1. Them Downtown Boys Sure Talk Gritty by [livejournal.com profile] musesfool - Adult – I have to say it never occurred to me how perfectly Kaylee and Dean Winchester suit one another, but I think it would be clear to anyone after reading this fic. The only downside is that it makes me long for more stories where the Winchesters continue their adventures in the Fireflyverse.

The Buffyverse fandom is getting on a bit now, but in spite of that it still attracts new writers and still inspires them to try new and different ideas - not just plotwise but structure/formatwise too. Here are five fics from 2008 told in innovative ways that I particularly enjoyed.

Dial N for Nancy-Boy by [livejournal.com profile] deird1 Spike and Angel, rating G. This hilarious and touching story by one of our best new writers reports a series of phone calls between Spike and Angel over a period of four years, from season 1 of AtS on, told in 28 drabbles. Wonderful stuff.

What if things went a different way? What if it happened to a different person? What if everything went wrong? Or what if everything went right?

My first post here, hope I did it right.

I'm fairly new to the Buffyverse fandom, and only discovered the fandom slash about three months ago. WooBoy, there is so much amazingly well written stuff, I couldn't begin to pick five favorites. So, I decided to just give you the five slash WIPs, I'm avidly following into 2009. [Please note, I'm really bad at summaries!]

The slash fic I'll be following in 2009 ... )

For me, picspams are a guilty pleasure. They present really great, interactive ways to have fun and engage with our fandom that takes us out of the realm of writing. The first entry on my list is easily the most hilarious thing I viewed all year:

1. International Phallic!Spike Day by [livejournal.com profile] mere_ubu
If you're at all familiar with Mere's "work" (see doll!fic - a hoot and a half), she's got a certain kink for torturing her Spike and BtVS dolls. And by torture, that usually involves hilariously sexually explicit and compromising positions complete with disgrunteled word balloons by her unhappy dollies. This particular post features Spike toting phallic objects of many kinds. Don't forget to read the comments. Many people decided to celebrate with their own photos!

this way to angstville, discreet Spuffy and Halloween fun )

It tells a story, using words and all, so it's fic, right? But the visual is so much a part of the story that it isn't really prose (or poetry). So, what do we call it? My first impulse was to call it F-Art, but that doesn't do justice to the skilled practitioners of the form. So, until I hear otherwise: Art!Fic. Everything on this list features Spike, 'cos that's just how it played out.

BIG NUMBAH ONE: The Attack of the Cookie Monsters by [livejournal.com profile] rahirah, PG, for cookie violence. This charming domestic adventure story is told (brilliantly) in the style of a children's picture book. I betcha can't read it just once!

It's no secret that the BtVS fandom is blessed with a huge array of talented artists. Manippers and banner/icon makers are the people who make us look good. But seeing artwork that goes beyond manipping and screencaps is usually pretty rare. Luckily, 2008 heralded the entrance of a few individuals and/or their work into our playpen that stretched the boundaries.

Artwork: James Portrait Right Back Atcha, Baby
In my two years, I believe Tibi is the first artist I noticed that actually drew and sketched with pencil and paper. And not only does she draw, but she does so with immense skill. Her flexibility and scope is huge. Always experimenting with her style, she changes it up drastically from picture to picture (abstract, photo realistic, comic style, sketches, b&w, color), which makes viewing her work fresh and exciting. She is also fearless and often uses unexpected angles and POVs for her more dynamic scenes, employing them to dramatic and sensual effect depending on the mood of her piece. Her art catalog is diverse, ecclectic, and varied.
