My Five Favourite Giles/Xander Fics

buffyversetop5Here’s my five favourite Giles/Xander fics by authors who consistently impress me with their grasp of Xander’s character (they write him with humour!), plus they totally get that Giles isn’t just some stuffy old guy!

savoytruffle - You Can Be a Winner at The Game of Life, Mature. Early early Season 4. Giles is in trouble, Xander is weak, Giles is silly, Xander is smart. This is a funny story with an undercurrent of seriousness (and backstory) that just propels you along. savoytruffle is the master of narrative flow and it shows in this fic, plus her Xander and Giles voices are top notch. This is the kind of story that reminds me how very talented a writer she is.
2.drsquidlove - Hands Down (This links to part 2, which has the link to part 1), NC-17. After Giles' hands are injured in an accident, he is dismayed to find himself entrusted to the care of one Xander Harris. He is further dismayed to realise Xander is not irritating him at all. This is a delightfully sexy G/X fic with a bonus of some extremely awesome Scooby dialogue. drsquidlove is a writer who really gets both Xander and Giles, and does a fantastic job especially portraying a confident Xander who also displays some vulnerability.
3.reremouse - Uncle Quiggy Saved The World, Mature. Pints, comfort sex, ignored ultimatums, mentions of canon character death, casual sex, uncasual sex, hot chocolate, cake, time travel and a secret. An inventive and cool plot, awesome characterizations and that wonderful reremouse flow and humour, which makes for a fantastic story. Xander is mature, confident and sexy, and the fic perfectly captures Giles and how he changes throughout the show’s canon.
4.mireille719 - Utah and Everything After, Teen. The first night out of Sunnydale, Xander got something he thought he'd wanted. It didn't go the way he planned. Features Epic Misunderstandings (and a Cat). This is story that effortlessly blends humour in with the angst to provide the type of awesome and always enjoyable Giles/Xander stories that mireille719 continues to impress me with. She has a perfect grasp of both voices and what makes the characters tick.
5.drsquidlove - Easy, PG. It's an English Christmas for the ex-Sunnydale crew, but Rupert and Xander aren't feeling the Christmas cheer. This is such a lovely, bittersweet story. I love how subtle the angst is, we're not drowning in it, it's this undercurrent of sadness throughout the story. Also, the writing for all the characters is lovely.
