The Girl Who Courted Death by Off Your Bird - I'm giving you the author's summary 'cause it's just that good: Due to a misfortune of genetics, Buffy is never Called as a Slayer. Instead, she grows up in L.A. with a different set of challenges and trials, unaware of the supernatural world. That is, until a chance encounter with the Slayer of Slayers changes her life—and everything afterward—forever.

The Power of Voodoo by Lucid Screamer - Xander, who dressed as the Goblin King for Halloween, is creating a labyrinth in Sunnydale. WiP that's going in a very interesting direction.

Forging Bonds: What can I say? I'm a sucker for a story that will make me believe an unusual pairing. This is Tara/Faith and it set in a universe where everyone's either a dom, sub, or switch. Tara's the dom.
Bread: uses bread as a metaphor for Willow and Tara's relationship. It's just so heartwarming and beautiful.
The Lamb: Tara works in a hospice helping people cross over when it's their time. Willow, last of the Scoobies, is brought in as a coma patient.
Sapling: Willow, Faith, and three Jewish holidays.
From Beneath You It Devours: Eee, a crossover with the Carmilla web series!

Since we’re running up to Halloween, here are five stories that make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. This is a mixture of pairings and canon characters.

For All My Pains A World of Sighs by

baudown makes my heart ache at the same time as it gives me chills. This is mainly focused on Spike and his kills and is wonderfully written, and the short section at the end with Xander is haunting and beautiful. This has some slash.

I'm unsure of exactly when Buffyverse Top 5 ends, so I'm getting this in before work. Indri has written what may well be my favorite Buffy fanfic of all time In the Morning of the Magicians, Giles and Ethan, the electric Kool-Aid funky Satan groove year, in the early seventies. I decided to share stories from her rec list but a lot of the links were dead so I've been looking up stories; I've started posting a list of her recs here if anyone else is interested. I can't say they're the top 5 because I haven't read all the stories in her list yet.

Herself NYC captured captured Spike's darker side, the vampire's indifference for human life, but also something of the poet who cares for something higher, and I'm thinking of the poet where he tells her to run like hell if she sees him again, in Manhattan Nocturne.

Today my Tumblr feed included Alkeni's meta Amy Madison: A Dark Mirror and a Distant Echo. I'm not always big on meta but I did like this. It inlcuded a link to two of her stories, also about Amy Madison. I followed one of Alkeni's bookmarks and discovered stories by ScienceOfficerWillowRosenberg. So all of these recs come from me browsing off of a meta.

I'm a big fan of fics where a well-timed spell, a friend stepping in to help, or someone asking the right question at the right time can solve a problem from canon.

Here are five short classic fics in that category:

1. Apotheosis by Ephemeral Night (Willow/Tara, General Audiences). Willow stumbles upon the secret for carrying out the Thy Will Be Done Spell in a more effective manner, and comes up with some clever and audacious to eliminate nearly every threat the Scooby Gang will ever face, and then takes it even further into the ultimate fix-it fic territory. Tagged as "fluff and crack" in AO3, and it's high quality fluff and crack.

aliceinkinkland (Buffy/Tara, PG-13). Inspired by Whedon quote, where he admitted considering having the Powers That Be grant Buffy a wish at the end of Chosen to bring Tara back.
As you already guessed from the title, it's not a fluffy story, and a lot of painfully accurate parallels are made.

All In A Day's Work by

beer_good_foamy (Buffy-centric, crossover with the song "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots", PG-13).
To be fair, Buffy wasn't entirely sure how she was supposed to stop a giant robot about to attack Tokyo. But still, being told that someone else would handle it felt a bit weird.
Yes, it's crossover with a song. Yes, it works. Go read it!

The HP 'verse is the commonest one for fics where the author re-writes history by inserting a character (internal or external) who knows what's supposed to happen and is determined to change things but the Buffy 'verse has its examples too...

As the result of a bet that we spend most of the story waiting to find out the nature of, Veronica Mars is in the Buffyverse, knowing what's coming and unable to do anything about it... or can she? Janice's banners are very specific to the individual challenge themes and have a particular theatrical quality to them, a mise en scene suggestive of stage sets. Challenge 22 is moody and atmospheric; 26 and 36's banners are lush, densely layered, evocative of Victorian drawing rooms and vintage photographs gently fading in an attic trunk. I love her fearless use of textures to "degrade" the images in beautiful ways.

Challenge 32's banners are typical of what I think of when I think of Temper's "style" (also typified by her own first place winning icon): warm, soft and inviting glow, muted color palatte. #35's are entirely different; each banner is carefully and precisely coordinanted to the individual icons in terms of colors, and textures so that they seem to be organic extensions of the icons themselves. Manage to be both eye-popping and understated at the same time. The banner for

rua1412's first place winner is particularly stunning.

