Let's wrack up those negative emotions, shall we?

1. Twelfth Sister: The Council's always known kill one Slayer you get a new one, but now they realize they can kill one Slayer and revive her. It's so dark but so beautifully written. I just love this story. Here's a snippet: "Because, gentleman," he replied, his voice now tinged with a hint of acid, "why should we simply settle for another Kendra? Why should we settle for just one, when we could have a dozen? When we could have a hundred?"

2. Falling Like Icarus: Oh, this is so sad. I don't want to give anything away so I'll just say Xander/Anya and share the summary: She'd come so close to the sun, to joy, but now her wings are melting and she's falling, like Icarus. Xander and Anya's world is shattered with just one word.

3. Extinction: A drabble from Open on Sunday. I'm not sure anything I say here could do it justice. Powerful.

4. Mission Accomplished: Poignant. The unexpected difficulty of a Watcher's last duty to his Slayer. I adore the juxtaposition of the explanation of this terrible duty in Watcher training vs. the reality of having to face it.

5. Blackout: A dying Xander brings his daughter to Spike and Angel. Every time I read this - every time - I cry at the end. This story takes a tragic even and makes it heartwarming.

This list became unexpectedly difficult when two of the five recs I had prepped ended up linking to deleted accounts! That seems a high percentage in less than a year?

1) Five People Whose Loan Applications Were Approved At Sunnydale Securities Bank (And One Whose Wasn't) by beer_good_foamy. "So how does Sunnydale… work, exactly? Well, it's a long and complex story of corruption and denial, but let's check in with one of the cogs that make the wheels spin. Remember the loan officer who turned Buffy down in "Flooded"...? Here's his Sunnydale story in six installments, occasionally interacting with the main storyline." The devil is in the details, alright.

[personal profile] thenewbuzwuzz is a staple of the online BtVS fandom. She not only participates here each year, but helps run Seasonal Spuffy and the Sunnydale Herald. But one of her greatest contributions to the fandom, in my opinion, is her advocacy for poetry as a fanwork medium. I certainly never would have tried it if it hadn't been for her inspiration. Here are a few of my favorite buzwuzz poems.

The Limericked Adventures of Bob the Hellmouth Cop
This was the poem that started it all for me. It was the winner of a contest on the now sadly defunct Sunnydale Fanfic Club podcast and her episode opened my eyes to the potential of fandom poetry. (Actually, the podcast wound up introducing us both to each other's work, eventually leading to our ongoing beta exchange.)

The poem itself is priceless. Using the limerick format to explore the POV of a clueless Sunnydale cop is just too good. I mean, consider this stanza:

We've now moved into the final days of our session and are focusing on recs from 2019! To kick us off, here are some of mine:

No. 6 Buffy/Angel dots by electric_heart. I thought the style was snazzy!

Buffy to finish out 2016 by artofjph. I liked the sort of jagged look that suited Buffy's inner state.

P.O.T.D. by Twinkles. Painted Illyria and Fred. What I really liked about this was the way the artist captured Fred's smile so well.

No. 17 Faith in battle by pureimagination. I quite liked this close up of her, it really gets across action in a close up.

Daddy Angel by pureimagination. Not as many icons out there of Angel cradling a baby even though he did so quite a few times and there's so many kidfics out there!

There is no particular theme here, just five random recs from years gone by.

In Mine Eyes Dazzle by Victoria P (musesfool) Xander visits Angel after the events in Your Welcome. This is short, lovely and makes my heart ache in the best way.

In my FFN forays, I have been noticing some of the other poetry by [fanfiction.net profile] cagd (who is represented in @stultiloquentia's Jossverse Poetry Masterlist with one poem under her LJ name [livejournal.com profile] trixiefatcat ). cagd has become easily one of my favorite Buffy poets. She has written lots of beautiful free verse; what I've read so far tends to center on the Fanged Four, especially on Spike's platonic relationships. These poems go deep into characterization, and they give me all of the feels.

Lunch Money (Spike&Dawn, T)
Broken Toys (Liam, Drusilla, William, T)
Drusilla's Tears (Drusilla, Spike, T)
Numb in Her Forgiveness (Spike&Joyce, T)
Wild Roses on a Grave (Spike&Tara, T)
[identity profile] sparrow2000.livejournal.com
There is no particular theme that connects these apart from that they're all pretty short and do their job very well.

