I always try to do a crossover list every year so carrying on with that tradition here are five more classic crossovers that I love.

Spill by Miriam Heddy is a BTVS/Dresden Files crossover. To use the author’s summary “Bob and Harry take a road trip to help Spike and Xander deal with some very unmixy things on the Cleveland Hellmouth.” Harry is grumpy and confused, Bob is insightful and just a bit wistful and Spike and Xander are snarky and hot and sometimes just as confused as Harry. The whole thing is loads of fun and I should say that there is Spander slashy goodness just in case that’s not your thing, although most of it is off screen as it were. Also, given that the author has locked the story to AO3 members only, you can also find it at the Spander Files Spill (alternative location) if needed.

Here are five classic Buffy 'verse vids that I love. Assume that there are spoilers for both BTVS and AtS in these vids.

Life is Beautiful by starryeyesxx1. Possibly my favourite BTVS/AtS ensemble vid. This is 6 minutes of awesomeness.

1) Reassembling by texasfan. "What if both Buffy and Anya died at the end of The Gift?" Eventual Spike/Xander. I liked both the gradual way this developed and also watching how this one big change was able to lead to various other ones through S6. Read more... )

When I discovered fandom and fic back in the early 2000's, there are some stories that stood out because they made me realise just how wonderfully malleable canon could be in the right hands. That realisation expanded my universe! :)

I’ve recced Te’s stories many times before, but my love for her stuff bears repeating. Post Grad series blew my tiny, sheltered mind when I read it early on in my adventures in fandom. It made me understand the power of ‘what if’. This is Spike/Xander, plot, porn and so much ‘oh my goodness’ that it makes my eyes cross just thinking about it.

Am I the only one having trouble posting to or even loading LJ? This has been going on for days for me. I had this post set to go and got a 500 error only to find that the post was lost and didn't go through.

WIP Spike on a Bike by sanshodelaine. Much as I enjoy DVD commentaries I like seeing artworks posted in progress, and this is certainly wonderfully done.

Anatomy of a Willow Outfit by tarastheory. Doing an Outfit of the Day tied to specific BtVS episodes, this was a fun look at fashion which isn't always so fashionable these days ;)

Headers + Icons | Road Trip by sintonia. Wonderful colors and composition of Buffy, Spike, and the DeSoto looking more springlike than one would have ever imagined!

My Sweet Babies by peskysaku. Black and white Spike and Xander -- I think they're absolutely wrong about being alone in the ship.

This was my fifth rec but I discovered that the whole community seems to be gone. Anyone know what happened?

Sweet Fred, Remote Buffy by timetobegin. Adorable over the shoulder icon of Fred and I quite liked the thoughtful, behind-the-glasses Buffy.
[identity profile] sparrow2000.livejournal.com
[livejournal.com profile] flowspuffy beat me to it with her crossover list, which looks terrific. (I was internetless yesterday, so am late to the party). Anyway you can never have enough crossover recs, so here's another five that I hope you enjoy.

A Girl Made of Sky by Doyle is a BTVS crossover with Neil Gaiman’s Sandman and features Dawn and the Cheeseman. I can’t say anything about this other than I wish I’d written it!

1) All This Has Happened Before by hazellazer. "It was LA, of course. He saw plenty of platinum blonde women in skimpy red dresses, he just didn't usually see them in his office." Super idea for a Dollhouse and BSG crossover.

2) Happy Holidays by sueworld. Photo manip of a holiday clad (and unclad) Buffy and Spike looking quite festive!

3) Drusilla Caged by laurappel. I liked the split human/vamp face and the idea of Dru as one of her birds.

4) Spander Happy Holidays by catvampcrazines. Bet we'd all like a set of shippy Christmas tree baubles!

5) James Masters (Spike) by Jenn Jamison. There's something about the softness of this technique that I quite liked.

Yay for the return of [livejournal.com profile] buffyversetop5. Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] petzipellepingo and [livejournal.com profile] yourlibrarian for continuing to host this lovely celebration of our fandom every year.

Since we’re running up to Halloween, here are five stories that make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. This is a mixture of pairings and canon characters.

For All My Pains A World of Sighs by [livejournal.com profile] baudown makes my heart ache at the same time as it gives me chills. This is mainly focused on Spike and his kills and is wonderfully written, and the short section at the end with Xander is haunting and beautiful. This has some slash.

