Five recs from sparrow that don't contain Xander!

It’s a known fact that I have a mild predilection for young Mr Harris, so I challenged myself that I would do at least one list where Xander is nowhere in sight! *g*

Arrhizal by sunnyd_lite is a terrific look inside River’s head as she thinks about Simon and the rest of the crew. Beautiful evocative use of imagery makes this one a keeper.


speakr2customrs’ ficlet Six Thousand Miles tackles the thorny subject of what happens when the ‘one girl in all the world’ isn’t actually in the place where the trouble is. And there’s a link to the epilogue ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ at the bottom of the story – it’s a kick in the gut in the best possible way.

For a bit of Spuffy fluff, look no further than shapinglight’s Marriage of Convenience which is a wonderful take on Willow’s ‘my will be done’ spell. Deb is a terrific writer and this is one example of why she can get me to read pairings that aren’t usually my thing.

estepheia is another superb writer and you can’t get a finer example of her craft than Wizard. This gem of a ficlet is a chilling and oh so plausible portrait of Ethan. Reading it again just makes me wish I’d written it.

Finally, We Make Our Own Magic by ruuger is as beautiful a piece of storytelling as you’ll come across. Not everyone can be Chosen - Giles goes to visit one who wasn’t. I love stories that take a sideways look at our familiar fandom and by doing so, illuminate it in fresh and interesting ways. This is one of those stories. (The only thing with this fic is that you have to be a member of A03 to read it, but if you're not a member, it's worth signing up just to read this.)

See, not a Xander in sight. I may have to go lie down now! :)
