My Top 5 plotted bunnies. Five stories that rely on plot, theme and characterization.

Title: Soul Searching
Sequel To: Family: Blood Calls to Blood
Author: [livejournal.com profile] hesadevil
Rating: PG
Status: WIP
Why I chose this: Because this series is an action epic. It goes AU after 'Destiny' but reads like something written for canon. The writing is excellent, the characterizations spot-on, and it's edge of your seat all the way. No pairing but you'll be too breathless to notice. The plot is the main character. This is a story.

Title: Canis Familiar
Sequel To: Re-Entry
Author: [livejournal.com profile] sockmonkeyhere
Rating: R
Status: Complete (and another sequel is in the works. Squeee!)
Why I chose this: Another series, taking place post-NFA. The pairing is Spike/Fred but that isn't the main focus. Oz and his nephew steal the scene in this compelling sequel. The clear, crisp writing and solid characterization make for gripping storytelling.

Title: Savage Beauty
Status: WIP
Author: [livejournal.com profile] speakr2customrs
Rating: PG13
Status: WIP
Why I chose this: Because it's hilarious. It's the only All Human I've ever enjoyed and it is totally audacious. The summary? Buffy is the Prime Minister of Iceland. Spike is a Jivaro head-hunter in the Amazon rain-forest. Believe it or not - it works!

Title: Four Friends
Sequel To: These are actually the latest in a series of many stories so I am just providing a link that takes you to all of them.
Author: [livejournal.com profile] ozma914
Rating: PG
Status: Complete, but new short stories are added frequently.
Why I chose this: This is actually a series of short stories in a longer series all taking place Post-Chosen. The stories are ensemble pieces wth no pairing (and unfortunately, almost no Spike). The four friends are ghostly Tara, Dana, Buffybot, and an original character, Kara, who is a new slayer. The overall series deals with the adventures of the remaining Scoobies as they search out new slayers and rebuild a new Watcher's Council. The writing is lean, with a wry twist of humor. You can read these all in a chunk for a satisfying meal, or snack on one at a time.

Title: Finding The Way Home
Author: [livejournal.com profile] sandy_s
Rating: PG13
Status: WIP
Why I chose this:This is a post-Chosen Spuffy that ignores Angel S5. The story involves alternate universes and alternates Spikes, and Angels. How could you not love a story that has extra Spikes and Angels? The story is plot driven and the writing cosy and comfortable.

How wonderful you had a thing about "why you chose this" that's great. I love Sandy's story and also adore Canis Familiar. I read both it and Re entry as WIPs and lived for every new story post. :)

What a brilliant idea for a list! Honestly, I'm so impressed with people's categories. This is wonderful, and applauds all those writers who spend months maybe years on a fic. And I sometimes wish I could marry Soul Searching, I love it so much! :) And the other four I'm not so familiar with - plenty of holiday reading there *g*
Pssst! The link to #3 takes you to another fic...and, er, once you get the link right it might need a rating too? Thank you!!

Ohh, thanks for these recs. I love plot fics. I stumbled across Blood Calls To Blood when it was still a WIP and saved it to read later - didn't notice it's completed already. The others sound good, too.

You recced both of them. That was very sneaky clever of you.

I know 4 out of the 5. Four Friends is the only one I haven't come across before, probably due to the lack of Spike.

Spike

You might try my "Robin Lays an Egg" on my fanfiction.net site for just a bit of Spikey goodness. That gives away a plot twist, but what the heck ...
I consider it one of my better stories, but it doesn't get read a lot because Robin's not exactly the most popular character in the JossVerse. (Which is why I wrote it!)

I loved Canis Familiar and, yay, there's going to be a sequel! But I've not heard of the other four. So thanks for pointing me toward plotty goodness.

Ah plotty fic. I do enjoy finding longer more involved stories -- though I also wish I could find more time to spend reading them. So nice to have this though for when that time does pop up.

Actually, I prefer Spike to Angel as a character. Angel can be a bit dull ... even as a good guy, Spike has an edge that makes him more fun to write.

My problem remains that personal psychotic thing I have, in which all my stories *must* fit into my JossVerse universes continuity. In other words, since I haven't dealt with the events of Angel's last episode, my characters are stuck in a holding pattern -- hovering in time during the events of the last season. That means Angel and Spike are both occupied in L.A. at the moment, and so can be used only sparingly in my stories.

Crazy, ain't it?

So my next major project is dealing with "Not Fade Away", so I can make use of the characters from Angel ... those who survive. ;-)

I agree, I'd rather not disappoint a reader who's looking for something I don't have, so a warning's appropriate.

The post "Not Fade Away" story, which I'm thinking of titling "Fade Away -- Not" (kidding!), is on the board as my next major writing project. There might be a few "Four Friends" shorts along the way, though, just to keep the fans happy. :-)