1) Sands of Time  by James and Wolfing: I can never describe how much this story means to me. It was the first fanfic I ever read. It holds a special place in my heart. It's Xander angst at its finest and I'm a huge Xander angst fan. I love the Xander/Giles relationship here, perhaps even more than the Xander/Spike relationship. I love the chapter about Giles' family and Xander meeting them for the first time. I also love the part where Xander tastes his father's blood on Spike's lips - so chilling!

2) The Giles Thing by DrSquidlove: Another Xander fic I adore! It had probably the best portrayal of Xander's parents that I've ever seen in fics, and IMO the closest to the show's canon. The author writes the relationships between the characters so perfectly, and the characters' reaction to the relationship between Xander and Giles, especially Buffy and Joyce, was amazing.

3) Cuckoo in the Nest by Liz-Marcs: Told completely from Tony Harris' unreliable narration! I loved watching the show through Xander's father's eyes! A wonderful character study.

4) Sidelines by Anna S: The perfect "What if Xander was the gay Scooby instead of Willow" fic!

5) Late Night Double Feature by Kimberly A: The sequel for Just a Jump to the Left which I adore because it's the closest of an unrequited love story where Xander is in love with Spike while Spike is oblivious that I can find! Xander faces the consequences of the time loop in the previous fic, and realizes that making changes in his relationship with Spike isn't quite as easy as he'd like.

Being something of an expert on bad days lately, and wanting to contribute to this fabulous community, I decided I would share five stories I always go back and read when I am feeling down. Now those of you who know me don't need the following explanation, but for those who don't... no, these stories will not all be schmoopy fluff. I'm not known as the Queen of Angst for nothing and sometimes what makes me feel better is really, really angsty or even dark!fic. Read on... if you dare:

1) Red Frame, White Light by [livejournal.com profile] sparrow2000: Dark, creepy, and so exquisitely-crafted that it's like a blood red diamond. What is it about? Xander's visit to a 7-11 is anything but a well-lit fest of overpriced snack food. Other than that, all you need to know is that Sparrow does that voodoo that she do so well.

A story I'm currently reading, Off Your Bird's The Darkling, inspired this list. Buffy goes to that demon in Africa to get Spike back. He sends her to NYC in 1970. It's lovely to see their roles reversed, to see Buffy longing for a Spike who's slowly becoming convinced.

the rest of the fics are sittin on the dock of the bay watching the tide roll away )

[identity profile] sparrow2000.livejournal.com
I’ll finish my spamming with five fics that have nothing in common apart from the fact I thought they were great and they were written in 2017.

A new ficlet by [livejournal.com profile] baudown is always a pleasure because I love her elegant use of language and the way she can paint such a detailed portrait in such a short time. Trapped is a prime example - it’s Xander contemplating the contradictions of his vampire, beause no one can do contrary quite like Spike.

Ships, I've had a few, but then again, too few to.... that's a lie. I can ship practically anybody, if the author can show me how it works. In these meaty, angsty, and plot-driven stories, the writers made me believe in an unconventional, non-canon pairing. (And one thruple.) There may not always be a ton of romance, but there are always a ton of feelings. All links to AO3.

Into the Dark Age by Sadhyl (NC17, Buffy/Ethan/Ripper)
Buffy ends up in Black Magic 1970s London, in the company of some familiar — if much younger than she's used to — faces. She hopes to stop them from making a terrible mistake. They hope for something a lot more basic.

A few more, with vampires... )

I love [livejournal.com profile] buffyversetop5 classic recs. It's a great time to rootle around in the vault and rediscover fics that got me hooked on fandom way, way back in the day. As we're coming up to Halloween, here are five fics that make me shiver.

Three Ring by [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni finds Xander and Willow on a school trip to a less than normal circus. There aren’t any clowns in this fic, but if there were, I’m damn sure they’d be scary. This story always makes me want to go back and read Something Wicked This Way Comes. This is Gen.

Follow the trail of breadcrumbs to the gingerbread house... )
[identity profile] sparrow2000.livejournal.com
I’ve said many times before, but it bears repeating that I love [livejournal.com profile] baudown’s ability to tell a big story so economically. What Gives is a series of drabbles in which Xander tends to Spike’s injuries and Spike allows himself to be tended to.

Follow the trail of breadcrumbs... )
[identity profile] lusciousxander.livejournal.com
Facing the Monster by [livejournal.com profile] snogged: What if Spike found Xander after the events of “Reptile Boy?” Deliciously dark.

Smoke by feathers-and-cigarettes: Set in BtVS S10. Xander smoking weed.

Frame of Reference by [livejournal.com profile] baudown: This fic shows why I love Spander so much. Both Xander and Spike are equal.

