the end. This story takes a tragic even and makes it heartwarming.

Let's meet some Slayers we didn't see in the series
  1. Geometry of Chance: Only Ethan could get his pocket picked and end up with a Slayer. I adore Frankie and any story that makes Ethan care, well, what can I say, I'm a sucker for that sort of thing.
  2. Chosen: Seven dark vignettes. They are amazing.
  3. Six Thousand Miles: Another dark one. Hard to say anything about this one because spoilers.
  4. Theses on a Philosophy of Power: I love this look at how unaware Watchers can be. It's set during the Bolshevik Revolution and the Slayer's a Red.
  5. Dreadful Duty: I still can't believe I'm convinced by George and Lydia Wickham as a Watcher and Slayer pair.

China Girl from Poetry by William Pratt - VERSUS by SPIKE by MissLuci (whole chapter rated R but poem is not sexual or otherwise graphic)
MissLuci wrote a whole multichapter story full of Spike's poems and Buffy's reactions to them!! This poem is about Spike killing Xin Rong, written from the perspective of pre-series soulless Spike. Note that the prose section at the bottom of the chapter is rated R for Spuffy smut.

From the department of hyperspecific Top 5 categories: my beta does some damn fine work, and their most ingenious stories tend to fly under the radar.
In this post: Olivia/Jhiera, Anya/Kennedy, Nikki Wood/Xin Rong, Darla/Willow (but neither of them soulless), and Riley/Buffy (but Riley meant it when she said she's a lesbian).

These were some of the first fics that I read, back in about 2008. And I still remember each of them.

You Think She's An Open Book (but you don't know which page to turn to), by Spuffyduds

This is a post-apocalyptic fic about Lorne (still alive) and Fred (long dead). It made me cry.

Mission Accomplished, by Beer_Good_Foamy

Giles, dealing with the aftermath of Buffy's death, and the fact he always knew it was coming.

The Chosen Series, by Snowpuppies

A series of short ficlets, inspired by Mission Accomplished, each featuring a different Watcher.

Lilies, by Snowpuppies

An AU of the end of season 5, with much grief.

I Don't Know Where I'll Be Tonight, But I'll Always Tell You Where I Am, by Spuffyduds

Comparatively light-hearted for this list. Faith and Wes, post-series, becoming friends.

As far as I'm aware, the authors on this list posted their first Buffyverse work this year (though I'm not necessarily linking their first work, and also it might be a one-off in between their works for other fandoms).

Beautiful by zabjade (G, 500 words)
Sweet and happy.
"She supposed she should be at some fancy, stuffy restaurant for her birthday, considering her age, but she loved this little dance club they’d found. They played “retro” (how weird was that, the music of her youth being retro now?) music that you could really dance to, both slow and fast."

Little Sister by Barb C (@rahirah) (T, 34,352 words)
featuring retirement, moisturizer, and adventures. It's been recced here before, by feliciacraft, for action-packed amazingness and technical feats of prose. I also really love the way the conflict is resolved. (And there, I told myself not to rec Barbverse because everyone already knows to read the Barbverse, but two recs snuck through anyway.)
"I'm only fifty-four. Isn't that too young to be old? I mean, God, Jess is only nine! Didn't the baby boomers pass a federal statute against being a grandmother before your own kids are all in their teens?"

One of our Classic Fandom treasures is [livejournal.com profile] hello_spikey, whose secret identity includes being an award-winning professional speculative fiction writer. Shhhh. We had her first!

While not all of her stories are on AO3 yet, many are. Versatility is her hallmark. I daresay that among her works there is a story with a pairing, a rating, a kink, or a mood to suit the tastes of any Buffyverse fic fan. Here is a brief selection of a very few of my personal favorites, in ascending order of length:

Once More, With Lorne (Teen, 1624 words)
Lorne investigates reports of an entire town bursting into song.

I love sparkling dialog, but a story without it can feel timeless. Most of these are about Slayers we haven't met before, but are fascinating in their own right. Links are to AO3, when possible.

The Queen, The Soldier by [personal profile] beer_good_foamy (PG, Gen)
Once upon a time, a long long time ago, there was a town. And in the town was a girl, who didn't want to die. The story of a slayer who did things differently when faced with a people-eating giant.

I think it’s fair to say that most Xander writers have tried their hand at a Xander in Africa fic at one point or another. (I know I have…) A number of them came from the scatterlings and orphanages ficathon back in 2006, and it would be easy to just point to all the stories there, but for the sake of spreading the love, I’ve chosen a couple from there and the rest from elsewhere on the interwebs

All Who Wander by Aeneas is a wonderful example of the genre. Xander goes to Libya searching for slayers. Things go downhill, fast! This story has got angst up the wazoo, but it’s also aching beautiful and if you haven’t read it, go do so, now! BTW, this is in three parts - start with part on the bottom tag - Libya)
(As an aside, but not part of this list, there’s also a sequel in which Buffy follows in Xander’s footsteps - Outpost. It’s equally lovely and I live in hope at some point it becomes more than a one-shot - a girl can dream!)

