Caster Sugar first part and second: I'd requested a story - Spike eating the Band Candy - that thisficklemob had been thinking on for years. Spike reverts to William, which does make sense now that I think on it. It's delightful.

Gabrielle's Answering Prayers: Joyce and Angel's relationship in the summer between seasons 2 and 3. It's brilliant.

Il Mio Capitano's Double Dipping: One of three recs for stories set in "Band Candy". (The others are Caster Sugar and the Saturday NIght vid.) Ripper and Joyce don't go as quietly as Buffy thinks.

Punch Kicker's If You Are What You Say You Are: Okay, I adore this because Joyce is saved. What can I say? I like Joyce.

FeliciaCraft's Lust at First Sight: Giles falls.

Sad That You Can't Hear by [livejournal.com profile] dragonyphoenix (G, ~500 words). After Jenny's death, Giles talks to her.

The road never travelled; for which we yearn by [livejournal.com profile] kerkevik_2014 (G, 100 words). During the Burning Man Jenny seeks the answers and gets more than she bargained for.

This Isn't A Kingdom by ilovehowyouletmefall (NC-17, ~35 000 words). It's beautifully crafted longfic set in Wishverse, where Rupert Giles and Jenny Calendar unexpectedly find themselves working with a group of students, struggling to hold back the forces of darkness.
Story is a bit dark, as you expect from the wishverse fic, but it's not hoplessly dark.

And some fanart:

Living History by LizMarcs
Rating: PG, Worksafe
Some people have come from a place far, far away and a time far, far ahead to ask for help on an urgent matter. The time they were aiming for? February 2008. The place? Moscow. The problem? Somehow they've ended up in Cleveland, September 2003. And that’s just the beginning of the trouble; they seem to be descendants of the Scoobies and are determined not to change the past... but they haven't reckoned with Xander. Superbly written with a fascinating plot, some of the most beautifully crafted OCs I've ever seen and a wonderful portrayal of Xander and Faith. Very highly recommended!

The Lion Laying Down With The Lambness Of Xander And Larry by [livejournal.com profile] reremouse: Xander/Larry. What I'd pay to see the conclusion to this one? The Xander voice is perfection. The whole atmosphere is funny and witty and crazy. Xander and Larry in their most boy high school romance glory.

As I was waiting for Buffyverse Top 5 to begin this month, these came to mind as in I didn't go looking at my bookmarks.

1. Indri's In the Morning of the Magicians. This is totally my head-canon for how Ripper and Ethan met. It has so many things going for it. Bourgeois Ripper who is put off by his friends' lifestyle. The story Ripper is telling himself keeps changing as he realizes he's not going to make it big as a musician. How Eyghon would not have been invoked without both Ripper and Ethan in the mix, but Ripper denies all blame, putting it all on Ethan. This is what breaks Ethan, taking the blame onto himself and thinking that he doesn't know how to have friends and that's what turns him into the Ethan from BtVS. It's a marvelous tale.

the rest of the recs are at the halloween party / samhain ritual that I'm late for )

I’m a sucker for stories that say ‘what happens next’ post series, because there are so many possibilities. Here are five ‘what ifs..
.
Half a Sky of Stars by [livejournal.com profile] curiouswombat has my all time bullet proof kink – strong, confident Xander who has found his place in the world. Just gorgeous. Oh and this is het.

Last year, I posted five historical fics, and promised I would post five more. I didn't get around to it then, so here they are now:

1. Sacred, by Valancy -- An encounter between Angel, Spike, and Dru, set sometime after the events of the Boxer Rebellion. This is one of those stories that makes you think, "Oh, of course that would have happened." A beautifully written, emotionally authentic story with spot-on voices and characterization. I've only recently discovered this story, and unfortunately have been able to find very little of the author's other work.

I know Gabrielle has already posted a dark fic list, but since it is almost Halloween, I thought we could stand to have another one. Here are five Xander fics that play in the shadows of the Buffy ‘verse. These are all dark and delicious and make me go ‘eeeeeek....’

Red Apple Falls by [livejournal.com profile] _dellamore makes me want to go hide under the bed. Bodies are stacking up all over Sunnydale. The Scoobies think they know who’s responsible, but only Xander knows why. It’s amazing what can happen when love becomes obsession. Make sure you read this with the light on.

Some favorite complete longfics from the past years.
Any bad English in summaries is mine and shouldn't be blamed on fic authors.

