It's always fun to come across a story that pushes you out your comfort zone as far as ships are concerned. Here are five rare(ish) pairings - I say 'ish' because one isn't really, but it's so awesome I had to include it! *g*

In Nairobi in the Rain by inlovewithnight, Xander meets a strangely familiar girl in a Nairobi bar and realises it is Fred, who died a few weeks before. There’s just something about the atmosphere of this fic that haunts me - it’s just lovely.

This way to more lovely stuff... )

I became inspired by [livejournal.com profile] red_satin_doll's classic recs wishlist. Among other things, she asked for rare pairs, Mr. Gordo, stories that explore the POV of voiceless victims, and overlooked characters. Some of these stories do double, or even triple duty!

1. Little Red Riding Hood, by Circe -- This is a rare pair, and an overlooked character, and it's from the POV of a voiceless victim. And it's fantastic. Spike/Janice

2. Stars and Crosses, by Emelye -- This is definitely a rare pair; it fits in another wished for category as well, but I'm not saying more -- there's a surprise, and it made me grin from ear to ear when I first read it.

3. Untitled ficlet, by Anna S -- This one explains itself: Spike/Lorne (the ficlet is in the second half of the linked post)

4. The Wall Series, be Debechan,Teland, and TheSpike -- Xander/Ethan -- this qualifies as a rare pair, right? Dark and dirty.

5. Domestic Bliss, by nomelon -- Spike/Riley, which I think qualifies as a rare pair, too. This is a must-read, even if you think this pairing is a non-starter for you (as it was for me, until I read it, and then WOW). It's original and captivating and emotional and hot. Trust me on this one.

Here are five short fics I really enjoyed in 2011. It's by no means an exhaustive list - for a start, I could say go and read everything by [livejournal.com profile] bruttimabuoni and [livejournal.com profile] readerjane on [livejournal.com profile] sb_fag_ends - but I've tried to make it as diverse as possible.

A First Time For Everything, by [livejournal.com profile] hello_spikey, Spike/Riley, NC17. This is a follow up to a Spike/Riley fic [livejournal.com profile] hello_spikey wrote a while back, called Riley Large and In Charge, which I loved. Lucky me, I got to challenge her to write a sequel.

I've spent a lot of time this year reccing this story, and now I'm going to rec it again.

In the Morning of the Magicians by [livejournal.com profile] indri, Giles/Ethan, R. [livejournal.com profile] indri is one of the all time greats of the fandom, and this novel length fic shows you why. Set in London in the early 70s, it tells in brilliantly imagined detail of Ripper's first meeting with Ethan Rayne and of their catastrophic raising of Eyghon. The sense of place and period is just wonderful.

A second rather disorganised post, but these stories all need reccing to the comm, and in fact some possibly have been recced before and I missed it.

Sorry. It's a bit of a naff description, but I'm not in the right headspace to categorise properly.

These are five fics I really enjoyed in 2009. They don't have anything in common and one of them (tragically) is a WIP. I have another post's worth of recs for another day, which is similarly lacking in an overall theme.

Some authors are long gone from the Buffyverse fandom, but thanks to LJ memories and the Wayback Machine, we can still enjoy their wonderful work.

I would hope that most people reading this will have heard of Anna S, or [livejournal.com profile] eliade, but if not, here are links to some of the hidden gems in her LJ memories, picked more or less at random, because they are all just so good you could choose any of them. They're all m/m slash and don't always have proper titles, and the ratings are mine, not [livejournal.com profile] eliade's.

I love a good, plotty fic. I'm also partial to a well-written piece of erotica. If it has some semblance of plot, great, but of course it doesn't have to. Not really the point.

Erotica, of course, is very much in the eye of the beholder (as it were), and these five fics won't appeal to everyone, but they're all well-written, (and hot IMO). Having said which, please heed ratings/warnings etc posted here, as well as on the fics themselves.

Empty Rooms, Shuttered and Dank, by [livejournal.com profile] nomelon, Angel/Spike/Riley, Hard R/NC17. The author makes this rather unlikely threesome all too believable, with her trademark gritty prose. I swear you can almost smell the sweat.

Here are five fics that, when I read them, made me say to myself, "That is just amazing!" I hope you enjoy them.

I think this story has been recced already, but never mind. It can't be recced too often IMO.

Of All the Wonders I Have Yet Lived, Angel/Darla R by [livejournal.com profile] girlpire. A heartbreaking look at what might have happened if a human Darla hadn't died after all when Connor was born.

It's always a bit nerve-wracking reccing WIPs. It's always a bit nerve-wracking reading them, for that matter. If it's something we like, we so want it to be finished and it's not always posssible. People move on or RL circumstances get in the way. However, here are five WIPs I've really enjoyed reading in 2007. I hope they will be finished, but even if they aren't, I'm still very glad to have read them.

I am not sure if these have been recommended before but I am certain that these stories need to be mentioned as the top slash for 2005. In no particular order since each story is fantastic in its own right.

All these fics made me think outside the square, sit up and pay attention and/or get lost in a very, very well-written fic. And hopefully I'm also fulfilling some of the requests from the wishlist.

So I was feeling lame because I hadn't thought of anything yet and then this idea hit my fancy. I'm a pretty dedicated Spike/Buffy shipper but just to prove that I can embrace variety with the best of them I present:

My Top Five Non-Spuffy Pairing Fics

These are mostly recent as I lost all of my bookmarks in a horrifying hard drive crash on Thanksgiving Day.

Here they Be )

Note: There would be more tags on this entry (namely: spike/xander, faith/buffy, spike/faith, and spike/other) but for some reason it won't let me use any tags that haven't already been used.