I am color-matching's bitch. No apologies. Deal with it, kids. The background starry chose resembles a watercolor painting in the rain, soaking the paper. "Pastels" are difficult to pull off without being too-sweet but these hit the spot, matched to their respective icons; while a subtle mix of fonts keeps things interesting without pulling focus..

brutti_ma_buoni's Connected both take on "Chosen", from very different perspectives, and both end up giving me a huge smile while still making some interesting commentary on the show. We critique because we love.

I'd be the world's biggest liar if I claimed I could actually whittle down

foxstarreh's stories last year to "five best" because
there are too many and all of them excellent; this is just a small sampling

"Those Things" - (Buffy/Angel/Spike; Dawn, post-NFA) This is the fic that turned me into a B/A/S shipper. Just lovely.

"On the Edge" - (Buffy, early-mid S6, canon compliant) "Buffy's afraid of drowning. She figures she should be afraid of heights now, too." Character study for a prompt by

leni_ba.

"White Wedding" - (Willow/Tara, AU) One of the most chilling character studies of Willow I've ever read; controlling things (and people) has become all too easy.

"Ash" (Buffy, Angel, Spike; Buffy/Spike, post-Chosen) Spike left her nothing to hold onto after the Hellmouth; Angel offers a way to help. The numbness of grief before the damn of emotion breaks.

"Save the World" (Gen, Tara, Kennedy, AU episodic of Chosen) Exactly what I always imagined Tara's role would have been in Chosen, had she lived. AWESOME. (Why aren't there more AU S7 fics with Tara in them? Get on it, fandom, pretty please.)

Bonus - yes, I'm cheating; but "Survivor's Reunion" (Gen, Buffy, Xander, Spike, Harmony, ensemble; post-Chosen) was one of my favorite comedic fics of the year. The gang meets up for their tenth year class reunion; Harmony is organizing the event. There will be monsters - and awkward conversations with ex-boyfriends.

Dawn Summers: Fighting for an Alternative Feminist Narrative - by

kwritten This link takes you to "part 4" (really 5 parts including the introduction), which in turn has links to all the previous entries in the series. I don't know if this is the very first meta ever written about Dawn, but it's the first one I've come across; which is astonishing when you consider her importance and impact to BtVS. Winner of Best Meta in round 10 of the No Rest for the Wicked Awards, and deservedly so.

Today I am celebrating the remix. The premise of a remix is simple. You take someone else's story (with their permission, of course) and write it differently. Disney films are an oddly great example of the remix concept, but personally, I think these authors do it better. These are five stories that mixed up this year and of course, each one has a link to the original that inspired it. (I'm not going to lie...there's a lot of femslash here.)

1) Same Strokes, Different Folks by

brutti_ma_buoni - This Willow/Sandy tale is a remix of one of my stories, actually. BMB takes the original tale and turns it on it's timeline. She captures both characters extremely well and I promise she delivers a sting that will make your heart hurt a little for both ladies.

Willow is a fascinating and complex character to me, and I really enjoy fiction that reflects that. Here are five classic Willow fics. I'm going to be cautious and label them all not worksafe.

1) The Power and The Other Thing by

mosca.Willow/Tara, Willow/Glory (not really the focus of the story) Gorgeous Wishverse story, with Nerdy Willow, Super-witch Willow, and Scary Willow all wrapped up into one. I really enjoy the way the characters from Angel were worked in. The tone is a bit chilly and remote and matches the world-building wonderfully. This is one of the most hopeful Wishverse stories I've read, but the hope seems earned. This is one of those stories that I think should get a lot more recognition than it has.

1) New York by

drsquidlove: Xander is thirty-seven. Divorced. Two kids. 4000 miles from Sunnydale and his Hellmouth childhood. Also, straight. Only someone forgot to tell Giles. In fact... where the hell is Giles?

drsquidlove is the awesomest writer out there! She manages to hook so many fans up on her fics and she writes Xander/Giles! It's a hard pairing to sell, but she does it so well. I've always been a fan of Xander/Giles, but I've never been a huge fan of it until I read

drsquidlove's fics. She knows how to make an impossible pairing believable.

Also, what makes

drsquidlove a great writer is how her fics aren't just about the main pairing, but expand to their relationships with other characters which creates a very complex character driven story.

Sleeper by booster17: Xander Harris never thought he’d end up in a place like this, and certainly not with Faith. When the past comes crashing back into his life, what future will he have left?

Mr. Spike by lilithbint: Spike has a place he goes to do something nobody would expect of him. It started when he had the chip. He doesn’t know why he’s still goes because it hurts sometimes, but Mr Spike is the one who does good because it’s good and not for any other reason.

The Lamb by Tara the Phoenix: Tara is a hospice nurse in Los Osos, California about to get a new patient: Willow Rosenberg, the sole survivor of the Sunnydale implosion.

Of Old Mystics by Wolfling and Magpie: After the fall of Sunnydale, Rupert rescues Ethan from the Initiative only to find they have a destiny of their own.

Amnesia!Spike: The title rather says it all...