Special Occasion by feathers-and-cigarettes: Xander is throwing Spike a surprise birthday party.

Notes by feathers-and-cigarettes: Spike is leaving notes for Xander in poetry form.

Bonus Drabble:

Temptation by [livejournal.com profile] strickens_girl: This is the funniest and hottest threesome out there.

I did my list of comedy fics that made me giggle in 2016, so here now is a list of five pretty angsty dramatic fics that made me go wow, I wish I’d written that.

First up is [livejournal.com profile] aadler’s There Ought to be Clowns (The Lying Eyes Remix). Buffy makes Xander a ‘no strings’ offer and Xander accepts. Funny how it becomes impossible to say what you really want once you’ve got what you asked for. I really loved the complicated Buffy characterisation in this story – it’s the road not taken, but feels very true to her character. And the use of repetition is an especially effective bell in her brain. Really good stuff.

Drops breadcrumbs to more lovely slices of storytelling… )
[identity profile] punch-kicker15.livejournal.com
I'm a big fan of fics where a well-timed spell, a friend stepping in to help, or someone asking the right question at the right time can solve a problem from canon.

Here are five short classic fics in that category:

1. Apotheosis by Ephemeral Night (Willow/Tara, General Audiences). Willow stumbles upon the secret for carrying out the Thy Will Be Done Spell in a more effective manner, and comes up with some clever and audacious to eliminate nearly every threat the Scooby Gang will ever face, and then takes it even further into the ultimate fix-it fic territory. Tagged as "fluff and crack" in AO3, and it's high quality fluff and crack.

The rest under the cut )
[identity profile] sparrow2000.livejournal.com
[livejournal.com profile] lusciousxander asked for some Spander, and who am I to deny her. I know there’s been a Spander epics list already, so I thought I’d offer up a list of one-shots that maybe might have fallen off people’s radar.

First up is Prophecy by [livejournal.com profile] nasty_shrew. The language in this is so beautiful and the way it starts and the way it ends is perfect and so is everything else in between.

Open on Sunday hasn’t had a post since July. As a memorial, I found five great - I went through a bunch but I didn’t read them all -  drabbles written for an Open on Sunday prompt.

1. [livejournal.com profile] punch_kicker15’s If You Are What You Say You Are because I’m a sucker for a happy ending.

2. [livejournal.com profile] romanyg’s Woman of Property because I’m also a sucker for angst

3. [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy’s Advant Gardener because no one writes humor like Beer Good Foamy

4. [livejournal.com profile] baudown’s Parlour Games because awesome Spander

5. [livejournal.com profile] nihilistbear’s Kiss from “Once More With Feeling” because ouch!

And while I’m here, the first prompt since April has recently been posted at Giles Shorts. Go. Write.
[identity profile] dragonyphoenix.livejournal.com
1. The Very Secret Diary of Andrew Wells by deird1 - Andrew’s journal, not exactly what you’d expect

2. hearing, seeing by [livejournal.com profile] kwritten - Dawn and Spike, grieving for Buffy, take a road trip without telling anyone

3. The Twelfth Sister by rowan (littlerhymes) - just so you know, very dark, but I'm pretty sure you alreay know that.

4. All Set Down - Oh Goddess, yes!

5. devo79’s Blackout - I always cry at the end
[identity profile] dragonyphoenix.livejournal.com
1. rebelrsr’s Forging Bonds - dom/sub ‘verse with Tara as the dom.

2. Naughty Fae’s Whitechapel - Spike/Xander in an all human AU based on Ripper Street

3. Deja Without a View - [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip’s masterful retelling of [livejournal.com profile] aadler’s amazing Dust Over Pompeii for the Circle of Friends remix. Willow/Riley. I could have chosen to remix this story but I looked at it and told myself it was an impossible remix. I was so very, very wrong.

4. [livejournal.com profile] booster17’s Sleeper - Xander/Faith. If I describe the story, I’ll give it away. This has been one of my faves since I first read it.

5. [livejournal.com profile] drsquidlove’s New York - Xander/Giles. This is an amazing epic. I really can’t sum it up better than the author: Xander is thirty-seven. Divorced. Two kids. 4000 miles from Sunnydale and his Hellmouth childhood. Also, straight. Only someone forgot to tell Giles. In fact... where the hell is Giles?
[identity profile] dragonyphoenix.livejournal.com
This may have been the most difficult category to select from.

