girlpire. And speaking of hilarious, this one made me laugh louder and longer than any fic I read last year. I think just about everyone's read this, but it's worth reading again. And again.

Thicker Than Water by

kellyhk (link goes to Part 1; Part 2 is here). This fic paints a bleak, beautiful portrait of a Russian wasteland and the soul it mirrors. Spike, the unbreakable object, finally breaks. Angel tries to put him back together. Lots of fics have tackled this trope, but few have succeeded so believably.

All the Sky You Need by

wesleysgirl. Begun several years ago, WG finally completed this marvelous fic in 2009. It's a crossover with the Firefly 'verse, with spot-on characterization and voices throughout. Worth reading even if you've never seen Firefly.

Unraveling by

kallysten. A moment in time, unspooled from the end to the beginning. A perfect mix of antagonism and comfort.
