How could I let the year go by with celebrating some stories that brought the pain in all the best ways? I couldn't, so here are some beautifully bleak tales to wrap the shiniest silver lining in foggy clouds:

1) Word Association (Buffy/Angel) by [livejournal.com profile] librarian2003: The summary of this reads "Be careful what you wish for" and I hesitate to offer more detail than that for fear of spoiling this tragic ride. Just know that it was written by Jo and that should be enough to get you clicking that link immediately. It's a masterpiece of pain and indifferent cruelty.

2) Without the Lion (Willow, Giles) by [livejournal.com profile] dragonyphoenix: Here's a ripping admonition that one should never let down one's guard - especially in a library. [livejournal.com profile] dragonyphoenix does a marvelous job of showing the consequences of complacency. Short, sharp, and deadly... delicious.

3) Initiative Blues (Spike, Buffy, Maggie Walsh) by [livejournal.com profile] comlodge: Ever wonder what would have happened had Hostile 17's escape been more temporary? Well [livejournal.com profile] comlodge has and... it's not pretty. It is, however, an extremely well-crafted must-read for all you fanciers of the darker side of fanfic.

4) Amazon (Tara, Maggie Walsh) by [livejournal.com profile] snowpuppies: The Initiative is such a marvelous source of dark inspiration, but no one goes there quite like [livejournal.com profile] snowpuppies, and she shows her extraordinary skill in this short but powerfully memorable tale of what happens when Dr. Walsh gets her hands on a real witch. Wow. Just wow.

5) Bitter From the Sweet (The I've Been to Paradise Remix) (Buffy/Angel) by [livejournal.com profile] aadler: This might not be as dark as the other entries on this list, but it's as despairing and bleak as if it were, so it well deserves its place on this list. [livejournal.com profile] aadler's depiction of a post-resurrection encounter between Buffy and Angel is anything but star-crossed romance... and absolutely wonderful in its grey perfection.

Bonus Entry: The Pleasure of Her Tears (Willow/Angel) by [livejournal.com profile] angelus2hot: Having given you five examples of sorrow and misery, I thought maybe I should add a little dollop of a more gleeful and... "fun" sort of angst. How better than in this tale of an Angelus who's actually as crafty as the show was always telling us? [livejournal.com profile] angelus2hot's tale set in the aftermath of the events of Passion will have you begging for a sequel.

Oooh, look. you rec'd my story! Thanks. ;-)

I'd read the first and the fourth of these before but not the others. All excellent recs. comlodge's though ... Damn. Those descriptions were brutal! I can't say brutal in a goo way but brutal in a way that made a good story. And I think "Word Association" is particularly brilliant.

I think this is the first dark list this session so thanks for posting. Good to get all types of fictions each time we open for business.

If that's your idea of "fun" angst, sweetie then HOLY SWEET POTATOES - you're not the Queen of Angst, you're the freakin' Hellgoddess. *grovels* (Damn now I need a gif of Glory's minions.)

I'd already found a goodly number of these and now I've read them all and, loved them! Number 2 & 3 were especially interesting to me because there aren't a lot of fics that explore the really dark implications of Maggie's experiments and take that further like these do, and it's such an interesting, under-explored idea. And yes, WOW to #3. It's completely plausible in-canon (come to that, I'm surprised Maggie didn't want to do experiements on the Slayer) and Tara being all kinds of awesome? MORE PLEASE.

We don't have cookies... we have CAKE!

Either way it's good. I make awesome mexican hot cocoa spiced snickerdoodles (http://mykitchenjourney.blogspot.com/2009/09/mexican-hot-chocolate-snickerdoodles.html). (And Willow's ease-my-guilt cookies are canon!) I sub ww pastry flour and double the cocoa powder for richer flavor.

But I also make this kind of cake (http://bakebakebake.livejournal.com/3579257.html) - rich dark vegan chocolate cake. (Once again I sub ww pastry flour, double the cocoa powder; and I add grated to pureed zucchini or apple, or applesauce for extra moistness.)

So whichever you prefer, I'm ready.

The Initiative could have been utilized to a much darker degree, in my opinion. But thankfully we have fic to rectify that.

I love [livejournal.com profile] leni_ba's take on the Initiative and on Riley in particular in the Courting Sin 'verse as someone much darker and more interesting from the outset than that "aw shucks" naive boy in S4. (And Buffy being so naive about him. *lol*)
