Oddly, though Spike/Drusilla is an important 'canon' pairing, it's very difficult to write. There's something illusory about the pairing - hard to get a handle on - probably because we saw so little of their 100 year relationship on screen but only its end. This hasn't stopped some wonderful fic writers from filling in the blanks for us over the years, though. Here are five of the best from 2008.

Boats Against the Tide by [livejournal.com profile] bookishwench, Spike/Dru PG13, set on Dover Beach and as melancholy and lyrical as Matthew Arnold's poem of that name, with a delicious twist at the end.

It's a sad fact that our heroes weren't given the most healthy and life-affirming sexual relationships. Happiness was often short lived with their partners, if not outright self-destructive. This year there were a number of metas and discussions on the Scoobies, but more specifically Buffy's, bad lot when it came to matters of carnal love. I've listed them in the order I think it makes most sense to read them, if one were to take this as an immense treatise on differing viewpoints about sex in the Buffyverse.

1. More Scoobies and Their Sextoys (Meta) by [livejournal.com profile] stormwreath
Although his polling experiment started as a humorous exploration of what the Scoobies might be up to with themselves between the sheets, this meta also speaks to the characters basic personality traits and how their temperaments might influence their sex lives. There's also some talk of the Kinsey scale that grounds this speculative and humorous meta in the real world. For those interested in fluid sexuality and the Kinsey scale, I'd also direct you to [livejournal.com profile] gabrielleabelle 's interesting meta on Willow's Gay Now!

I didn't come all this way to get knocked up by some demon dust )

I read a wide range of fic and pairings, and I enjoy teh angst and meaningful meditations on our beloved characters as much as the next gal. If I'm honest with myself, though, what delights me the most is laughing at those same characters when I find them in unexpected situations. (And if they fall down, literally or metaphorically, so much the better. I'm cruel that way.) With this self-awareness firmly in mind, I looked back over the year to the creative offerings that not only left me with a big smile on my face but that I return to when I need a little pick-me-up. Here they are, in order of discovery:
--

1. The Caseus Prize by [livejournal.com profile] philips
Diabolically hilarious Spuffy ficlet, R for "sexual wackiness." A tale of cheese voodoo gone wrong that makes Spike do things that would mortify even an (un)dead man. Combine a Big Bad who's fallen into a vat of curds n' bad!fic and the long-suffering Slayer who struggles to save his bacon while fending off his confused advances, and you have a recipe for some grade-A dairy-based comedy.

Remix Redux is one of those ficathons that not only gets me writing, but gets me reading outside of my low hanging fruit/familiar authors standard mod. The following are my five favorite Jossverse fics from [livejournal.com profile] remixredux08 that I read (as I didn't manage to read all that were a part of the ficathon), but didn't beta:

Title:
She's Getting Married (The It's Not to Us Remix)

Author: [livejournal.com profile] secondalto
Rating: PG
Fandom/Characters: Angel the Series/ Angel, Spike, Buffy
Why I chose this: Fabulous funny expansion of [livejournal.com profile] mommanerd's original drabble. By the time I reached the "Are we there yet?" I thought I was going to lose it.

Here be four more. )

1- The Scottish comic by [personal profile] stormwreath: Think of a famous character from literature who lived in a castle in Scotland and had help from a witch or two; who started out as a noble and brave hero but was seduced into committing a crime in order to become more powerful, and from then on spiralled further and further down until they lost all respect for human life and ended up as nothing but a cruel tyrant fated for death.

There were a number of requests on the comm's wishlist post for fics that made us laugh, so here are a few of my picks. In truth, I don't search out funny fics. I'd rather cry than smile when it comes to my reading habits, but these five stood out to me for their subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) incorporation of humor. Included are 5 different pairings (something for everyone!), 3 of which use interesting formats.

1. The Little Death by [livejournal.com profile] erimthar
Buffy/Satsu, NC-17, Season 8
Amy has been causing trouble for Buffy and her Slayers, but not in a way any of them could predict. When a collective orgasm shakes the castle, the Slayers have to get to the bottom of their mystical manipulation. (Compliant with the “Time of Your Life” story arc in the Buffy comics)

Review: Collective orgasms, huh? That should be this fics selling point right there! And although it is humorous, erimthar (a new BtVS writer), doesn't skimp on her characterization or plot. I'm not a femmeslash fan and I don't follow Season 8, but I was still pulled into this story, a dirty leer on my face all the way through. In addition to Buffy and Satsu, erimthar juggles a large ensemble cast with skill and style while tackeling the dirtier and pervier sides of magic with class.

The Jossverse is a dark place. Two of these vids look at disturbing themes the stories themselves bring up – incest, violence, incestuous violence. Two are more meta and one is almost (but not quite) literally dark.

Or, at least they knocked my socks off, and I thought I'd share them. It's a difficult thing to make that 100x100 space seem roomy and expressive, but I think these artists know their shape and form to a t.  It was totally hard to choose just a few when there are so many talented artists out there making Jossverse icons, but here you go:

1) cordelia

This isn't a perfectly coherent group, but I think they all have something in common: taking a strong format/theme/gimmick and running with it successfully. Each one made me think 'I would never have done that - but I wish I could!' (Several are not rated, but nothing seriously over PG-13).

In no particular order:

Pentimento: 52 moments that never happened to Dawn (and one that probably will) by [livejournal.com profile] nwhepcat- an amazing run of drabbles inserting Dawn into seasons 1-4. Funny, sad and insanely clever - the best kind of fic.

Romance is all very well. But sometimes, you just want to grab the first object you can find...

some rather silly pairings )

More icons! I couldn't resist. So here are some more with some of the reasons why I love them so much.

1) spike/buffy icon
by [livejournal.com profile] jasoncourtney
found here at [livejournal.com profile] chocolatejewels

I've seen this scene more than once - it is, in a word, iconic - but the way jasoncourtney pulls the light around them makes the energy and the love in this particular moment just sizzle

something unusual about the others too )