Gently Down the Stream by [livejournal.com profile] shadowscast (Ensemble, with some Buffy/Spike, PG-13). Here's Buffy's life in a nutshell: dead mom, dead-beat dad, dead end job, dependent sister. She's pulling double shifts at the Double Meat Palace to make ends meet.
And yet, she's actually pretty happy! She's got supportive friends and a sexy English boyfriend. Her life is full of love, and frankly after that accident last year and the coma, she's grateful just to be alive.
Oh, and the main point - it's NOT all-human AU.

After last year's Top 5, I decided I'd keep track of stories I liked so I'd have tons of choices when making my list. I October, when I was going through my list of fanfic faves, I found I had enough for one set of five stories written in 2015. Since then I've come up with another seven. I have to conclude I could have been paying better attention in the earlier part of 2014. For example, I just reread aadler's Maxima Culpa, and that totally would have been on my rec list if I'd been paying more attention.

1) Rahirah's Black Friday. I personally can't imagine shopping on Black Friday but Spike and Buffy do seem made for it.

The other four stories have a hand raised and are calling out "Oh, oh, Mr. Kotter. Mr. Kotter." )

Okay, here I am too! I wish to thank everyone who recommended other fics, especially the Spangel ones. I know some of them, since I did some time lurking the English fandom but saying nothing (Because I didn't know how to write), but it's really nice to discover other classics. It makes me feel part of the group.

So, my list: 5 fics with Spike as major character I love so much (There are too many Spike-centric fics in this fandom that I love and it's hard to pick just 5)

Beggars would Ride by [livejournal.com profile] wiseacress This is one of the first Spike/Angel fics I've ever read. It's painful, dark and gorgeously written. I love the dynamic between Angel and Spike and how they hurt each others. I'm a sucker for Spangel h/c.

19 Hours by Annie Sewell-Jennings. First English Spuffy fic. Just glorious. It's a post Chosen fic, it's Spike/Buffy-centric and there is a lot of glorious happy sex involved. If you love Spike and Buffy together you have to read this.

To Come Home To by [livejournal.com profile] snickfic Recently discovered and it's a series. Again with the Spuffy post-Chosen kinda happy place. This one is also about mpreg and believe me when I say that it's the greatest thing ever.

Stick Shift by [livejournal.com profile] stultiloquentia Spike. Buffy. Pegging. Hot. If you like hot Spuffy porn this is the thing for you.

A Raising in the Sun by [livejournal.com profile] rahirah I guess that everybody knows this one. It's actually my favorite part of the saga. I love it because it really feels S6-like and it's all Spike's POV and it's excellent.
[identity profile] spikesjojo.livejournal.com
Here are a few of my favorite Spike/Angel stories. Most of these contain explicit slash, none of them are workplace safe.

To Take You in - by Jessica Walker (aka Anonymous) This is a new twist on an old idea. Spike comes to Angel when he is chipped. But Jessica has a wonderful back story for Spike and Angel. The word Buffy is never mentioned, nor is Sunnydale. The story is told from Angel's POV, and the voice is excellent! http://www.fangedfour.com/fangs/fiction/anonymous.html

Time is the Fire in Which We Burn - I had to pick one story from Love that Dares, a website with all of Jenny's fiction. This is the first story in a long series. Her Spike/Angel fiction is hot, and her voices, including Wesley are spot on. I highly recommend all of her fiction. http://www.squashduck.com/ltd/spikeangelmain.htm

The Relevance of Spike - Author: stakeaclaim - "It was a big day. A hundred and twenty-five years. A quarter of the way through his second century and he’d decided today was the day it was all going to change" And it all does change, though not in ways anyone could expect. It's long, unpredictable and intricate, and it will keep you up all night. http://stakeaclaim.livejournal.com/714.html

You and I Collide - Author: spikesfool - it's dark, and painful. Spike crosses the line with Angel, and Angel makes him pay. Angel grows darker as he enjoys his payback. http://spring-spangel.livejournal.com/45738.html

Waking William - Author: Feliblanco. Spike has gotten his soul and he still has his chip. When he arrives in LA he is nearly dead from the abuse an attractive man who can't fight back, and who believes he deserves punishment, he has suffered. But the story goes off into some interesting directions beyond the h/c.

Yay! I thougth this was starting tommorow but it's today! Oooh, and loving the batty background.

Of course I'm going to start with slash. Wow, and every single one of these has Giles in it. Fixated much?