I didn’t track stories I like back when I first got heavy into Spander so I ended up skimming through a whole list of Spander epics. I do find it interesting that the Spander stories I like now are ones I either did keep track of or did recall once I started reading them.

These aren't out-and-out porn but it is Spander so expect some sex, that is, don't count on them being completely worksafe but they mostly are.

  1. James and Wolfling’s Sands of Time - in season 1, Giles takes Xander in and his life changes completely. It’s just so great to see Xander have a wonderful life and then the courage it takes for him to save his friends in the end. This story rocks.

I'd tell you what the other recs are up to but I'm already blushing! )

Yes, I know that everything [livejournal.com profile] sparrow2000 writes is excellent, but here are my top five picks from the past year:

1. No Lodging is probably me favorite fic of the year. It's tragic and haunting, and the language and imagery just stayed with me.

2. Words to Live By is a fascinating and original look at Xander in one of his darker moments.

3. One of These Days is a little slice of Giles' and Ethan's history. It's now head canon for me.

4. Pushing Limits is Xander/Lindsey pre-slash. Xander's living for the moment. At least, for the moment.

5. Distraction is Spike/Xander. A slice of their life together, and the voices are absolutely perfect.
[identity profile] sparrow2000.livejournal.com
Here are five [livejournal.com profile] open_on_sunday entries I really enjoyed last year. And looking back through links I’ve collected I’m embarrassed that I didn`t get around to commenting on a few on them, so I really must recify that! But that aside, they are all great in their different ways.

I’ve Got You Under My Skin by [livejournal.com profile] xspike4evax is a lovely look inside Cordy’s head as she wonders what she sees in Xander.

The Lion Laying Down With The Lambness Of Xander And Larry by [livejournal.com profile] reremouse: Xander/Larry. What I'd pay to see the conclusion to this one? The Xander voice is perfection. The whole atmosphere is funny and witty and crazy. Xander and Larry in their most boy high school romance glory.

I often gravitate towards hurt/comfort fics which in turn often gravitate towards pain, angst, and bittersweetness.
I have a lot of fics that I'd like to recommend but had to find five examples only. Hope you will enjoy them as much as I did. Note that I had accidentally posted a fic by TheSigyn which was a Harmony/Spike fic but that ones is actually too new to be a classic. My bad.

I know Gabrielle has already posted a dark fic list, but since it is almost Halloween, I thought we could stand to have another one. Here are five Xander fics that play in the shadows of the Buffy ‘verse. These are all dark and delicious and make me go ‘eeeeeek....’

Red Apple Falls by [livejournal.com profile] _dellamore makes me want to go hide under the bed. Bodies are stacking up all over Sunnydale. The Scoobies think they know who’s responsible, but only Xander knows why. It’s amazing what can happen when love becomes obsession. Make sure you read this with the light on.

Five Dark and Creepy Classics for Halloween

1) Twitch (Spike/Xander) by The Spuzz:

This is one of the creepiest Spander tales you’ll ever read, with Spike at his most dark and obsessive. I’ve been haunted by it since the first time I ever read it and I am sure you will be too. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.

Four More Chillers Beneath The Cut )

After last year's Top 5, I decided I'd keep track of stories I liked so I'd have tons of choices when making my list. I October, when I was going through my list of fanfic faves, I found I had enough for one set of five stories written in 2015. Since then I've come up with another seven. I have to conclude I could have been paying better attention in the earlier part of 2014. For example, I just reread aadler's Maxima Culpa, and that totally would have been on my rec list if I'd been paying more attention.

1) Rahirah's Black Friday. I personally can't imagine shopping on Black Friday but Spike and Buffy do seem made for it.

The other four stories have a hand raised and are calling out "Oh, oh, Mr. Kotter. Mr. Kotter." )

Spike and Xander are a great odd couple, if you like that sort of thing. Obviously lots of people do like it, and here is just a small sampling of some of the classics of the genre, in order of length:

Five fics that will get under your skin:

1. The Loving Dead, by witling -- Xander is being haunted. Is it ghosts, or ghosts of the past? Eerie, atmospheric, and a little bit heartbreaking. A beautifully rendered Xander.

2. Macrame, by Anna S -- Willow overuses magic. Magic has consequences. As always, the writing is extraordinary. Spander.

3. Skin Deep, by Doyle -- A short and very scary season 7 AU. Yikes.

4. Cuckoo in the Nest, by liz marks -- A character study of Tony Harris, an all-too human monster. This will hit you like a punch to the gut. This one stuck with me for a long, long time.

