These fics may or may not be new, but I've found them in the past year.

Not Another Teen Massacre! by Yellow Caballero - Buffy comes to a Sunnydale where the kids already know how to save themselves, and they just might save her too.

Sunset by The Eclectic Bookworm - "Passions" but Jenny's pregnant.

Ask the Things You Shouldn't Mis0s by Punch Kicker 15 - Willow's spell lets MIss Kitty Fantastico understand human speech. Humans are complicated.

The Girl Who Courted Death by Off Your Bird - I'm giving you the author's summary 'cause it's just that good: Due to a misfortune of genetics, Buffy is never Called as a Slayer. Instead, she grows up in L.A. with a different set of challenges and trials, unaware of the supernatural world. That is, until a chance encounter with the Slayer of Slayers changes her life—and everything afterward—forever.

The Power of Voodoo by Lucid Screamer - Xander, who dressed as the Goblin King for Halloween, is creating a labyrinth in Sunnydale. WiP that's going in a very interesting direction.

[livejournal.com profile] summer_of_giles is a lovely sandbox to play in every year and to enjoy some wonderful creativity. Here are five fics from SoG I enjoyed this year. (There's a lot more there than just these five, so go over to the comm and have an amble through all the great work.)

The Mirror Broke (But All My Friends Were Laughing) by 23Murasaki. I’m a sucker for a well written AU and this one is lovely. Randall lives post Eyghon and Giles’ life takes a different turn. This is excellently done.

When I discovered fandom and fic back in the early 2000's, there are some stories that stood out because they made me realise just how wonderfully malleable canon could be in the right hands. That realisation expanded my universe! :)

I’ve recced Te’s stories many times before, but my love for her stuff bears repeating. Post Grad series blew my tiny, sheltered mind when I read it early on in my adventures in fandom. It made me understand the power of ‘what if’. This is Spike/Xander, plot, porn and so much ‘oh my goodness’ that it makes my eyes cross just thinking about it.

More goodies this way... )

If That Mockingbird Won't Sing by Doyle. Last year I was sent a pointer to this fic that I think has been recced here before, but it is a wonderfully creepy contribution to the season!

Wild and Wonderful by solstice. Recced at an earlier Top 5 session, I read this earlier this year and found it a delightful ride of Dawn and Spike on a road trip during the S2/S3 hiatus. It's always fun to see stories imagined of the Dawnverse and I thought Dawn was a convincing kid. Bonus, the maps on each chapter showing their route.

Rewritten by TheSigyn. Another story recced here, "A magic crystal is kicked aside rather than shattered, and an old world is closed behind. How do you move forward in a life without a history? And what if your history isn’t what you thought it was?" I quite liked the ending which took a different approach from many a fanfic in having it both ways, but also in hinting at the cost of happiness no matter how it's achieved. Read more... )

Five Spuffy Stories with human Spike. Some of these are AH and some are with Buffy as the slayer but all have a human Spike. (Some of these stories might be on sites where you have to be a member to access the story.)

1. He Came With the House by Cryptwarmer. All human.
When Buffy rents the house of her favorite celebrity to share a weekend getaway with her sister, she's surprised to find the previous tenant hasn't completely vacated it. Spike turning over a new leaf has sworn off cigarettes and young women but a chance encounter with a determined miracle seeker reminds him that happiness is about more than cutting unhealthy things out of your life; it's about having the bravery to let good things in.

A Touch of Her Style
by myrabeth

Author's summary: Season 2, but with a different pre-series history. Robin Wood moves to Sunnydale to back up Buffy in her on-going battles with Drusilla. But when Buffy's romance with Angel takes a dark and dangerous turn, Robin determines his assistance won't be enough, and calls in some back up of his own: the old family friend who wears his mother's coat.

...or at least they never contradict canon... uh, BtVS canon, at any rate. This is a list of missing scene fic, until I run out of missing scene fic -- bear with me. Almost everything is Spuffy, and all of it is complete.

1. Pre-series: met a seriously scary Hungarian countess.

So okay, I tried hard to come up with a theme and that was taking too long so I decided to just post a list of 5 classic stories I go back to and read over and over again. There's fluff and angst and absolutely no thematic or tonal connection between any of these stories - except my love.