The Watcher’s Mistress by elisi is a great Buffy/Dr Who ficlet in which Giles and Missy find themselves compatible. This is a lovely idea, nicely executed.

So okay, I tried hard to come up with a theme and that was taking too long so I decided to just post a list of 5 classic stories I go back to and read over and over again. There's fluff and angst and absolutely no thematic or tonal connection between any of these stories - except my love.

1) The Key to Her... Heart? by Purplefeen: What do you get when you mix a witch in a dire predicament, two horny vampires, some alcohol, overcomplicated excuses and schemes, and the Scooby Gang? Well, what you get here is a delightfully sexy, fun-filled romp featuring Willow, Spike, Angel, and a lot of naughtiness. Guaranteed to bring you joy... if you're over 18, that is. This one is NOT for the kiddies.

So here's a bit of many characters, fandoms, and working on the formats ;)

1) Five Vampires Dr. Horrible Never Met by snowpuppies. Dr. Horrible has a plan to become more evil. Unfortunately, he needs the help of a vampire.

2) Foreign Spices May Disagree With You by AnonEhouse. Saffron's good at conning but some people have been running a way longer game.

3) Nine Rules for Living in a Broken World by Wisdom Eagle. Various crossovers set in the Dark Angel universe, though my favorite of these is II. Dance with your head held high with Original Cindy and Gunn.

4) I Hate You by double_dutchess. Sometimes it isn't a thin line, it's just hate between vampires.

5) The Director Will See You Now by toucanpie. What if SHIELD were responsible for more than just chasing down and sorting out the unexplainable? What if the fate of the world rested in their hands? (The Cabin in the Woods fusion).

A continuation of sorts from my previous post: more icons, all from various [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness challenges during the year excluding Challenge 39 covered in my previous post. Once again, verbiage will be kept to a minimum so the art can do the talking; and artists listed in alphabetical order by name.  (Otherwise I'd never get done here.)

I have set a restriction on myself for these posts: To list the artists only once within each post (so no duplicates, This was a helluva lot harder than I realized when you've got artists so fantastically talented and prolific like [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri, [livejournal.com profile] teragramm and [livejournal.com profile] tempertemper.  Complicating things is the fact that [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness seems to have a smaller pool of regular participants than some other comms. (But don't quote me on that):

1) Drusilla by [livejournal.com profile] emmatheslayer for Challenge 57 (November)
BTW, I've seen other icons use this framing device and even this exact texture since then, but none so effectively.

2) Buffy IWRY (It Hurts Every Day) by [livejournal.com profile] muirthemne for Challenge 47 (June)
One of her only icons that round that did not take home a prize is the one that is my favorite. Go figure

3) Dawn by [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri for Challenge 40 (March)
Her Dawn set for [livejournal.com profile] btvsats20in20 was also superb. It's a departure from the style she's established this year of deep shadows.

4) Angel heart graffiti by [livejournal.com profile] tempertemper for Challenge 38 (January)
Sinister, witty and visually striking.

5) Buffy (A Father's Love) by [livejournal.com profile] teragramm for Challenge 51 (August)
In all honesty and with all due respect to the other wonderful artists I adore, this icon is probably in my top 5 for the entire year, if I was really truly forced to pare it down.

Okay, so I was reading a coffee story posted in 2015, which will be recommended in the January BtVS Top 5, and it reminded me of Lyl’s In Another Life. After the fall of Sunnydale, Willow is found wandering with amnesia. She settles in LA where she works as a barista and falls for Don Eppes from Numb3rs. The relationship just works so well and it’s adorable watching them fall for each other. Totally worksafe.

The rest of the recs are catching up on iZombie, which is surprisingly good so far. )

Five banners that are works of art in their own right (by other talented fan artists) in no particular order. The banners shown here are ones I admired and have influenced me as an artist whether or not I participated in the individual challenges. Check out the banners AND the winning icons that adorn them at the links below:

By [livejournal.com profile] comlodge:

Challenge 22 "A Room Full of Empty" (April)

Challenge 26 "The Same...but Different" (July)

Challenge 36 "Ye Olde Vampyre Gang" (December)

Janice's banners are very specific to the individual challenge themes and have a particular theatrical quality to them, a mise en scene suggestive of stage sets. Challenge 22 is moody and atmospheric; 26 and 36's banners are lush, densely layered, evocative of Victorian drawing rooms and vintage photographs gently fading in an attic trunk. I love her fearless use of textures to "degrade" the images in beautiful ways.

