Strictly speaking, only four of these are actually set in S4, but the other one is also full of S4 flavor, and all feature the delightful unlikeliness of early-season Spuffy.
1. Achilles Heel, by Elizabeth
A demon curses Spike and Buffy to UST, basically. Eventually, desperate, they decide to resolve that dratted ST! One of the true classics of Spuffydom from before we had more than the barest hint of it in canon.
2. Closure, by
eowyn_315
After Buffy is drugged and raped at a Lowell House party, she unexpectedly ends up leaning on Spike for moral support as she goes hunting for the rapist. This is treacherous thematic ground, but Eowyn is careful and deliberate in her storytelling choices, and Buffy's search for the truth is a compelling and sympathetic one. Plus, there's the Spike/Buffy!
3. Take Heart, by Dutchbuffy2305
The events of Primeval went a bit differently, and now Buffy needs Spike's help. This is plotty and quite dark, with body horror and character death aplenty. But it's also a believable and fun (yes, really!) genesis to a Spike/Buffy relationship, and another classic piece of fanfiction.
4. Cycle of Rebirths, by WeyrWolfen
To borrow from the blurb, When Buffy and Spike’s lives become entwined with the fates of a slayer and a samurai who lived and died three hundred years ago, everything they think they know about their relationship and themselves is called into question. Plotty and intriguing in its mythology, this is almost as interesting for the secondary, OC pairing as it is for the Spuffy.
5. Perfect World, by cousinjean
After the events of "Grave," Spike comes back to Sunnydale just in time to make an unfortunate wish that catapults him in a nightmarish world in which Adam got his armageddon. Angsty to the max and full of the post-apocalyptic dynamic, this also addresses the events in "Seeing Red" in a very affecting way.
