These post-NFA drabble-ish-length vignettes from Spike's first week as a Shanshu-d human are absolutely beautiful- realistic, romantic, and with an ending that still makes me go adflkajdlfkjaldk.
"First she reminds him that just because it can’t kill him anymore, the sun can still hurt like hell and maybe it’s not such a good idea to fall asleep shirtless on the balcony. Then she peppers every inch of burned skin with kisses and whispers that the sun lit up his hair like a halo."

Vampire plague is about to, er, plague Sunnydale, and the Scoobies are on the case -- as are the Korean Slayer of 1933 and her gumshoe sidekick Sid. Excellent character voices, but what I love most about this fic are Sid and Cho, whom I'd happily read whole fics about. Barbara Stanwyck glamour and the Slayer burden, plus Sid "cracking wise": what's not to like?

If You Can Reach Me by SpuffyProductions (Buffy/Angel, Buffy/Spike) - And, boy, I'm not even a Spuffy fan. It's just that great...

Gift by Bisclaveret (gen, ensemble) - Because... is there a more perfect song for the buffyverse? I don't think so.

Howl by Shoopdancer (Angel/Darla) - Ah, Florence and the Machine! Another perfect, powerful song choice.

The Fiddle and the Drum by Gwendolyn's flight (gen, Wesley-centric) - Ah, Wesley... So moving and perfect...

Fragments by E^y (gen, Wesley and Illyria centric) - A perfect gem. 00:22 always stoles my breath away.

I was going to do this last year, but time ran away from me. But since I think it's a rather good idea, I'll try this year instead. I'm going to stretch the rules a little, but hope that the mods will forgive me!

My idea is very simple: I'll rec LJers who've not posted for at least a year, and (to try to keep within the rules) point to one work of theirs each. Sadly, my list hasn't changed from last year. Although originally my list was going to include

AU S7
A huge, sprawling, plotty, ensemble-cast S7 AU. The Spuffy reunion and rebuilding is slow and cautious and occasionally fraught, but beautiful. The Buffy-Dawn relationship is wonderful, too. There's fun plot stuff and serious plot stuff. Even the actual pregnancy developments are handled gracefully and with aplomb.

The First Slayer was always a point of fascination for me on the series because of her established link to the past. The show gave us so little information about the girls that came before Buffy or even what slayers were by nature until the Primtive's introduction in "Restless." Each of these fics offer different interpretations of who she might have been, how she was created, and what role her creator(s) had in her existance.

1. Hiywan's Story by

Summary: "I have no speech. No name. I live in the action of death. The blood-cry, the penetrating wound. I am destruction. Absolute. Alone."
Hiywan's Story gives the First Slayer back her voice, and allows us to hear her story in her own words for the first time.

Review: What's so incredible about this fic is stormwreath's dedication to its internal continuity. This carefully researched story set during the Stone Age is a lesson in how compelling world building and OCs can be in skilled hands. Hiywan's struggle to find her place in society, navigate it's rigid social structure, and make difficult moral choices beautifully fleshes out a character that was treated as more of a symbol on the show than a living, breathing woman with struggles and obstacles.