5. Red Frame, White Light, by sparrow2000 -- Post-soul Spike's craziness takes a slightly different form. His encounter with Xander is shivery perfection.
[identity profile] velvetwhip.livejournal.com
Since my last list was Willow-centric, I thought I should post a list of five fics I love which don't feature her (I know... didn't think I read anything like that, did you? Surprise!)

1) For My Pain, A World of Sighs (Spike/Xander) by [livejournal.com profile] baudown: This is an exquisitely-wrought cold-chill of a tale - an AU where Spike arrives in Sunnydale earlier than we see in canon... and alone. This is the Spike who rained death and destruction in Europe in all his merciless glory and I am awed anew every time I read this story.

Five random fics that got under my skin in 2013.

In the Moment by [livejournal.com profile] whiskyinmind is small and beautifully formed. It’s a terrific look inside Faith’s head and just oozes regret and mighthavebeens.

And the rest… )

1) Forget-me-not by [livejournal.com profile] mierke: Ten years have passed since Chosen. Buffy, Xander, Willow and Giles meet by the crater where Sunnydale used to be every year to catch up on what's happening in their lives. Bittersweet and sad, shows you how the Scoobies have drifted apart yet still make time to see each other and catch up. Just like blood-related families on Christmas and Thanksgiving.

Goodbye, JustRewards.com. Farewell, spikeskat.rogue-poet.com. Au revoir, The-Sandlot.com. You still may be partially available via Wayback Machine, but I miss you in all your full-functionality.

When websites die, some excellent but not well-distributed fics die with them. Which is why I am SO EXCITED when favorite writers start to put their old stuff up on Archive of Our Own, where it will presumably gain immortality a longer life. In addition, AO3 and some other sites allow for ePub download to reading devices, something that wasn't around when the stories were originally written. Thanks to AO3, Elysian Fields, and The SpuffyRealm for keeping up with new technologies — but especially thanks to the writers who care enough to feed the fic-hungry beast*, even if they aren't active in the fandom anymore.

Here are just a few, in alphabetical order:

1) Beer Good Foamy wrote a crossover between Buffy and Welcome to Night Vale Radio Silence that outdoes even the usual awesomeness of a Beer Good story.

Well it looks as if I might be first up to post - happy new year everyone! :)

[livejournal.com profile] baudown gives good drabble, and I can only envy her effortless talent for telling huge stories with such economy and style. Here are five of my favourite drabbles from her written in 2013. Most, but not all are Spike, Xander in some form or another.

My favourite drabble hands down of the year ‘Til I’m Gathered Safely In. The last line especially makes me sigh.

More drabbles right this way... )
[identity profile] sparrow2000.livejournal.com
I’m a sucker for a good BTVS crossover, so here are five that I come back to again and again.

Out of the Shadows by [livejournal.com profile] twilightofmagic is a gem of a Torchwood crossover and I’d recommend it even if you’ve never watched Torchwood, because it really doesn’t matter. Xander takes a walk to get away from the estrogen-heavy castle in Scotland and runs into someone who looks kind of familiar... I wish all my walks were this productive!

All of these are either part of a series or a rec for the series as a whole.
None of these are worksafe, but none are terribly squicky either.

1) Of Old Mystics by omphalos and Wolfling: Giles/Ethan - Giles, now head of the Council, rescues Ethan from the Initiative only to learn that they are a bonded pair, Order and Chaos, who must work together to save the world. One of my favorite go-back-to stories.

Okay, I had a bunch of stories left over and no great way to group them! They are still awesome stories.

1) Amnesia!Spike by Mahaliem
Whenever I rec it I get a bunch of people agreeing it's wonderful but I hardly ever see it recced

Spike nodded in agreement. He was just getting used to hearing his name. Whatever had happened earlier in the evening had wiped his memory clean. He didn’t know who he was, and to hear the lot of them talk, he didn’t know what he was, either. In fact, he only knew one thing about himself. Luckily it was a very important thing.

He had a really cool coat.

the other recs are busy agreeing that Spike's coat really is cool )

I tend to go for stories where the victim's/slaves'/whatever-you-want-to-call-it thought-patterns are being changed; largely, I think, because there is a parallel to how we are molded by job/society. However, not all of these are dark.
But ... not worksafe. None of them. Don't even think of opening them at the office unless you work at this place (see last strip).
Edited: I now know where the last story is.

1) Ash Carpenter's The Show: Angel, to better infiltrate the Black Thorn, presents Spike as his slave. This one is very dark.

the other recs are busy mocking me for blushing as I post these... )