1) The Key to Her... Heart? by Purplefeen: What do you get when you mix a witch in a dire predicament, two horny vampires, some alcohol, overcomplicated excuses and schemes, and the Scooby Gang? Well, what you get here is a delightfully sexy, fun-filled romp featuring Willow, Spike, Angel, and a lot of naughtiness. Guaranteed to bring you joy... if you're over 18, that is. This one is NOT for the kiddies.

1. Dead!Giles 'verse by [livejournal.com profile] thea_bromine. Spike helps a dying Giles. Things get strange.

2. Of Old Mystics by Omphalos and [livejournal.com profile] wolfling. After the Council has fallen, Giles rescues Ethan from the Initiative only to learn that together they have a destiny. One of my long-time faves.

3. Responsible Adults by mydiera and [livejournal.com profile] sadbhyl. Giles/Ethan/Joyce. On the night Ethan would have pulled that Fyarl transformation spell on Giles, Joyce joins them. Things change from there.
Note: Sadbhyl wrote an essay: When You Girls Are Older You'll Understand (Rupert Giles/Joyce Summers/Ethan Rayne)

4. Bookends by [livejournal.com profile] il_mio_capitano. Buffy/Giles. Mmm, a story that brightens my day when a new chapter is posted.

5. In the Morning of the Magicians by [livejournal.com profile] indri. Ripper/Ethan back in the day. On of my favorite BtVS stories.
[identity profile] dragonyphoenix.livejournal.com
I'd love to say I'm so nice that I deliberately fulfilled [livejournal.com profile] red_satin_doll's request, but I just happend to have the same idea. Still, here you go.

1. A Nice Little Business by Lilachigh - Alice Pringle. Sounds like an OC, doesn’t she, but no, technically she fits this category. In the author’s words: the vampire lady referred to by Spike in The Replacement, when, sarcastically, he tells the Scoobies that he has been having a cup of tea with the lady who runs a tea-stall in the local garbage dump.

1. Samantha Winning’s Asylum - Buffy, Faith, and Cordelia are in a mental institution and something’s really wrong in a horror movie kind of a way. I’m very, very disappointed this isn’t a real movie even though it’d be too scary for me to watch with the sound on.
the recs are wondering if they could live in a Barbie world )
[identity profile] dragonyphoenix.livejournal.com
This may have been the most difficult category to select from.

I didn’t track stories I like back when I first got heavy into Spander so I ended up skimming through a whole list of Spander epics. I do find it interesting that the Spander stories I like now are ones I either did keep track of or did recall once I started reading them.

These aren't out-and-out porn but it is Spander so expect some sex, that is, don't count on them being completely worksafe but they mostly are.

  1. James and Wolfling’s Sands of Time - in season 1, Giles takes Xander in and his life changes completely. It’s just so great to see Xander have a wonderful life and then the courage it takes for him to save his friends in the end. This story rocks.

I'd tell you what the other recs are up to but I'm already blushing! )
[identity profile] dragonyphoenix.livejournal.com
So, sparrow2000, now you know why I've been reading - and commenting - on your stories lately! For the rest of you, some of the stories are dark - I'm looking at you Memento Mori - but I believe they're all worksafe.

  1. We could have quite a lively debate about which of sparrow2000’s stories are the best, but I believe any such list would have to include Magpie. The incredible writing, the detailed descriptions … I don’t know if I can describe what makes sparow2000’s stories so great, but this one has it all.

Sad That You Can't Hear by [livejournal.com profile] dragonyphoenix (G, ~500 words). After Jenny's death, Giles talks to her.

The road never travelled; for which we yearn by [livejournal.com profile] kerkevik_2014 (G, 100 words). During the Burning Man Jenny seeks the answers and gets more than she bargained for.

This Isn't A Kingdom by ilovehowyouletmefall (NC-17, ~35 000 words). It's beautifully crafted longfic set in Wishverse, where Rupert Giles and Jenny Calendar unexpectedly find themselves working with a group of students, struggling to hold back the forces of darkness.
Story is a bit dark, as you expect from the wishverse fic, but it's not hoplessly dark.

Lies My Lover Told Me
fiction posted by [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight at [livejournal.com profile] summer_of_giles
Post-Chosen, Giles and Olivia meet and talk about then and now. The conversation goes in a direction that is not what Giles expected. As usual with shapinglight’s work, the characters are realistic and the dialogue is searing and brilliant.