1. Indri's In the Morning of the Magicians is now my head canon for Ripper/Ethan, how they met, and why they invoked Eyghon. Delightful.

the rest of the recs have started a donnybrook over what kind of porny music they should be playing )
[identity profile] lusciousxander.livejournal.com
1) Cousins to the War by [livejournal.com profile] jo_anne_storm: Okay, I've never watched Teen Wolf but I heard a lot about the similarities between Xander and Stiles and got curious. I don't regret a second of it. I'm glad that it's Stiles visiting Xander instead of the other way around. I'm also glad that Stiles is Xander's cousin and not his lover.

[livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip is a talented writer, a supportive fandom cheerleader, and a force to be reckoned with. (I mean that with 110% sincerity. She rocks!) This year, [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip once again showed her talent and quality and I want to showcase five of my favorite works. She wrote plenty more besides, of course, and you should all put this woman on your to-read-now lists!

1) Discomforting - Willow/Spike (FRAO). In this story, Willow and Spike struggle to live life without Buffy. [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip captures the angst, the internal struggles of both characters. She is able to make this pairing seem believable, and judging from the comments, she was able to entrance readers who normally don't read Spike/Willow pairings. She also writes what could be one of the steamiest sex scenes ever. Yum!

Bit of a feeble title, but these fics don't have an overarching theme, except that I enjoyed them all a lot.

Broken English by [livejournal.com profile] estepheia. Giles/Ethan, rated R.
Not only do I love this fic, but there was a long stretch of time when it looked like it wouldn't be finished (the first part was posted way back in 2007), but [livejournal.com profile] estepheia, despite being very busy in RL, came back and finished it. So pleased! A terrific story from a Buffyverse fandom legend.

For all the depictions of mental illness and emotion dysfunction, there isn't a ton of Buffyverse fic showing our beloved (and not so beloved) characters getting professional help. Here are a few that go there:

Once in a Lullaby (Five Things That Happened Somewhere Else) by [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4 (PG13, Normal Again-verse Buffy)
Buffy has a disconcerting habit of killing her doctors. Therapeutically speaking.

Four more, in different moods... )

I’m a sucker for a good BTVS crossover, so here are five that I come back to again and again.

Out of the Shadows by [livejournal.com profile] twilightofmagic is a gem of a Torchwood crossover and I’d recommend it even if you’ve never watched Torchwood, because it really doesn’t matter. Xander takes a walk to get away from the estrogen-heavy castle in Scotland and runs into someone who looks kind of familiar... I wish all my walks were this productive!

Lures you down the rabbit hole to the rest of the fics… )

If you've been following you'll notice I went a bit overboard with recs this year.
;-)

I basically found a bunch of stories I adore and then put them into categories. Here are five that are awesome but didn't get put into any of the other categories. I marked the two that are not worksafe.

1) Dealing by estephia
Not worksafe.
Ethan/Lindsey
Ever wonder how Lindsey got those tats?

The rest of the recs are sharing a joint and gazing about at all the pretty fall leaves ...  )
[identity profile] dragonyphoenix.livejournal.com
All of these are either part of a series or a rec for the series as a whole.
None of these are worksafe, but none are terribly squicky either.

1) Of Old Mystics by omphalos and Wolfling: Giles/Ethan - Giles, now head of the Council, rescues Ethan from the Initiative only to learn that they are a bonded pair, Order and Chaos, who must work together to save the world. One of my favorite go-back-to stories.

The other five recs are eyeing each other and wondering who's going to clean up the mess from that Halloween bash ... )
[identity profile] punch-kicker15.livejournal.com
Willow is a fascinating and complex character to me, and I really enjoy fiction that reflects that. Here are five classic Willow fics. I'm going to be cautious and label them all not worksafe.

1) The Power and The Other Thing by [livejournal.com profile] mosca.Willow/Tara, Willow/Glory (not really the focus of the story) Gorgeous Wishverse story, with Nerdy Willow, Super-witch Willow, and Scary Willow all wrapped up into one. I really enjoy the way the characters from Angel were worked in. The tone is a bit chilly and remote and matches the world-building wonderfully. This is one of the most hopeful Wishverse stories I've read, but the hope seems earned. This is one of those stories that I think should get a lot more recognition than it has.

Back today with five of my favourite stories by [livejournal.com profile] shadowscast. I love her stories so much. She writes the best Spander (not a pairing I otherwise read) and can, when she wants, deliver a killer punch to the emotional gut.

Sunshine, Spike/Xander, NC17 for one short, but explicit sex scene. Thirteen years have passed since Spike mysteriously disappeared in Africa. What's he been doing all that time? On a visit to London for a happy occasion, Xander gets to find out.

