[livejournal.com profile] deird1, Just the Four of Us: complicated, ambitious, waaay outside the author's comfort zone (or so she writes, anyway), and she pulls it off beautifully.

[livejournal.com profile] lily_lovely, Very Secret Diary of Andrew Wells (O Captain My Captain Remix). Angstiest angst in the world: it has fun, laughter, sweetness, and then it hits you like a thousand hammers. Mainly OCs, we know them so briefly, but by the end, we are dying for them.

[livejournal.com profile] antennapedia, Echoes in the Air: the Pistolwhip Remix. Yeah, I'm biased, this one was written for me. But it's a thing of beauty, early Ripper roughness and fear, a real feel for London, and a sinister yet believable Council too.

[livejournal.com profile] aadler, Family Skeletons, a cavalcade of all the dirty washing of the Buffyverse spilling out in a single baaaad day.

[livejournal.com profile] deird1, Waiting Game; not technically a remix, but a timestamp fic based on the author's original. Still, it shares a lot with the remix genre, not least timeslippage and interweaving the text of the original with the new work. Beautifully painful too, and a fitting tribute to the lost.

Ooh, remixes, great list topic!

Looks like there's no link to #3 though.

Also, #2 goes to your rec of the fic rather than the author's page.

Hm, I respectfully disagree. [livejournal.com profile] deird1 took a straighforward and simple story and gave it more breadth and life imo. The fact that she did this in reverse, taking the OC character back in time both in style and vocabulary and diction, all while keeping Cordelia as the guide. Well, I think it's special when you're in love with a story. I think it's even more special when you're in love with a story and in awe of the way the writer wrote that story.

Please forgive my ignorance. What's a "remix"?

Do these people get permission before doing this or at least give credit to the author and fic upon which they are basing their work? I know I would want someone to ask and credit me before doing something like this with one of my fics.

I don't know. Your description of this practice just rubs me the wrong way. We all credit the shows for which we write, but those people are professional writers who are already getting paid oodles. We write these for free but work just as hard on them, so it would just really suck for someone basically to write fanfic based on our fanfic without asking permission first, especially if no credit is given.

I might also add that I know of at least one person who took her alternate universe fics from public to private, finished them privately, and turned them into professional novels. Basing fanfic on them could've really been a bad scene for the person(s) who did.

I just ran across this, based on someone else’s having found the story by following your link. Thank you. I’m glad it pleased.
