Oh goodness, here I am again. This time, here are five great fics from yesteryear with rare or rare(ish) pairings.

Knocking on Heaven’s Door by estepheia is Spike/Andrew, not a pairing that springs readily to mind. This is a what if when Spike and Andrew are on a mission at the end of S7. There may be tequila involved and Andrew has things he wants to do before he dies.

More goodness this way... )

Some favorite Dawn and Spike shortfic of the past year. Stories arranged from shortest to longest.

Pretty Little Liars by [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight (Dawn & Spike, PG). Post-Gift ficlet. Spike notices one thing, at which Dawn is much better than him. (And it's not applying black nail polish.)

In no particular order...

Title: Happy Xmas (War is over)
Author: Seraphcelene
Rating: Mature
Summary:"Against the tide we struggle with the skin we're in." Dawn, after.
Why I chose it: The characterization of Dawn is so much more than what was explored in cannon. Dawn has never been a character I particularly like, but this made me sympathize with her. It's also BAngel friendly.

Fics that surprised me with some unusual take on the pairing.
Any bad English in summaries is mine and shouldn't be blamed on fic authors.

Good Work Team by [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni (Buffy/Spike, PG-13). What if Out Of My Mind never happened? What if Spike didn’t love (or didn’t realise he loved) Buffy?

Spike can be good or evil and everything in between... and still be in character. Here are 5 wonderful fics by very accomplished writers. I found each of these stories fascinating for a number of reasons, one of them being the authors’ interpretations of Spike and how each one rang true to me.

Please be warned, some of these stories contain upsetting subject matter including issues of nonconsensual and/or underage sex. I will leave it to the authors to provide the exact warnings they feel are appropriate.

Sullen Disposition (Dawn/Wesley)
The skin is unblemished. "Well, you're not shooting up," Wesley says. "At least that's something."

Test Subject
Dawn tries another theory.

A Dangerous New Game (Spike/Dawn)
A Turning changes things.

Shallow Cuts
These shallow cuts, they'll slice away at you until there's nothing left.

Surviving Ophelia
Seldom is there a suicide in Sunnydale.

I wasn't much of a Dawn fan when I watched the show and I don't think I'm alone in that, either. However, that changed when I started reading fanfiction. Dawn's one of those characters that has highly benefited from some serious character exploration by fic writers because we can take her out of the context of simply being Buffy's sister or the catalyst of conflict for Season 5, and really delve into who she is as a person. Each of these fics take one aspect of her and run with it to full affect.

1. The Down Below by Devil Piglet
Spike & Dawn, R, S7 post "Lessons"
Summary: Spike and Dawn have some unfinished business.

Review: Devil Piglet was one of the finest early Buffyverse writers we had and I miss her work dearly. While perhaps best known for her Spuffy, DP also created a number of fics that featured Dawn and I think this is one of her best. The show only gave us a glimpse of the animosity that Dawn felt for Spike after the events of "Seeing Red," but this fics takes those feelings of betrayal, hurt and vengeance to the next logical level. When did Dawn become so scary? I'd say just about the time this fic was first posted. A lovely, dark read with a beautiful conclusion.

I love a good post-apocalyptic scenario. I think partly it's the 'extreme circumstances' part, which allows for all sorts of interesting relationships and alliances, not to mention hurt/comfort. Partly it's the whole survival scenario - I love reading about that kind of thing, even though I, personally, want to sleep in my own bed every night. And partly it's just that sometimes I want some Doom and Gloom with my corn flakes, yanno?

Dawn is a great character *as well as* a great plot device. She's a teenager, hence, pretty inpredictable. She's a Key, so she can have unusual hidden powers. She's a creative person - ergo, she can indulge in unexpected hobbies. She's a Slayer's sister, literally made from Buffy - so she can be self-sacrificing, petty, courageous, bossy, sweet...

Dawn of the Dead by [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy
Ensemble, PG-13. What if Dawn had been vamped in All the Way? First of all, it would be incredible fun. Second, it's a chance to reimagine BtVS and AtS mythology. Thirdly, such plot twist gives us a fresh look at moral dilemmas in Buffyverse. Four: the story is written in drabbles and practically each drabble delves into a situation worthy of a separate fic. Dense, compact and, may I repeat again - uproariously funny!

I think that Dawn is one of the most interesting characters of the Buffyverse if written well. Here are five authors who've managed that feat. Three femmeslash, one het, and one gen.

And the poor girl certainly has had a lot to lose in her young life. These ficlets and shots all revolve around that central, reoccuring theme that Dawn must constantly adapt to and cope with. The stories range in scope from Buffy running away after S2 and her death in S6, to the deaths of Joyce, Tara and Justin. One thing all these works have in common? Some really, really superb Dawn characterization.

1. The Flowers You Gave Me by[info]hands_of_blue
Dawn, Spike, PG, the summers between S2/S3 and S5/S6
Summary: It’s a special kind of day when it rains in Sunnydale.

Review: What I enjoyed so much about this fic is the slow evolution of Dawn's understanding of disappearance and death, first viewed from a child's eyes and then as a teenager. This fic touches on that inalienable truth of how perception changes with time and that patterns and cycles regularly arise. It's also a beautiful, tight piece that brings all the imagery back together by the end, sinching the story up neatly.

As the title helpfully indicates, these are my top five fan fics of all sorts about Dawn by [livejournal.com profile] snowpuppies. And I stress 'in 2008', because she's written really good Dawn ones before this that can't be included here.

Also, these are all by [livejournal.com profile] snowpuppies, which is why I'm not putting the Creator Name.

Plus and also? Minor plot spoilers in the plot descriptions, though I left some stuff out.

And onward to the recs )

Hopefully it will help bring a little attention to one of the least known parts of the Buffyverse.

I'm a huge sucker for Spike and Dawn! I've always thought the two of them brought out things in each other that no one else did; and one of my biggest regrets for season 7 of BtVS is that we never got to see the two of them reconcile. So I'm a sucker for fic than lets me see them interact!

A fic writer isn't just their story--as amazing as some of the stories they produce are. They are also the sum total of how they enjoy their readers and how interesting the discussions are in fb after each chapter. I came up with a some-what quirky list here and its by no means everyone. I also tried not to repeat myself. Hope you enjoy my list.

Once again, I couldn't narrow it down to just five. I'm a selfish greedy girl. I want them all! So for the writers on this list, it's the same situation as my previous list. This post is not to criticize or beg for updates. It’s just a way for me to say to the writers: Take your time. We’re still here. And when you’re ready to write it again, we’re eagerly awaiting with support and adoration. We love your story.

I won't forget you, baby )

There are WIPs and there are those likely to remain unfinshed. Of the latter, there are some just too good to pass up even though they may never be completed. Here's my list of my five favorites (and YES, I recommend you read them and other stories by their authors as the quality is just that good).

Not gonna count this one that is too obvious and also unavailable:

Dancing Lessons by the Redemptionista group (several writers collaberating on this mamouth undertaking. Sadly I can give no link as the site was removed when the website owner (and co-writer) left the fandom.......shed a tear as it was sooooo close to being concluded! If you are new to fandom....ask if anyone has a copy and beg!

All of these writers are top drawer and none of their stories (even the WIPs and unfinished beauties) are to be missed. Publish worthy one and all...you won't be disappointed.