The [livejournal.com profile] sb_fag_ends Halloween Challenge happens in the last week of October. Participating writers compete to fill the most prompts with short Spuffy stories of 1,000 words or less. It’s actually more complicated, but I can never figure out the rules. The important thing is the results. Whimsical, eclectic and comedic themes expertly written. One of the most fun fandom events of the year. Here are just a few of my favorites:

Some favorite complete longfics from the past years.
Any bad English in summaries is mine and shouldn't be blamed on fic authors.

Gently Down the Stream by [livejournal.com profile] shadowscast (Ensemble, with some Buffy/Spike, PG-13). Here's Buffy's life in a nutshell: dead mom, dead-beat dad, dead end job, dependent sister. She's pulling double shifts at the Double Meat Palace to make ends meet.
And yet, she's actually pretty happy! She's got supportive friends and a sexy English boyfriend. Her life is full of love, and frankly after that accident last year and the coma, she's grateful just to be alive.
Oh, and the main point - it's NOT all-human AU.

Summary:"Against the tide we struggle with the skin we're in." Dawn, after.

Okay, here I am too! I wish to thank everyone who recommended other fics, especially the Spangel ones. I know some of them, since I did some time lurking the English fandom but saying nothing (Because I didn't know how to write), but it's really nice to discover other classics. It makes me feel part of the group.

So, my list: 5 fics with Spike as major character I love so much (There are too many Spike-centric fics in this fandom that I love and it's hard to pick just 5)

Beggars would Ride by [livejournal.com profile] wiseacress This is one of the first Spike/Angel fics I've ever read. It's painful, dark and gorgeously written. I love the dynamic between Angel and Spike and how they hurt each others. I'm a sucker for Spangel h/c.

19 Hours by Annie Sewell-Jennings. First English Spuffy fic. Just glorious. It's a post Chosen fic, it's Spike/Buffy-centric and there is a lot of glorious happy sex involved. If you love Spike and Buffy together you have to read this.

To Come Home To by [livejournal.com profile] snickfic Recently discovered and it's a series. Again with the Spuffy post-Chosen kinda happy place. This one is also about mpreg and believe me when I say that it's the greatest thing ever.

Stick Shift by [livejournal.com profile] stultiloquentia Spike. Buffy. Pegging. Hot. If you like hot Spuffy porn this is the thing for you.

A Raising in the Sun by [livejournal.com profile] rahirah I guess that everybody knows this one. It's actually my favorite part of the saga. I love it because it really feels S6-like and it's all Spike's POV and it's excellent.

Here are a few of my favorite Spike/Angel stories. Most of these contain explicit slash, none of them are workplace safe.

To Take You in - by Jessica Walker (aka Anonymous) This is a new twist on an old idea. Spike comes to Angel when he is chipped. But Jessica has a wonderful back story for Spike and Angel. The word Buffy is never mentioned, nor is Sunnydale. The story is told from Angel's POV, and the voice is excellent! http://www.fangedfour.com/fangs/fiction/anonymous.html

Time is the Fire in Which We Burn - I had to pick one story from Love that Dares, a website with all of Jenny's fiction. This is the first story in a long series. Her Spike/Angel fiction is hot, and her voices, including Wesley are spot on. I highly recommend all of her fiction. http://www.squashduck.com/ltd/spikeangelmain.htm

The Relevance of Spike - Author: stakeaclaim - "It was a big day. A hundred and twenty-five years. A quarter of the way through his second century and he’d decided today was the day it was all going to change" And it all does change, though not in ways anyone could expect. It's long, unpredictable and intricate, and it will keep you up all night. http://stakeaclaim.livejournal.com/714.html

You and I Collide - Author: spikesfool - it's dark, and painful. Spike crosses the line with Angel, and Angel makes him pay. Angel grows darker as he enjoys his payback. http://spring-spangel.livejournal.com/45738.html

Waking William - Author: Feliblanco. Spike has gotten his soul and he still has his chip. When he arrives in LA he is nearly dead from the abuse an attractive man who can't fight back, and who believes he deserves punishment, he has suffered. But the story goes off into some interesting directions beyond the h/c.

Any bad English and awkward phrasing in summaries is mine and shouldn't be blamed on fic authors.

Cicatrix by Teland & [livejournal.com profile] debchan (Ensemble, NC-17) Buffy dies during "Prophecy Girl". Permanently. And though Willow still manages to close the Hellmouth, it's not such a good news...
Thing that I love the most about this extremely dark story is that it doesn't use the obvious way to bring hell to Sunnydale (that would be Master rising). It choses more subtle path, based on character's natural urges, flaws and insecurities - and that's much more scary.

