My last list, which I'm doing now because I may be away this weekend.
Five fannish things I really enjoyed in 2013, in no particular order.
First, some wonderful meta from
lostboy_lj, The Monomythology of Buffy. Buffy on Campbell's 'classic' hero's journey, all explained in pretty pictures. Brilliant!
I have to do a shout-out to the
sb_fag_ends community for shorty Spuffy fics. It's been quiet the last couple of months, but it's still, IMO, one of the best fanfic communities left on LJ.
Now back to the fic, and a couple more stories by
hello_spikey.
Popsicle Night, Spike/Angel, R/NC-17 (ish), with some dodgy consent issues. This fic was written for
rekindlespangel last year. Newly souled Spike doesn't return to Sunnydale. Instead, Angel finds him working in an LA strip club. H/C, written with
hello_spikey's usual great characterisation and dialogue.
Manila Envelope by
hello_spikey, Spike/Buffy, with a dash of Spike/Angel, PG/R(ish). Angel receives an anonymous tip-off in the mail that sends him racing back to Sunnydale. French farce-style wackiness ensues.
Finally, one more fic from
beer_good_foamy, Spike: Mall Santa, Spike/Buffy, PG. A delightful Christmas fic, in which Spike tries (not very hard) to be helpful when the local mall Santa goes AWOL.

Date: 2014-01-17 07:14 pm (UTC)I was going to rec Lostboy's meta myself, but I have so many others to do this might be a blessing in disguise! He hasn't done as many meta 2013 as 2012 but that one is really helpful; I've been told to look at Joseph Campbell in relation to the series and Buffy's Hero arc, but honestly I've been too busy/lazy to do so and as much as I love (wordy) meta, Lostboy's is like a Cliff Notes version but much prettier.
And I just read bgf's "Mall Santa" the other day - too funny.