Spike can be good or evil and everything in between... and still be in character. Here are 5 wonderful fics by very accomplished writers. I found each of these stories fascinating for a number of reasons, one of them being the authors’ interpretations of Spike and how each one rang true to me.

Please be warned, some of these stories contain upsetting subject matter including issues of nonconsensual and/or underage sex. I will leave it to the authors to provide the exact warnings they feel are appropriate.

[livejournal.com profile] shapinglight has been one of my favorite writers since I came to LJ and before. When I read her stories, I can see every scene vividly in front of me. I sometimes forget it came completely from someone's imagination.

The following 5 stories are a good representation of her work. She is currently uploading some of her works to Ao3 under the name glassdarkly. In the meantime, you can find most of her stories on her personal journal or at [livejournal.com profile] glassdarklyuk (you must friend this journal to read it, but in doing so you will have access to her extraordinary "indulgent" kink-fics).

5 Spander Recs
Well, come on, obviously I've got to rec Spander ;-)
I don't recall which ones have sex and which don't so lets just call them all not worksafe to be on the safe side.
Note: Edited to adjust the location of the lj-cut.

1) whichclothes and Emelye Miller wrote El Cuento del Bucanero y del Vampiro together. Spike and Xander go undercover as luchadores. The art, Spike and Xander dressed as luchadores, is brilliant. Um, not to say the writing isn't also brilliant. The authors took turns writing chapters and obviously took great delight in writing cliffhangers that the other had to finish off. ;-)

Time's Fool by Lady Jane at the Bloodshedverse, or at Elysian fields (may need to register to read at EF) Spike/ Buffy "eventually NC17" though it hasn't gotten there yet.

Future fic. Decades down the road Spike and Buffy meet up again for the first time since Sunnydale. Plotty goodness. A really interesting and believable future for Our Heroes. Great characterizations, and believable motivations. Also, the author gets the medical details right. I appreciate that! Warning: still a WIP

long, plotty, spuffy goodness! )

It’s no secret that I’m a Xander-centric writer and reader, so here are five Xander fics that really got under my skin in 2012.

Xander’s Kingdom by [livejournal.com profile] il_mio_capitano is terrific Xander, Giles Gen. The boys have been in the desert searching for a magical dodaah for Buffy, but things haven’t gone exactly to plan. The atmosphere in this is great and there are lines of dialogue that just kill me. For Want of A Back Porch by [livejournal.com profile] gryfndor_godess

PG. Completed, ~21,000 words. Post-season 8. Spike's occasional visits to Buffy's place are all about business, aren't they? :) [livejournal.com profile] gryfndor_godess focuses on Buffy and Spike's tentative, small steps towards each other; her story is poignant, funny, with outrageous breaks through the fourth wall. Hmmm, lets's see: Spander, Spander, non-specific in terms of relationships but VERY funny, Spander, and Spike.  I'm sensing an almost-theme.  ;-)

  1. naughty_fae's The Eagle of the Ninth: Very AU Spander. This is the story of two men, Roman Master and his Brigante slave. The Roman embarks on a crusade to clear his family name and restore honor, the slave fights for his freedom. They move from mutual hatred to understanding, acceptance, friendship and love.

  2. sparrow2000's Mockingbird: In Magpie, Spike had seemingly foiled Drusilla's plans for Xander, but now Dru is back.

  3. beer-good-foamy's Ms Summers Goes to Washington: A crossover with West Wing: The American people need protection from vampires. Buffy needs funding. The American government has money. You'd think there'd be an obvious solution to this. And so, one day, Buffy, Giles and Willow dressed up in their best business suits and dropped by the White House.

  4. skuzzbopper's Three Dog Night series: Spike catches Xander reading a book on seducing non-mortals, and offers three nights of hands-on "lessons" in the subject-- which is just wonderful, since the non-mortal Xander had been hoping to seduce was Spike.

  5. hello spikey's Porny Advent #8:A drabble written to the prompt of wrapping paper; Spike gets ready for his night.

1. Crazy Madcap Redemption, by [livejournal.com profile] hello_spikey
Ats S5; Spike/Dru; longfic.
In which Dru gets a chance to choose who she is and become her own person. Dru finds Spike hanging about Wolfram & Hart, and Spike, heartsore, lonely, and remembering sweet times past, takes it upon himself to save her. This doesn't work out quite how either of them expect. It's all very satisfying, with lovely characterizations and occasional bits of Spikey's hilarious dialogue.
