Fics that surprised me with some unusual take on the pairing.
Any bad English in summaries is mine and shouldn't be blamed on fic authors.

Good Work Team by [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni (Buffy/Spike, PG-13). What if Out Of My Mind never happened? What if Spike didn’t love (or didn’t realise he loved) Buffy?

Topsy Turvey by [livejournal.com profile] xspike4evax (Spike/Willow, NC-17). It starts like a nice Spike/Willow porn, but then goes... *nods at the title*

Harmlyria by [livejournal.com profile] hello_spikey (Spike/Harmony, Spike/Illyria, PG-13). And again, title is pretty much self-explanatory. Spike/Harmony usually isn't a pairing that gets me emotional... but this one did.

The Sun in Your Eyes by [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip (Dawn/Spike, NC-17). Most of Spike/Dawn stories that I've read either emphasize "dirty-bad-wrong" factor as arousing, or completely ignore it and go with the pairing like it's no different from any other het ship. Well... this fic does neither of that.

Four First Dinners (And One Cancellation) by [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy (Buffy/Immortal, PG-13). Can I just say - "that one last Buffy/Immortal drabble!" You'll understand what I mean when you read it.

Great recs!

Most of Spike/Dawn stories that I've read either emphasize "dirty-bad-wrong" factor as arousing, or completely ignore it and go with the pairing like it's no different form any other het ship. Well... this fic does neither of that.
Just curious if you've ever come across anything where this dynamic is reversed? because from this, that's what I was expecting - something where Dawn takes the role of monster instead of Spike? or at least puts them on even footing? (I'm always dying for something like this and haven't really found anything that I didn't write myself)

I'll check that out, thanks! (I typically shy away from pwp and it concerns me that the author pointedly said that their Dawn is "ooc" because she's dark[er] and clever[er])

(or even simply self-confident Dawn)
This isn't limited just to Spike/Dawn - it's all throughout fandom it's highly concerning!

Thanks for humoring me :) I'm always scouting for Dawn fic. it's really hard to find things that are capable of balancing that line between "total ooc badass" and "baby sister goofball" with Dawn and it's frustrating. You're the best!

I never ever toot my own horn, but you would be correct in assuming that I do right by her. (Or at least as well as I am able with my limited skills.) In fact, I just wrote a dawn/spike piece this week that you might find interesting. And know a couple other writers that take a more nuanced approach to their Dawn characterization if you are interested.

Lol okay I'll keep that in mind.

okay well I have a large Dawn fic rec post (http://kwritten.livejournal.com/129788.html) that I made at the beginning of last year.

And then I can't emphasize enough how much clockwork-hart1 (http://clockwork-hart1.livejournal.com/tag/dawn) and lynzie914 (http://lynzie914.livejournal.com/tag/character%3A%20dawn%20summers) have written some of the best character work for Dawnie that I've seen in the past year. They are truly gifts to the Dawn fandom. Which is small.

(also honestly ME, but that feels awfully selfish, and often overlooked because of my penchant for femslash crossover pairings)

I am a very small fish writing about a very small fish in a really big pond. So I'm completely unsurprised tbh.

But you are very, very sweet. Thank you.

OH THANK YOU SO MUCH.

(Seriously my favorite thing I have ever written for Dawn.)

On my phone at work ao I can't hotlink. But the prompter, lynzie, just wrote a really great Dawn piece also if you use the link on my page? It is inspiring and beautiful.

I HAVEN'T AND IT IS REALLY GREAT! THANKS!

(Dawn's a little darker here than my own personal headcanon - but it's just so awesome when authors explore Key-verse aspects. So great!)

ditto. when I still thought that I was doing my MA Thesis on Dawn-fiction, I thought I had read all of snowy's Dawn pieces, but APPARENTLY I MISSED ONE!?

this is why fandom is wonderful.

thanks so much sweety <333
