Here are five short fics I really enjoyed in 2011. It's by no means an exhaustive list - for a start, I could say go and read everything by [livejournal.com profile] bruttimabuoni and [livejournal.com profile] readerjane on [livejournal.com profile] sb_fag_ends - but I've tried to make it as diverse as possible.

A First Time For Everything, by [livejournal.com profile] hello_spikey, Spike/Riley, NC17. This is a follow up to a Spike/Riley fic [livejournal.com profile] hello_spikey wrote a while back, called Riley Large and In Charge, which I loved. Lucky me, I got to challenge her to write a sequel.

I've spent a lot of time this year reccing this story, and now I'm going to rec it again.

In the Morning of the Magicians by [livejournal.com profile] indri, Giles/Ethan, R. [livejournal.com profile] indri is one of the all time greats of the fandom, and this novel length fic shows you why. Set in London in the early 70s, it tells in brilliantly imagined detail of Ripper's first meeting with Ethan Rayne and of their catastrophic raising of Eyghon. The sense of place and period is just wonderful.

The little gals often have big stories, sadly hidden from the viewer. Fortunately, we have many talented writers who can spotlight them beautifully. Here are a few of the many standouts from 2011:

Lydia, Sunday, Buffybot, Harmony, Vi, Newbie and Future Slayers on Parade! )

These are a few of my favorite guaranteed to make me giggle things, in no order :
[livejournal.com profile] shapinglight's Wedding from Hellverse series - just consider making Drusilla a bridesmaid...

[livejournal.com profile] the_visitor's Mrs.Cuddlesworth the Vampire Slayer - thought all the chosen were young things did you?

[livejournal.com profile] james_translate's Spike's story for dummies - need I say more...

[livejournal.com profile] awmp's Cuddling : a Spike/Buffy cartoon - the illustrations alone are worth the visit.

and lastly, my all time favorite :

[livejournal.com profile] st_salieri's Art Project aka Cordelia and Wes make a chart of Angel's love life - no liquids near keyboard please.

[livejournal.com profile] deird1 is one of my favorite Buffyverse writers. She's very prolific, and I can't choose only 5 fics - so I make three separate lists. Here's the first one.
No Words
http://deird1.livejournal.com/256747.html
PG. Season 7 through the eyes of Chao-Ahn. Brilliant continuation of ideas of non-verbal communication, started in Hush.

Halfway There by [livejournal.com profile] indri - PG-13 – Wonderfully spare account of Giles' journeys to rescue the Potentials in S7. She gives these many near nameless and faceless girls (and the ones who didn't make it) some real meaning, and makes Giles' life's work resonant.

The Monsters Are Due in Washington Square by [livejournal.com profile] liz_marcs
PG-13. Post-series. 22,000 words. Xander faces a new apocalypse. Told from a OC's POV, this gripping horror story reads like original fiction in the grand traditions of Stephen King.

If You Can Reach Me by SpuffyProductions (Buffy/Angel, Buffy/Spike) - And, boy, I'm not even a Spuffy fan. It's just that great...

Gift by Bisclaveret (gen, ensemble) - Because... is there a more perfect song for the buffyverse? I don't think so.

Howl by Shoopdancer (Angel/Darla) - Ah, Florence and the Machine! Another perfect, powerful song choice.

The Fiddle and the Drum by Gwendolyn's flight (gen, Wesley-centric) - Ah, Wesley... So moving and perfect...

Fragments by E^y (gen, Wesley and Illyria centric) - A perfect gem. 00:22 always stoles my breath away.

More Than Words (Buffy/Chao-Ahn, R)

This fic, set post-Chosen, gives Chao-Ahn a voice and shows her POV when a patrol with Buffy gets unexpected sexy.

Ancient (Buffy/Kaylee, R, crossover with Firefly)

Featuring an immortal Buffy, the world weary slayer is written perfectly and her relationship with Kaylee is touching.

Open Season (Buffy/Fred, PG)

Fred and Buffy meet in the wish!verse in a darkly sweet snippet of another life near Ohio's hellmouth.

Ten Candles (Buffy/Tara, PG-13)

A sympathetic exploration of Buffy and Tara's relationship in ten different moments.

Staying Around (Buffy/Kendra, PG)

Kendra stays in Sunnydale after Whats my Line in this splendid AU from her POV.

These are just a few of many, but we must start somewhere. Also, please note that these selections may contain things other than high hilarity, such as "awww" moments, or even a trembly lip here and there.

Wedding From Hellverse by [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight  (PG13)
(Buffy/Spike, Ensemble) Good lord! *choke* The Something Blue spell never entirely broke, and the wedding is going forward, complete with bridal showers and bachelor parties —and with Drusilla a bridesmaid and Angel a groomsman. I dare you to get through the story of the actual wedding day (Killer Brides From Hell) without at least 3 LOLs.

Mrs. Cuddlesworth the Vampire Slayer by [livejournal.com profile] the_visitor  (PG)
(Gen) In 1886, a new Slayer is called, but for once it’s not a young, malleable girl.

Traditional Love Stories by [livejournal.com profile] tashlae  (PG)
(Buffy/Spike) This is not a love story. There's too much attempted murder for that. It begins thus: Into every generation there is born a Slayer. Yadda yadda yadda.

There Goes The Cavalry by [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy  (PG13)
(Spike/Andrew, sort of) Spike is inappropriately grateful for Andrew’s help during the NFA alley fight. Oops!?

Spuffy vs. Mecha Godzilla by [livejournal.com profile] quinara  (G with innuendo)
(Buffy/Spike implied) There’s trouble in downtown Sunnydale, and Xander knows just who can save the day!

Little Blue Bottles (Kendra)
I would go back home, but I am not welcome there.

Doin' It (Nikki Reed)
What Nikki learned from being the Slayer.

Knowledge (Kennedy)
Kennedy is painfully aware.

Bloodlines (Original)
Remember all those Potential girls? Well, not all of them were prepubescent athletes.

Naming the Demons (Original)
A nation bowed under oppression, where the footsteps of demons cross the streets both night and day.

Buffyverse is the perfect playground for unusual ideas - and ficwriters who play in Joss' sandbox are very inventive.

Fair Dinkum by [livejournal.com profile] deird1

PG. Somewhere in the beginning of season 5, Buffy reads a book “Slayers of the Early 20th Century; A Study” and discovers interesting facts about slaying in Australia.

Sorry. It's a bit of a naff description, but I'm not in the right headspace to categorise properly.

These are five fics I really enjoyed in 2009. They don't have anything in common and one of them (tragically) is a WIP. I have another post's worth of recs for another day, which is similarly lacking in an overall theme.