I struggled to get this list down to five entries. So many authors have inserted incredible characters into the Buffyverse. I hope you enjoy these five ... although actually there are more than five characters because the last story has a number of originals.

Title: Business as Usual
Creator’s Name: Lilachigh
Agnes Pringle, yes! A sweet middle-aged spinster with a tea shop in an English cathedral city who was Turned on a trip to America, sets up shop in Sunnyvale. She has a bit of a thing for Spike. Don’t we all.

1. Samantha Winning’s Asylum - Buffy, Faith, and Cordelia are in a mental institution and something’s really wrong in a horror movie kind of a way. I’m very, very disappointed this isn’t a real movie even though it’d be too scary for me to watch with the sound on.

2. Quinara's in the dark / sometimes / i hear you gives a great feel of Spike's insane in the high-school basement PoV.

3. Losing Your Memory by Tay Marie has me in tears each time I watch.

4. Aycheb's Scarlet Ribbons: Yeah, I apologize for inflicing this on you right after Losing Your Memory. Also, I think it's awesome she quoted Alice Sheldon (aka James Tiptree Jr.).

Gently Down the Stream by [livejournal.com profile] shadowscast (Ensemble, with some Buffy/Spike, PG-13). Here's Buffy's life in a nutshell: dead mom, dead-beat dad, dead end job, dependent sister. She's pulling double shifts at the Double Meat Palace to make ends meet.
And yet, she's actually pretty happy! She's got supportive friends and a sexy English boyfriend. Her life is full of love, and frankly after that accident last year and the coma, she's grateful just to be alive.

Since my last list was Willow-centric, I thought I should post a list of five fics I love which don't feature her (I know... didn't think I read anything like that, did you? Surprise!)

1) For My Pain, A World of Sighs (Spike/Xander) by [livejournal.com profile] baudown: This is an exquisitely-wrought cold-chill of a tale - an AU where Spike arrives in Sunnydale earlier than we see in canon... and alone. This is the Spike who rained death and destruction in Europe in all his merciless glory and I am awed anew every time I read this story.

We had some excellent long fics in 2012, because our fandom is full of talented people. Many of those fics have been mentioned on other lists. Here are some for which I am (patiently) awaiting updates.

Safeverse by [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight (Spike/Giles with plot) NC17
A Season 7 Giles juggles a chipped/souled/triggered Spike, a secretive and hostile Council, and the Potential Slayers who depend on him. It’s even harder when The First keeps popping up wearing the face of his allies. 8 chapters posted.

Just five 100-word flashes of brilliance.

Escape by [livejournal.com profile] garnigal. A Slayer and a Watcher, as things have always been.

Learning Curve by [livejournal.com profile] gilescandy. There really are no controlled circumstances in Sunnydale.

(Not) In Her Element by [livejournal.com profile] readerjane. In Sunnydale, the jump-rope songs teach self-defense.

Someone by [livejournal.com profile] a2zmom. She is no one.

In Which Owl Discovers An Office Key In His File by [livejournal.com profile] graycardinal. Come on. It's a Winnie The Pooh crossover, what else do you want?

And a bonus, since I'm partly responsible for it but didn't actually write it:
Substitute by [livejournal.com profile] speakr2customrs. Well, it's one way to fix "The Gift"...
[identity profile] velvetwhip.livejournal.com
These are five stories which don't feature popular ships and so might have flown under your radar. Give them a chance, because they're really worth reading!

1) Le Petit Mort (First Slayer/OFC; NC-17) by [livejournal.com profile] snogged - I realize that the First Slayer isn't the most well known of Buffyverse denizens, but this ficlet features her in the most intriguing way. An angsty-sexy take on the beginnings of a primal battle that will surely satisfy.

Some writers just kept on bringing the good stuff in 2012, and [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni is one of the chief among them. Whether long or short, her work is always varied and wonderful. Here are five of my favourites of her short fics. The first one, I only read for the first time a minute ago.

Seasons Keep On Marching by bruttimabuoni - Just before Chosen, someone offers Giles a choice. He tries to choose wisely. But taking anything from Wolfram & Hart has consequences, no matter how wisely you choose. More people than just Giles will share those consequences, for good or ill. (Teen And Up Audiences, Giles/Lilah)
