Some favorite angsty shortfics from the past year.
Any bad English in summaries is mine and shouldn't be blamed on fic authors.

Diner at the end of the apocalypse (Spike, Willow, Wesley, PG) by [livejournal.com profile] lilithbint. A witch, a watcher and a vampire meet in a diner, and - as you already guess - this isn't a funny story...

A light in the dark by [livejournal.com profile] kwritten (Willow/Cordelia/Faith, PG-13). "In that place, Willow presumed that grocery shopping was just the sort of thing that was done by House Elves or something."
Willow at her not-happily-ever-after. You know - those ever-afters when you just stare at the open fridge and cry...

Cling to your body and hang from your bones by dctrs (Angel/Spike, PG-13). "Your name is Angel, you can’t tell if you’re good or bad, and Spike is good now, except when he’s around you, and it’s not okay."
If someone asked me what does "angst" mean, I would just show them this fic.

Empty by [livejournal.com profile] rahirah (Harmony/Wesley, R). "Vampires are supposed to like the freaky stuff, so Harmony doesn't complain."
Even if you are not a fan of Harmony, I'm pretty sure that after reading rahirah's story you'll feel sudden urge to hug her.

Who We Are (the becoming you and me remix) by [livejournal.com profile] snogged (Angel/Buffy, PG-13). What if Angel had introduced himself to Buffy when he first saw her in LA?
Snogged's story keeps perfect balance between dark and adorable, and it's probably a stretch to put it in this list. But just because I know what follows that moment of happiness, and because 15-year old Slayer is even more vulnerable, I can't help to perceive it as angsty.

And I can't post it without mention of Red Frame, White Light by [livejournal.com profile] sparrow2000. The only reason why it's not in the main list is because it was already recced in this comm several times. If you haven't read it yet - do it, it's one of the best fics of the year.

Good to see some of our best writers mentioned. And yes, [livejournal.com profile] sparrow2000's tale is worth mentioning again.

Gosh, thank you. That story had been percolating in my brain for a long time before it wanted to be written, but I was really pleased with the outcome. And if you have the inclination, after you finish you can right on and read the sequel The Beating of the Bounds, which takes up right after Cracks finishes.

Beams at you again