Five fannish "love letters" to my favorite underappreciated and overlooked friendship in the Buffyverse. Only two of these stories include Dawn "onscreen" but all of them mention her in some way, echoing S5's "Family". In a world defined by violence and certain death, Love is the most courageous possible choice, their gift to one another. Alphabetical by authors' pennames.

"Talk to Me (That's What Friends Are For)" by [livejournal.com profile] clockwork_hart1 - (Gen; Buffy, Tara, implied B/S & W/T; S6 episodic of "As You Were") Lucy's responded to my prompt for a Buffy and Tara friendship fic in which Tara "is a complex human being, NOT a perfect angel or saint". This lovely deleted scene that was everything I wanted and more. Buffy and Tara offer each other comfort, solace and support after Buffy breaks up with Spike and Tara reluctantly confesses her own anger towards Willow. Bonus: ([livejournal.com profile] comlodge's gorgeous banner for the story.)

"Re-Make, Re-Model" by [livejournal.com profile] elviswhataguy - (Buffy, Tara; implied B/T, early S6) Somewhat darker and more explictly "shippy" than "Warmth" (below); Buffy struggles with feelings of depression, anger, attraction to Tara as they try to bond with Tara via mundane things: schoolwork and soup. Deftly explores multiple similarities and parallels between the two characters that run deep beneath the apparent differences; an accurate portrayal of what depression actually feels like. (Credit, gratitude and a plate of warm home-made brownies to [livejournal.com profile] punch_kicker15 for introducing me to this author in their rec list.)

"Blurring the Lines" by [livejournal.com profile] kwritten - (Buffy/Tara; AU) The author's summary reads: AU- Tara doesn't die in "Seeing Red"; use of Key-canon. This is the one I'm having the hardest time describing (my brain is coming up with "Virginia Woolf?") Full disclosure: the first time I read this delicate, almost abstract open-ended prose-poem I didn't "get" it. It's not plotty in any traditional sense, it could be set almost anytime between the moment Buffy knows Dawn is the Key; it's probably S6 but could be the summer before S7. It feels like the seed of or a snippet from a true 'verse of it's own. MORE, PRETTY PLEASE? ETA: Kwritten just made my wish come true and added chapter two. *SQUEES*

"Take a Moment" by [livejournal.com profile] lanoyee - (Gen; Buffy, Dawn and ensemble, S6 post-Grave)  Buffy, Dawn, Giles and the Scoobies grieve for Tara at her funeral in this "deleted scene" fic that's part narrative, part prose-poem that satisfies what I want and need: proper tribute paid to Tara after her death and acknowledgement of her importance to beyond "Willow's partner". Spare and melancholy with a surprising warmth beneath the sadness, it gave me what I wanted AND needed. (Inspired this meta post that is one of my favorite things I have ever written.)

"Warmth" by thedissociation - (Buffy, Tara, Dawn, implied B/T; S6 episodic of Dead Things.) - Buffy's confession and breakdown to Tara in DT has been one of the most frequent and convenient starting points for Buffy & Tara fics; this is one of my favorite versions. Can be read as friendship or 'shippy' depending on which way you squint. The label or catagory isn't what matters here; the most important thing is the sense of "family"; the interweaving of sadness, love, confusion and hope; of emotional comfort freely given and reluctantly received.

Avengers verse
Starks' A. I. bots are building another bot. Adorable story.

So in the end there always ends up being some sort of tiny, insignificant anomaly --- not a mistake, or anything. Just a... a loophole, in the programming parameters. This line totally reminds me of a plotline from Freefall, and you can see another example of robots creating robots in Girl Genius.

5 Stories I Wasn't Able to Find
I asked and was told it was okay to post recs for stories I couldn't find the links to. Anyone know where any of these are?
Edited: I'm posting links to the stories as I learn what they are.

1) AtS, a short story I believe. A plague, created by humans I think, has been unleashed on the world. The Hyperion has become something of a safe house, keeping people physically safe from demons if not the plague virus. I think Lorn and some witches hightailed it out of there but were unable to take non-magical humans who wouldn't have survived in the other dimension. Cordelia and two others are sitting on the roof, looking at the sunset maybe. The other two go back in and, once they are out of sight, Cordelia starts showing signs of the plague (coughing?). Then she gets up, squares her shoulders, and goes back down to do the work of the day. Basically hiding the disease from everyone and getting on with the work.
