5 Fics That Made Me Giggle
Jan. 4th, 2009 04:46 pmThere were a number of requests on the comm's wishlist post for fics that made us laugh, so here are a few of my picks. In truth, I don't search out funny fics. I'd rather cry than smile when it comes to my reading habits, but these five stood out to me for their subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) incorporation of humor. Included are 5 different pairings (something for everyone!), 3 of which use interesting formats.
1. The Little Death by
erimthar
Buffy/Satsu, NC-17, Season 8
Amy has been causing trouble for Buffy and her Slayers, but not in a way any of them could predict. When a collective orgasm shakes the castle, the Slayers have to get to the bottom of their mystical manipulation. (Compliant with the “Time of Your Life” story arc in the Buffy comics)
Review: Collective orgasms, huh? That should be this fics selling point right there! And although it is humorous, erimthar (a new BtVS writer), doesn't skimp on her characterization or plot. I'm not a femmeslash fan and I don't follow Season 8, but I was still pulled into this story, a dirty leer on my face all the way through. In addition to Buffy and Satsu, erimthar juggles a large ensemble cast with skill and style while tackeling the dirtier and pervier sides of magic with class.
2. Reading Between the Lines: Why Disagreement Occurs by
ash_carpenter
Spike/Angel, PG-13, AtS Season 5
Fred conducts a study to analyze the misinterpretation of words between Spike and Angel. There had to be more to all that bickering than met the eye, right?
Review: It's always really cool when authors manage to find a new way to tell a story and Ash does do here through a report written by Fred. Her study of Spike and Angel's spats is nothing short of adorable, told predominantly through dialogue, Fred's filter, with hypotheses and conclusions to boot. Not only will you chortle at this, but it's also a pretty solid character study, too.
3. Vampires and the Women Who Love Them: Parts I & II by
st_salieri
Buffy/Twilight/Tru-Blood Crossover, G
In the spirit of lulz, salieri wrote an interview transcript in talk show format between Buffy, Bella and Sookie exploring the ridiculousness of each of their vampie relationships. The second interview we get Spike, Edward and Bill's perspectives. I found Part II particularly hilarious because of Spike's attitude and "outing" of Edward. Having not read any of the Twilight books (but reading many many parodies and seeing the movie) and never having seen Tru-Blood, I still loved this and found it hysterical.
4. Towels by
deird1
Spike, Xander, PG, BtVS Season 7
A ficlet response to
still_grrr's "wrath" challenge using the definition of "anger leading to revenge."
Review: Using an inventive storytelling format, dierd shows the devolution of Spike and Xander's civility toward each other during their roommate period through a series of passive aggressive notes. Their jabs and insults are funny and get more and more extreme as the fic goes on. Best of all are their reactions to various pranks that happen off screen.
5. Problem Solved by
shapinglight
Spike/Buffy, ensemble, R, BtVS Season 5
Buffy's up to her last nerve with Spike and, on a suggestion of Giles, gives him a public shaming he won't soon forget.
Review: It's all about Anya. Seriously. What's great about this fic, aside from Spike's spanking, are the hilarious reactions that the Scoobies have to watching this whole scene play out in the Magic Box. Anya acts as the veritable MC to the festivities and guides a reluctant Buffy through the motions with ridiculous confidence and eager relish.
Although
mere_ubu beat me to it, I will also second her rec of
philip's The Caseus Prize. Lampooning every bad smut convention known to man sinches it for me!

Date: 2009-01-04 11:18 pm (UTC)It's funny. A lot of these links (on this list and others) I did not have bookmarked. It turns out my memory is pretty good when it comes to details and author names. My only concern is not to repeat other posters! It looks like a lot of us read the same authors or comms. I'm holding out for names that are not familiar to me. *fingers crossed*

Date: 2009-01-05 01:39 pm (UTC)I'm afraid all your harlots-in-arms outted you, my dear. Also, limping Spike and Angel and Lindsey holding their bums and licking their wounds were circulating some scandolous rumors about "abuse." I think you might need to reign them in!

Date: 2009-01-05 01:49 pm (UTC)Well, I was entertained!
The Towels story was terrific, like all deird1's work, but I haven't read the others.
Excellent. I'm really pleased to see how much of the work I've linked has been new to people. I mean, that is the point, right? Exposure to fics that you may have missed or wouldn't necessarily be the first ones you sought out.

Date: 2009-01-07 02:08 pm (UTC)That's both a blessing and frustration about these posts. Wittling the lists down and, conversely, having to alter them and make substitutions when someone beats you to the chase! I'm going to have to alter a rare pairing post since two were already mentioned *phooey*.
The other two are new to me. Yay for fresh funny!
Hee! Enjoy. I hope to make two posts this evening. I've been out the last two nights. Falling behind on my recs.
