Some historical fics that surprised me - either by the choice of setting or by the use of it.

A Lost Letter of Jane Austen and Darla's Letter by hello_spikey. A clergyman's daughter writes her sister about two new acquaintences, a Mr. and Mrs. Angelus.

The Scourge Does Titipu by rebcake. Fanged Four musical comedy. Yes? Yes!!!

Us And Them by beer_good_foamy. Wolfram & Hart backstory. Way, way, WAY pre-series and even pre-history.

Propugnatrix Pollia by quinara. The final account of the Watcher Secundus Pollius Paulus, in the year 48 AD, describing the events that lead to his Slayer’s premature death.

The Cloak of Mist by speakr2customrs. Beautifully written adventure story about OC Slayer called on the Isle of Mann, A.D. 1014.