By [livejournal.com profile] tempertemper:

Challenge 32 "It Takes Two to Tango" (October)

Challenge 35 "Least Favorite Eps" (November)

Challenge 32's banners are typical of what I think of when I think of Temper's "style" (also typified by her own first place winning icon): warm, soft and inviting glow, muted color palatte. #35's are entirely different; each banner is carefully and precisely coordinanted to the individual icons in terms of colors, and textures so that they seem to be organic extensions of the icons themselves. Manage to be both eye-popping and understated at the same time. The banner for [livejournal.com profile] rua1412's first place winner is particularly stunning.

Bonus by [livejournal.com profile] starry_night

Challenge 23 "Simplicity, It Works for Me" (May)

I am color-matching's bitch. No apologies. Deal with it, kids. The background starry chose resembles a watercolor painting in the rain, soaking the paper. "Pastels" are difficult to pull off without being too-sweet but these hit the spot, matched to their respective icons; while a subtle mix of fonts keeps things interesting without pulling focus..

After last year's Top 5, I decided I'd keep track of stories I liked so I'd have tons of choices when making my list. I October, when I was going through my list of fanfic faves, I found I had enough for one set of five stories written in 2015. Since then I've come up with another seven. I have to conclude I could have been paying better attention in the earlier part of 2014. For example, I just reread aadler's Maxima Culpa, and that totally would have been on my rec list if I'd been paying more attention.

1) Rahirah's Black Friday. I personally can't imagine shopping on Black Friday but Spike and Buffy do seem made for it.

The other four stories have a hand raised and are calling out "Oh, oh, Mr. Kotter. Mr. Kotter." )

[livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip is a talented writer, a supportive fandom cheerleader, and a force to be reckoned with. (I mean that with 110% sincerity. She rocks!) This year, [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip once again showed her talent and quality and I want to showcase five of my favorite works. She wrote plenty more besides, of course, and you should all put this woman on your to-read-now lists!

1) Discomforting - Willow/Spike (FRAO). In this story, Willow and Spike struggle to live life without Buffy. [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip captures the angst, the internal struggles of both characters. She is able to make this pairing seem believable, and judging from the comments, she was able to entrance readers who normally don't read Spike/Willow pairings. She also writes what could be one of the steamiest sex scenes ever. Yum!

I think of livejournal as my fanfic center of the universe, but branching out from LJ can be rewarding as well. Fanfiction.net had many great stories posted in 2013. Here are five great stories from there (that weren't also posted to LJ as far as I know.)

1) The Butterfingers G. D. I. Stark Guide to Problem Solving by Epiphanyx7
Avengers verse
Starks' A. I. bots are building another bot. Adorable story.

So in the end there always ends up being some sort of tiny, insignificant anomaly --- not a mistake, or anything. Just a... a loophole, in the programming parameters. This line totally reminds me of a plotline from Freefall, and you can see another example of robots creating robots in Girl Genius.

All of these are either part of a series or a rec for the series as a whole.

1) Of Old Mystics by omphalos and Wolfling: Giles/Ethan - Giles, now head of the Council, rescues Ethan from the Initiative only to learn that they are a bonded pair, Order and Chaos, who must work together to save the world. One of my favorite go-back-to stories.

Okay, I had a bunch of stories left over and no great way to group them! They are still awesome stories.

1) Amnesia!Spike by Mahaliem
Whenever I rec it I get a bunch of people agreeing it's wonderful but I hardly ever see it recced

Spike nodded in agreement. He was just getting used to hearing his name. Whatever had happened earlier in the evening had wiped his memory clean. He didn’t know who he was, and to hear the lot of them talk, he didn’t know what he was, either. In fact, he only knew one thing about himself. Luckily it was a very important thing.

He had a really cool coat.
